Sweden Permanent Residency Documents Checklist: What to Gather Before You Apply
The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) will request additional documents (komplettering) from most PUT applicants. The question is whether you are asked to supply them after submission — which delays your case by weeks — or whether you included them in your initial application. Preparing a complete file before you submit is the fastest path through the system.
This checklist covers the documents you need to gather, where to obtain each one, and what Migrationsverket is actually looking for when they review them.
Category 1: Employment History Documents
Payslips (Lönespecifikationer)
You need all monthly payslips for the 12 months immediately before your application, plus payslips covering any period where your salary was close to the work permit threshold. Your employer's payroll system should provide these. If you have changed employers during the four-year period, you need payslips from every employer.
Migrationsverket checks that every single monthly payment equaled or exceeded the salary stated in your permit application and the applicable threshold at the time.
KU-Utdrag (Tax Statements)
A KU-utdrag is an annual income statement that your employer submits to Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency) and which records your total gross pay and tax withheld for each calendar year. It is the tax authority's version of your employment record.
How to get it: Log in to Mina Sidor on Skatteverket's website (skatteverket.se) and download the KU-utdrag (control statements) for each year of your work permit period. You need one per employer per year. If you worked for multiple employers in one year, you will have multiple KU-utdrag for that year.
Migrationsverket uses these documents to cross-reference your payslips against what your employer reported to the tax authority. Discrepancies between the two — even small ones — will trigger a request for explanation.
Employment Certificate (Anställningsintyg)
A formal letter from your current employer confirming:
- Your current position and job title
- The salary level (gross monthly amount)
- The type of contract (permanent/fixed-term) and, if fixed-term, the contract end date
- That the role falls within the scope of your current work permit
This document is critical for the 18-month future employment test: Migrationsverket must be satisfied that your employment is expected to continue for at least 18 months from the date of their decision. If your contract is fixed-term, ensure the end date is far enough away. If your contract expires within 18 months, obtain a written extension or renewal before submitting.
Work Permit History
Print your work permit history from the Migrationsverket e-service. This shows every permit granted, its validity dates, and associated employer. Migrationsverket already has this data, but including it demonstrates that you have accounted for your full residency period and identified any potential gaps.
Category 2: Income and Tax Documents
Skatteverket Income Statement (Inkomstuppgifter)
This is a summary of your annual income and taxes paid for all years of your permit period. Download it from Skatteverket's Mina Sidor. It is separate from the KU-utdrag — the income statement shows what you yourself reported in your annual tax declaration, while the KU-utdrag shows what your employer reported.
For PUT, Migrationsverket uses the Skatteverket income data to calculate your average net income and assess whether it meets the maintenance requirement (försörjningskrav) based on the Kronofogden normalbelopp system.
Three Most Recent Payslips
In addition to the full historical record, include your three most recent payslips to demonstrate current income. These should match the employment certificate.
Category 3: Housing Documents
The PUT maintenance calculation requires your net income to cover both the Kronofogden normalbelopp for your household and your actual housing costs. You must document your housing costs.

If you share housing costs with a partner or spouse, include their income as well — combined household income can be used for the maintenance calculation.

Category 4: Insurance Records
This is where most applications face scrutiny. The four mandatory employer insurances must have been continuously active throughout your four-year permit period:
- Occupational pension (tjänstepension) — Collectum or AFA Försäkring
- Occupational injury insurance (TFA) — AFA Försäkring or private insurer
- Life insurance (TGL) — AFA Försäkring or sector-specific provider
- Health/sick pay insurance (AGS or equivalent) — AFA Försäkring or private insurer
How to get insurance certificates: Contact your HR department and ask for a Försäkringsintyg or coverage confirmation letter for each insurance type. The letter should list the start date of coverage, any gaps, and the name of the insuring entity. For blue-collar workers, most insurances run through FORA (collectum.se/fora.se). For white-collar workers, they typically run through Collectum and AMF.
Request certificates from each employer separately if you have worked for more than one company during your permit period.
Category 5: Identity Documents
- Valid passport (all pages, including blank pages at the back)
- Current residence permit card (front and back)
- If you have changed passport during your stay, the old passport as well
Category 6: Family-Related Documents (if applicable)
If your family members will be included in the application or you need to account for household maintenance:
- Marriage certificate or cohabitation documentation
- Birth certificates for children
- Proof of relationship duration (lease agreements, joint bank statements, utility bills)
- For each family member: their residence permit history and employment/income documents if they are working
Note: from June 6, 2026, children must have separate applications submitted on their behalf. They cannot be bundled into your PUT application.
Submission and Biometrics
PUT applications are filed online through Migrationsverket's e-service. The application fee is SEK 2,000, payable by card at the time of submission.
After submitting online, you must book a biometrics appointment at a Migrationsverket service center to provide fingerprints and a digital photograph. This appointment should be booked as soon as possible after submission — delays in biometrics can slow the overall processing time.
If Migrationsverket requests additional information (komplettering) after submission, respond within the timeframe they specify — typically 14 to 21 days. Missing this window can result in a decision being made on the incomplete file.
When to Submit
Apply no later than when you have 44 months of clean work permit history. Do not wait until your current permit expires. Applications should ideally be submitted with three to six months of validity remaining on your current permit, so your right to work is protected throughout processing.
