Irish Citizenship Application Status, Form 8, and the Online Portal Explained

After five or more years of building a life in Ireland, the naturalisation application is the final administrative mountain. For many applicants, the confusion starts before a single document is uploaded: Which form do you actually need? Where do you apply? And once you submit, how do you know anything is happening?

This post cuts through the confusion on Form 8, the ISD Online Portal, document requirements, and how the status tracking actually works.

Form 8: What It Is and How to Get It

Form 8 is the official application form for Irish citizenship by naturalisation under Section 15 of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956. It is the form used by the vast majority of adult applicants — those applying on the basis of standard five-year reckonable residence.

There is no paper Form 8 anymore. The Department of Justice moved naturalisation applications fully online in 2022. The "Form 8" now refers to the online application completed through the ISD Online Portal at irishimmigration.ie. There is no separate PDF to download and post.

However, the ISD does publish supporting document guides as downloadable PDFs, including the adult documents checklist and the residency scorecard. These can be found at irishimmigration.ie under "Become an Irish citizen by naturalisation." For children's applications, a separate Form 8A exists and is still available as a PDF download for certain scenarios, but adult applications are exclusively online.

The ISD Online Portal: Step by Step

The online portal is the single point of entry for all adult naturalisation applications. Here is how the process flows:

Step 1 — Create an account. You need a valid email address and a current Irish immigration permission. The portal is at irishimmigration.ie, and you register with the same account used for other ISD transactions (IRP registration renewals, etc.).

Step 2 — Complete the application. The online Form 8 collects:

  • Personal details and passport information
  • Your full immigration history in Ireland (all stamps and permission dates)
  • All addresses over the nine-year window
  • Employment and income information
  • Travel history (all absences from Ireland in the nine years before the application)
  • Declaration of good character

The address history section is where many applicants underestimate the work involved. In Dublin's rental market, an applicant might have lived in 8–12 different properties over nine years. The portal requires each address with exact dates. Prepare this information before starting the form.

Step 3 — Upload documents. All supporting documents must be uploaded as high-quality scans or photographs. Blurry images or partially cut-off documents are a common reason for follow-up queries.

Step 4 — Pay the €175 application fee. Payment is made by credit or debit card within the portal. The fee is non-refundable regardless of the outcome.

Step 5 — Submit and await the eVetting email. Within days of submission, you will receive an email from the Garda National Vetting Bureau with a link to complete your electronic vetting. Complete this immediately — delayed eVetting completion is a common cause of processing slowdowns.

Irish Citizenship Documents Required

The documentation requirement is built around the 150-point residency scorecard, which must be satisfied for every individual year of residence claimed. The core documents fall into two categories:

Identity documents:

  • Certified full-colour copy of the biometric page of your current passport
  • Certified copy of your original civil birth certificate (with certified English translation if in another language)
  • Copies of all IRP cards (front and back) held throughout the residence period

You need 150 points per year. The most efficient combination for an employed person is a P60 (70 points) plus a rent agreement (50 points) plus a utility bill (10 points) plus medical insurance (10 points) — 140 points. Add a doctor record (25 points) or bank statement (50 points) to exceed 150.

Critical detail on bank statements: Bank statements only score the full 50 points if they show a minimum of three Point of Sale (POS) transactions per month within Ireland. Statements that are primarily showing online transfers or foreign transactions may score lower or be queried.

Employment evidence:

  • A letter from your current employer on headed paper stating your start date and current position
  • Payslips for the last 6 months

Statutory declaration: The final section of the application requires a statutory declaration, which must be witnessed and signed by one of: a Notary Public, a Commissioner for Oaths, a Peace Commissioner, or a solicitor. This person must verify your identity against your passport. A solicitor will charge approximately €30–€80 for this service.

How to Track Your Irish Citizenship Application

Once submitted, the ISD Online Portal confirms your application and payment but does not show real-time queue position or case progress. There is no live status tracker in the way that USCIS or IRCC portals provide case status updates.

What you will receive:

  • Email confirmation of submission and payment
  • Email with Garda eVetting link (arrive within a few days — complete immediately)
  • Letter or email if documents are queried (within the initial screening period, usually within 2–4 months)
  • Approval letter requesting €950 certification fee (when your application is approved)
  • Ceremony invitation (separate correspondence after approval)

If you have received no communication at all after 14 months, it is appropriate to send a status enquiry email to [email protected]. Include your full name, date of birth, nationality, and application reference number from your portal account.

Do not phone the Citizenship Division repeatedly before the 14-month mark. The volume of enquiries is high and individual phone calls do not change processing order.

What Happens If Documents Are Queried

The initial screening typically occurs within the first 4–8 weeks. If the Department identifies a missing or inadequate document, you receive a notice with a 28-day window to supply the correct material. This is not a refusal — it is a request for information.

Common queries include:

  • Uncertified photocopies of the passport or birth certificate (must be certified by a solicitor or Commissioner for Oaths)
  • IRP card copies that are blurry or incomplete
  • Bank statements that do not show sufficient POS transactions
  • Gaps between IRP card renewal dates that need explanation

Respond to any document query before the deadline with the exact document requested, certified where required.


The administrative side of a naturalisation application is not legally complex — but it is detail-intensive. The difference between a clean submission and a queried one is almost always preparation: having the right documents in the right format before you open the portal.
