IELTS vs PTE for Australia PR: What Indonesian Applicants Actually Score Higher On

The English proficiency test is where most Indonesian PR applications are won or lost. Moving from "Competent" to "Superior" scores is worth 20 points — more than any other single factor in the Australian points test except age. The question is whether you should spend those 3.5 million rupiah on IELTS or PTE.

The answer depends on what kind of English errors you make.

The Points at Stake

Before comparing tests, understand exactly what the thresholds mean for your PR application:

You need all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) at the required level. A 7.5 in three skills with a 6.5 in Writing gives you 0 points for English — not 10.

For competitive skilled occupations, you need at minimum 10 points (Proficient) and ideally 20 points (Superior) to receive an invitation. In 2024–2025 invitation rounds, software engineers and accountants regularly needed 85–95 total points. Without Superior English, reaching those scores requires extraordinary age, experience, and state nomination points stacked together.

Why Indonesian Applicants Lean Toward PTE

Survey data from the Indonesian migration community consistently shows that PTE Academic has overtaken IELTS as the preferred test. The practical reasons:

AI-based scoring removes examiner bias. IELTS Speaking is assessed by a human examiner. For Indonesian speakers, whose accent includes a retroflex "r" and difficulty with English "th" sounds absent in Bahasa Indonesia, the variability of a human examiner introduces risk. PTE's AI scoring engine evaluates pronunciation through acoustic models, which many Indonesian test-takers find more consistent and predictable.

The score is granular and specific. IELTS moves in 0.5-band increments. PTE moves in 1-point increments on a 10–90 scale. If your PTE score is 74 and you need 79 for Superior, you can see exactly how far you are from the threshold and which sub-skills to improve. IELTS at 7.5 gives you less signal.

Results arrive faster. PTE results typically arrive within 48 hours. IELTS results take 1 to 13 days depending on whether you take computer or paper-based. When you are timing your results around SkillSelect invitation rounds, this matters.

Test centres. IELTS centres operate in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, Bali, and Yogyakarta, at approximately IDR 3,490,000 per sitting. PTE centres are primarily in Jakarta and Surabaya, at IDR 3,500,000 or above. If you live outside Java, IELTS has a clear geographical advantage.

When IELTS Makes More Sense

PTE is not always the right choice.

If your Speaking is strong but your Writing is weak — a common profile among Indonesian IT professionals who communicate well verbally but struggle with formal written English — IELTS has a specific mechanism that PTE does not: the One Skill Retake (OSR).

The IELTS One Skill Retake, now accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for most skilled visa subclasses, allows you to retake a single component (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) rather than the entire test. If you achieved 8.0 in three skills but 7.0 in Writing, you pay approximately IDR 1.5 million to retake only Writing — rather than IDR 3.5 million for a full sitting.

For Indonesian professionals who are 90% of the way to Superior English, this is often the most cost-effective path. The OSR result is combined with your original scores to produce a new combined result.

Important: The OSR can only be used once per test booking, and the retake must be in the same test type (Academic or General Training). The retake result cannot be combined with a different test sitting.

Healthcare professionals — particularly nurses applying via ANMAC and AHPRA — should note that the Occupational English Test (OET) is the preferred (and sometimes required) language test for those pathways. OET is offered in Jakarta at approximately IDR 6,000,000 and is specifically designed around healthcare communication contexts. If you are an Indonesian nurse, IELTS and PTE are secondary options; check whether OET is required by your specific assessing authority first.

Bahasa Indonesia to English: The Structural Challenges

Understanding where Indonesian speakers lose points helps you target your preparation.

Grammar and tense. Bahasa Indonesia does not conjugate verbs for tense or use gendered pronouns. Indonesian speakers frequently omit past-tense markers, use incorrect subject-verb agreement, and mix up "he/she" in English writing. These errors affect IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 scoring under "Grammatical Range and Accuracy."

Writing Task 2 / PTE Write Essay. This is typically the lowest-scoring component for Indonesian applicants. The academic essay register required differs significantly from the informal professional communication style common in Indonesian corporate environments. Targeted preparation on essay structure and hedging language ("it could be argued," "evidence suggests") pays off disproportionately here.

PTE Speaking. The "Describe Image" and "Retell Lecture" tasks in PTE Speaking can favour Indonesian applicants because they are structured (reducing the cognitive load of generating spontaneous speech) and AI-scored (removing examiner accent bias). Practice with timed recordings helps.

The Practical Decision Framework

Choose PTE if:

• You are self-studying with online resources and want predictable, measurable progress
• Your Reading and Listening are stronger than your Speaking
• You are in Jakarta or Surabaya where test centres are available
• Speed of results matters (lodging EOI close to an invitation round)

Choose IELTS if:

• You are outside Java or Sumatra's major cities
• You already have strong Speaking scores and only need to improve one skill (OSR strategy)
• Your occupation requires IELTS specifically (check your assessing authority's requirements)
• You previously took IELTS and are close to the threshold — consistency in test format may help

Either test result is valid for 3 years from the date of the exam. Some assessing authorities (including ACS for IT professionals) require the English test result at the time of assessment, not at the time of visa lodgement. Check whether your skills assessment body has a specific requirement before booking.
