IELTS vs PTE for Australian Immigration: Which Test Should Pakistanis Choose?

Both the IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are recognized by the Department of Home Affairs for Australian skilled migration. Both measure the same four components: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The difference is in how each test is scored, what those scores feel like to Pakistani test-takers in practice, and how the two tests map to the 10-point vs 20-point thresholds in the Australian points test.

The short answer for most Pakistani professionals targeting the maximum 20 "Superior English" points: PTE Academic is the stronger strategic choice.

What the Points Test Requires

The Australian points test awards:

• 10 points for "Proficient" English: IELTS 7.0+ in all bands, or PTE 65+ in all components
• 20 points for "Superior" English: IELTS 8.0+ in all bands, or PTE 79+ in all components

The 10-point gap between Proficient and Superior is enormous. In practical terms, upgrading from 65 to 79 in PTE is roughly equivalent to earning five additional years of skilled work experience. For Pakistani professionals building toward 90 points, Superior English is often the difference between a competitive profile and a waiting profile.

Why PTE Has Become the Preferred Test for Pakistani Applicants

Predictable scoring mechanism: IELTS Speaking and Writing bands are scored by human examiners. Examiners in Pakistan have historically given Pakistani test-takers lower Writing bands than their actual performance warrants — a consistent pattern reported across multiple test centers. The same script that earns a 7.5 from one examiner may score 6.5 from another.

PTE is entirely computer-scored. The AI scoring system evaluates pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling without examiner subjectivity. Pakistani test-takers with strong formal English — which many IT and engineering professionals have — consistently report that PTE's computer scoring reflects their actual ability more accurately than IELTS human scoring.

The Speaking component: IELTS Speaking is a live 11–14 minute interview with a human examiner. For Pakistani professionals, accent, nervousness, and examiner-specific preferences introduce variability. PTE Speaking involves speaking into a microphone in a test center — structured, time-limited tasks with computer scoring. Most Pakistani professionals find this format more predictable and less anxiety-inducing.

Faster results: PTE results are typically available within 48 hours of the test. IELTS results take 13 calendar days (paper-based) or 3–5 days (computer-delivered). When you are managing a migration timeline where your skills assessment result might arrive any day, the ability to get a PTE result in 48 hours and immediately update your EOI is practically valuable.

Retake flexibility: PTE can be booked at short notice and retaken quickly. If one component comes back at 76 when you need 79, you can retake within days. IELTS requires more lead time for booking.

When IELTS Might Still Make Sense

IELTS is deeply embedded in Pakistani academic preparation culture. Pakistani universities, coaching centers, and professional networks have decades of experience with IELTS preparation. If you have already prepared extensively for IELTS, have IELTS scores in hand, and are at or above the 7.0 threshold, using your existing IELTS result and targeting 8.0 in a resit is a viable path.

IELTS also remains relevant for applicants pursuing the nursing pathway, where the Occupational English Test (OET) is sometimes preferred for ANMAC registration purposes. However, for the Australian PR points test itself, IELTS and PTE are equivalent — the choice is purely strategic.

The 79+ Target in PTE: Is It Achievable?

PTE scores each component on a scale from 10 to 90. A score of 79 in all four components (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is not the same as achieving 79 on the overall test — you must reach 79 in every individual component.

For Pakistani professionals with strong reading and listening skills but weaker writing or speaking scores, the challenge is typically in Writing (specifically the Summarize Written Text and Write Essay tasks) and in Speaking (the Read Aloud and Describe Image tasks, which require fluent connected speech).

Realistic preparation timeline for 79+ in all components:

• Applicants starting from a strong foundation (IELTS 7.0+ in all bands, or equivalent professional English): 4–8 weeks of PTE-specific preparation
• Applicants at IELTS 6.5 or below: 12–20 weeks of structured preparation

The key preparation insight for Pakistani test-takers: PTE Writing rewards specific structural formats. The Write Essay task's scoring algorithm responds well to clear argument structure, varied vocabulary, and minimal grammatical errors. There are documented high-scoring structural templates for Pakistani PTE candidates that consistently perform above 79 in the Writing component. Use them.

Score Equivalence Reference

Note: the 79 threshold for Superior English in PTE is a hard cutoff. A score of 78 in one component means you earn 10 points (Proficient), not 20. Given how significant that 10-point difference is in practice, it is worth targeting 80–83 in all components to have a buffer.

Language Score Validity for Skilled Migration

Both IELTS and PTE Academic scores are valid for three years from the test date for skilled migration purposes (and for most assessing authority submissions). Skills assessments from ACS and Engineers Australia also require a language test result as part of the assessment — this is separate from the visa points test but often the same test result can serve both purposes.

Plan your language testing timing so that your result will still be valid at the time you lodge your visa application. If you sit PTE in early 2024, your result expires in early 2027 — fine if your visa is lodged before then, but a problem if the process runs long.
