PTE Test in South Africa: How to Score Superior English for Your Australia Visa

South African professionals occupy a strange position in Australia's English testing landscape. Most are native speakers — English is either their first language or a primary language of education and work — yet they still must sit a formal language test to claim points in the skilled migration system. More importantly, they must target a specific score to maximize those points.

Scoring "Competent" English gives you zero migration points. Scoring "Proficient" gives you 10 points. Scoring "Superior" English — the highest band — gives you 20 points. For most South African applicants competing at or near the cutoff for an invitation, those 10 extra points from Superior vs. Proficient are the difference between waiting years and receiving an invitation this program year.

The Two Test Options That Matter for South Africans

The Australian Department of Home Affairs accepts several English tests, but two dominate the choice for South African applicants:

IELTS Academic / General Training — the British Council-administered test, widely available and globally recognized. Paper-based and computer-delivered versions exist.

PTE Academic — a computer-delivered test developed by Pearson, sat at dedicated test centres.

The other accepted tests (TOEFL iBT, OET for healthcare) are less commonly chosen by South Africans for skilled migration purposes.

PTE Academic is available at dedicated Language Testing Centre locations in South Africa:

• Johannesburg (Rosebank): The primary Johannesburg option, located near Sandton
• Johannesburg (Edenvale): Additional capacity near the east rand
• Cape Town: Available for Western Cape applicants

Durban applicants currently need to travel to Johannesburg or Cape Town — there is no Durban PTE centre as of 2026.

Cost: Approximately R4,300 per sitting in South Africa (compared to approximately R6,200 for IELTS). The PTE cost differential can matter for applicants who may need more than one attempt to reach the Superior threshold.

Results turnaround: PTE Academic results are typically available within 48 hours of sitting the test. IELTS results take between 5 and 13 days depending on the format. For applicants working toward an EOI submission or inside a 60-day post-invitation window, the PTE's speed advantage is real.

What "Superior English" Requires

To claim 20 points for Superior English, you must achieve a minimum score of 79 in each of the four PTE components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. A single band below 79 — even 78 in one section — drops you to Proficient (65 per band) or lower.

The IELTS equivalent threshold for Superior English is 8.0 in each band (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).

Why Many South Africans Find PTE Easier to Reach 79

The scoring mechanism of PTE Academic is automated — a computer algorithm scores every response. This creates predictable scoring patterns that experienced test-takers learn to work with.

Several factors make PTE more accessible for the Superior band:

No human examiner variability. IELTS Speaking is scored by a human examiner, and while training is standardized, examiner variation exists. PTE Speaking is machine-scored, meaning accent variations (South African accents are sometimes penalized on IELTS) do not affect the outcome.

Integrated skills scoring. Many PTE questions contribute to multiple skill scores simultaneously. A strong response to an integrated Reading and Writing task can boost scores in both sections — helping applicants who are strong readers but less confident writers.

Predictable question formats. PTE has a fixed question type inventory. Targeted preparation — specifically practicing "Summarize Written Text," "Write Essay," and "Retell Lecture" — yields predictable score improvements.

Why Preparation Matters Even for Fluent Speakers

South African professionals regularly sit their first PTE attempt without preparation, assuming native fluency is sufficient. Many score in the 72–78 range — frustratingly close to the 79 threshold, but technically Proficient rather than Superior.

The most common failure points for native English speakers:

Timing in the Speaking section. PTE Speaking requires you to begin speaking within three seconds of the prompt finishing. Pausing to think causes the recording to interpret silence as the end of your response.

Word count in essay writing. The PTE essay task specifies a minimum word count (200–300 words). Writing significantly fewer words is heavily penalized, regardless of the quality of what is written.

Oral fluency and pronunciation scoring. The machine scores oral fluency on rhythm and rate, not accent. Speaking too slowly or with excessive hesitation — even for a fluent speaker — reduces the fluency score.

One dedicated preparation session with PTE-specific practice materials is typically sufficient for a fluent English speaker to understand these patterns and adjust.

IELTS in South Africa: The Alternative

If you prefer IELTS, test centres are available through the British Council in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban — more geographically distributed than PTE.

Cost: approximately R6,200 per attempt. Computer-delivered IELTS results arrive within 3–5 days; paper-based results take up to 13 days.

The 8.0 band requirement across all four components is the IELTS equivalent of PTE 79. Many South Africans find the Writing component the most difficult to hit at 8.0 — IELTS Writing Task 2 (essay) is scored on task achievement, coherence, vocabulary, and grammar, and human examiner judgment applies.

The practical recommendation: If you have not taken an English test before and want the fastest path to Superior English, start with PTE preparation materials. If you are already IELTS-prepared or prefer a human-delivered speaking component, IELTS is an equally valid choice — just budget for potentially more than one attempt.

One Attempt Is Not Always Enough

Budget for two test sittings. The 10-point cost of falling short of Superior — sitting at Proficient — can extend your invitation timeline by a year or more, particularly in competitive occupation categories. A second PTE attempt at R4,300 is the cheapest points purchase available in the entire skilled migration process.

Once you have a valid test result, your score is accepted for three years from the test date. You do not need to resit unless your certificate expires before visa grant.
