PTE Score Validity Period and Test Day Tips

A PTE Academic score you cannot use because it expired before your application was lodged is a score that cost you $185 to $260 for nothing. Understanding the validity period and timing your test correctly is as important as achieving the score itself.

How Long Is PTE Academic Valid?

PTE Academic scores are valid for two years from the test date for most immigration and academic purposes. This applies to Australian skilled migration visas, New Zealand immigration, UK visa applications (PTE Academic UKVI), and most university admission processes globally.

Two years sounds like a long time, but the clock starts the day you sit the test — not the day you receive your score report. If you sit in January 2025, your score expires in January 2027. If your visa application is lodged in February 2027, the score is no longer valid.

Timing your test strategically:

  • If you are in the EOI pool for Australian skilled migration and expecting an invitation within 12 to 18 months, sit the test no more than 6 months before you expect to lodge your visa application. This leaves you 18+ months of validity as buffer.
  • If you are targeting Express Entry with PTE Core for Canada PR, note that your IRCC profile requires a valid language test result at the time of application. If your score expires while you are waiting for an invitation, you will need to resit.
  • If you are applying to a university and your course starts in 18 months, confirm the institution's specific validity requirements — some universities require the score to remain valid through the program start date, not just the application date.

Exceptions to the two-year rule:

  • Some professional registration bodies (including AHPRA) may have shorter or longer validity windows depending on the specific profession and registration type. Confirm directly with the relevant body.
  • Some immigration pathways have specific validity requirements that differ from the standard two years. Always verify against your specific visa subclass or immigration program requirements.

Test Fees and Rescheduling

PTE Academic test fees vary by country and test center. The 2026 fee range is approximately $185 to $260 USD globally. In Australia, the fee is approximately $475 AUD. In India, it is approximately ₹18,000 INR including GST.

If you need to reschedule, note the following:

  • Rescheduling more than 14 days before the test: typically free or a small administrative fee
  • Rescheduling 2 to 13 days before: partial fee penalty (varies by region)
  • Rescheduling less than 48 hours before: typically full fee forfeiture
  • No-show on test day: full fee forfeiture

Book your test date when you are confident your preparation is within 5 to 10 points of your target on a full practice test. Booking prematurely and sitting when unprepared wastes the test fee and resets your progress by the time needed to prepare for a retake.

What to Expect on Test Day

Arrive early. Test centers expect candidates at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start time. Arriving late can result in being turned away and forfeiting the test fee. Allow extra time for traffic, security queues at the test center building, and the pre-test administration process.

Bring your original ID. The ID you use when booking must be the same ID you bring to the test center. Passports are the most reliable form of ID — they are universally accepted. National ID cards and driving licences are accepted in some regions but not all. Check your specific test center's requirements when booking.

What happens at check-in:

  1. Your photo is taken by the test center
  2. You undergo a palm vein scan (this creates a biometric record used to verify your identity at any future PTE test)
  3. You sign a digital confidentiality agreement
  4. Your ID is verified against the booking record
  5. You are assigned to a computer workstation

What you can bring in: Your original ID only. Everything else — mobile phones, watches (analogue and smart), wallets, bags, water, food — goes into a locker outside the testing room. You will not have access to these items during the test.

What is provided: An erasable noteboard (a laminated sheet and a marker pen), noise-cancelling headphones, and a standard QWERTY keyboard and mouse. Familiarize yourself with the headphone type — the audio quality matters for Listening tasks. If the headphones are uncomfortable or the audio seems unclear, notify the proctor before the test begins, not mid-test.

Key Test Day Logistics

The "Next" button is final. Once you click "Next" on any question, you cannot return to it. This is different from paper-based tests where you can skip a question and return later. If you are uncertain about an answer, take your best guess and move forward — spending excessive time on one question risks leaving later questions unanswered.

Section timing is automatic. The test software enforces the time limits for each task and section. You will see a countdown timer. When time expires, the current task closes and the next begins. There is no section break where you can stop and rest — the test runs continuously.

Speaking tasks are recorded. The room is not silent — other candidates are speaking at their workstations. You will hear background voices during your speaking tasks. This is expected and your microphone is calibrated for it. Do not let other candidates' voices break your concentration or rhythm.

Write from Dictation is near the end. The Listening section appears last, and Write from Dictation — the task with the highest per-item score contribution in the Listening section — appears at the end of the Listening section. This is when you are most likely to be mentally fatigued. Candidates who manage their concentration well across the full two hours perform significantly better on Write from Dictation than those who are mentally depleted by the time it arrives.

After the Test: Results and Score Sharing

PTE Academic results are available within 48 hours of the test. Occasionally this is faster — some candidates receive results within a few hours. You will receive an email notification when your score is ready to view in your Pearson account.

Score sharing is free and unlimited. You can send your PTE score to as many institutions, government agencies, or visa authorities as you need at no additional cost. This is done through the Pearson online portal — you generate a share and the receiving organization gets a direct digital link to your score. Government immigration portals (Australia's SkillSelect, IRCC's portal) use a Score Report Code or TRF number that you enter directly into your application.

The PTE Academic Preparation Guide includes a complete country-by-country score requirement reference, a test day preparation checklist, and the full cross-scoring strategy framework for all task types. If you are within a few months of your test date, the guide's four-week intensive study plan will help you structure your remaining preparation time efficiently.
