This is not an abstract goal — PTE 79+ (Superior English) is achievable, and Bangladeshi professionals are increasingly choosing PTE over IELTS to get there.

The English Score Thresholds That Matter

The Australian points test uses three English levels:

"Competent" is the minimum for most visa subclasses but awards zero points — it is a threshold you cross, not a points earner. The real competition is between Proficient (10 points) and Superior (20 points).

For a typical Bangladeshi IT professional aged 27–32 with a 4-year degree, the points breakdown might be: Age 30 + Education 15 + Work Experience 5–10 + Partner 0–10. That base of 50–65 points means English is the most controllable lever for reaching competitive territory (80–90+).

The 10 extra points from moving from Proficient to Superior English can be the difference between receiving a state nomination and waiting in the queue indefinitely.

Why PTE Works Better for Many Bangladeshi Applicants

IELTS has been the traditional English test in Bangladesh for decades, but PTE Academic has gained significant ground since 2020. The structural reasons Bangladeshi professionals tend to perform better on PTE:

Computer-based scoring removes examiner subjectivity. IELTS Speaking and Writing are marked by human examiners. Bangladeshi candidates often score 6.5–7.0 on Speaking despite good fluency because examiners evaluate accent, intonation, and natural phrasing against a native English model. PTE Speaking is scored by AI, which evaluates pronunciation and oral fluency algorithmically — a different set of criteria that many non-native speakers find more consistently scorable.

PTE Writing tasks are more structured. The "Summarize Written Text" and "Write Essay" tasks in PTE have clearer templates. Daily test availability. IELTS runs weekly in Dhaka. PTE runs daily at Pearson-authorized centers in Dhaka. If you need to retake the test on short notice — for example, after a near-miss on one communicative skill — PTE allows faster iteration.

Faster results. PTE results are usually available within 48 hours. IELTS results take 3 to 13 days depending on the format. For time-sensitive EOI updates, PTE's turnaround matters.

PTE Test Costs in Dhaka

PTE Academic is available at Pearson-authorized centers in Dhaka. Current costs (2025–2026):

• PTE Academic: BDT 25,000–28,000 (approximately USD 235–260)
• IELTS Academic (British Council / IDP): BDT 28,450 (approximately USD 265)

The costs are comparable. PTE does not have a meaningful cost advantage, but the strategic and scheduling flexibility is the reason most Bangladesh-to-Australia applicants are switching.

For comparison, IELTS test centers operate in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, and Rajshahi. PTE is currently concentrated in Dhaka.

What PTE 79 Requires

PTE Academic scores each communicative skill separately: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. To achieve Superior English for Australian migration, you need 79 or above in every communicative skill — not just the overall score.

This is where applicants trip up: an overall PTE score of 82 does not qualify if Speaking is 76 and Writing is 80. Every individual skill must meet or exceed 79.

The hardest skills for Bangladeshi applicants:

Speaking: Oral fluency and pronunciation are the sub-scores within Speaking. Pronunciation is scored on how closely your speech patterns match expected English phoneme patterns. Bangladeshi English has distinctive phoneme patterns (particularly with /v/ vs /b/, and vowel lengths) that can suppress pronunciation scores. Practicing with feedback on these specific patterns — not general English conversation practice — is what moves this score.

Writing: The "Write Essay" task is scored on content, form, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. The most common error pattern for Bangladeshi candidates is grammatically correct sentences that are logically repetitive — restating the same point with slightly different vocabulary rather than developing an argument.

The Reading and Listening advantage: Most Bangladeshi professionals with strong English backgrounds score 79+ on Reading and Listening relatively easily. These are the skills to nail first to create a buffer.

Score Validity and Migration Timing

PTE Academic scores are valid for three years from the test date. For Australian migration purposes, the score must be valid at the time you receive your visa invitation and at the time of visa lodgement.

Do not take PTE too early in your preparation process. If you take PTE 30 months before you realistically expect to receive a visa invitation, you may need to retest. The right timing is roughly 12 to 18 months before your expected invitation date — close enough to be valid, far enough to use the score for the EOI without rushing.

IELTS vs PTE: Which to Choose from Bangladesh

There is no universal answer, but a practical decision framework:

Choose PTE if:

• You scored 6.5–7.0 on IELTS Speaking multiple times and cannot break through to 7.5+
• You prefer structured preparation with predictable task types
• You want faster results and more frequent test dates
• You are aiming for PTE 79 rather than IELTS 8.0 (the bar is objectively lower — PTE 79 vs IELTS 8.0, both qualify as Superior)

Consider IELTS if:

• You already have a strong IELTS result (7.5+ on all bands) and are close to 8.0
• You have access to high-quality IELTS preparation materials and coaching in your city
• Your target visa requires IELTS specifically (some healthcare visas and state nominations specify IELTS or OET)

Note: For Australian skilled visas (189, 190, 491), both IELTS and PTE are accepted interchangeably. Neither has an advantage in the assessment itself.

The NAATI CCL Bonus

The NAATI Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test in Bengali offers an additional 5 points on top of your English score. This test assesses your ability to translate between English and Bengali at a community interpreter level — it is not a language proficiency test but a translation accuracy test.
