Superior English for Australia PR: How to Hit IELTS 8 or PTE 79
Superior English for Australia PR: How to Hit IELTS 8 or PTE 79
The difference between 10 and 20 points on the English component of the 189 visa points test is the difference between viable and competitive. Proficient English — IELTS 7.0 or PTE 65 — earns you 10 points and keeps you in the 189 applicant pool. Superior English — IELTS 8.0 in every band, or PTE Academic 79 in every component — earns you 20 points and puts you at the top of the queue within your tier.
For Tier 3 and Tier 4 applicants, Superior English is not an optional upgrade. It is functionally mandatory. At the cut-off scores required in 2025–2026 rounds (85–90 for Tier 3, 95–105 for Tier 4), an applicant running only Proficient English is starting the points calculation already 10 points behind every competitor who has cleared the Superior bar.
What Each English Level Means for Points
| Level | IELTS score | PTE Academic | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competent English (minimum for EOI eligibility) | 6.0 in each band | 50 in each component | 0 |
| Proficient English | 7.0 in each band | 65 in each component | 10 |
| Superior English | 8.0 in each band | 79 in each component | 20 |
The key word in every row is "each." A single band below the threshold means you do not score at that level, regardless of your overall or average score. An IELTS result of L:9.0, R:8.5, W:7.5, S:8.0 is Proficient English — not Superior — because Writing is below 8.0.
This band-by-band requirement is where most test-takers fall short. They are capable of 8.0+ in Listening and Reading but consistently cap at 7.0–7.5 in Writing or Speaking.
Choosing Between IELTS and PTE
Both IELTS Academic (or IELTS General Training) and PTE Academic are accepted for the 189 visa and most state nomination programs. OET and TOEFL iBT are also accepted. For most applicants pursuing Superior English, the practical choice is between IELTS and PTE.
PTE Academic advantages:
- Results within 48 hours (IELTS Academic takes 13 days)
- Computer-scored — eliminates human examiner variability, particularly for Writing and Speaking
- Can be rebooked quickly if a band score falls short
- Integrated skills tasks (speaking while reading, writing from dictation) suit some learners better than the IELTS module structure
IELTS advantages:
- Accepted by more state nomination programs with no caveats
- Generally more familiar to test-takers from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East
- Some applicants find the 8.0 IELTS bar more achievable than PTE 79 for their specific strength profile
If you have previously sat IELTS at 7.0–7.5 and found Writing and Speaking most difficult, PTE's computer-scored format is worth attempting. The marking algorithm eliminates the inconsistency of human examiner judgment on borderline Writing and Speaking responses.
IELTS 8.0 in Each Band: What It Takes
Writing (the hardest band for most): IELTS Writing Band 8 requires "a well-organised answer" with "a wide range of vocabulary used naturally and flexibly" and "a wide range of structures with rare errors." The practical implication: essays must have a clear macro-structure (thesis, evidence, concession, conclusion), varied and precise vocabulary that avoids repetition, and complex sentence constructions used accurately — not cautiously.
The most common band cap at 7.5: formulaic essay structure that demonstrates competence but not sophistication, or minor grammatical errors in complex sentence types (relative clauses, conditionals, passives).
What to target for 8.0: Write on authentic current topics, not on pre-memorized model essay structures. Use collocations naturally (not laboriously inserted "advanced vocabulary"). Vary paragraph length. Spend 5 minutes planning the essay structure before writing.
Speaking (the second-hardest band): Band 8 in Speaking requires "fluency and coherence with only occasional hesitation," "wide vocabulary," and "wide range of structures with rare errors." The examiner is assessing naturalness, range, and accuracy simultaneously.
The most common cap at 7.0: over-cautious pacing, limited topic elaboration, or visible "searching" for vocabulary. Working-level English speakers who communicate effectively at work often score lower than expected because professional communication at work does not require the range IELTS tests for.
Targeted preparation: daily practice with an IELTS Speaking partner or tutor focused on Part 2 (long-turn topics) and Part 3 (abstract discussion). Record yourself and listen for hedging language, filler use, and topic development depth.
Reading and Listening (the achievable bands): Band 8 in Reading and Listening is within reach for most applicants with structured practice. Both are skill-based rather than proficiency-based — question type familiarity and timing strategy matter as much as language level.
For Listening: Practice identifying paraphrase in section 3 and 4 (which have the most distractors). For Reading: Skim-scan-locate-confirm is the foundational technique for True/False/Not Given and Matching Heading questions.

PTE Academic 79: Integrated Tasks and Computer Scoring
Speak: Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence are the highest-weight tasks for both Speaking and Reading scores. Read Aloud requires pronunciation, fluency, and accurate oral rendering of the text. Repeat Sentence requires working memory and accurate reproduction.
Hitting PTE 79 requires strong performance in these cross-scored tasks. Weakness in Repeat Sentence has a multiplier effect because it reduces scores across multiple component areas simultaneously.
Write: Summary and Essay determine Writing score. The Essay requires a sustained argument of 200–300 words with well-organized reasoning. Unlike IELTS, PTE Writing is algorithmically scored — sentence structure variety, grammatical accuracy, and lexical range are all weighted quantitatively.
Enabling Skills — the hidden variable: PTE also assesses "enabling skills" (pronunciation, oral fluency, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, discourse coherence) that do not appear as explicit task types but contribute to the component scores. Consistent errors in grammar or spelling depress these enabling scores and create a ceiling on the overall component scores.
Practical PTE preparation strategy: Use PTE practice platforms with scored mock tests. Target the specific tasks where your mock scores fall below 79. Repeat Sentence and Read Aloud are the fastest tasks to improve through volume practice.
English Test Validity for the 189 Visa
English test results are valid for 3 years for Australian immigration purposes — not 2 years as commonly misunderstood. However, the result must still be valid at the time the invitation is issued (not just at the time of EOI lodgement). If your test result expires while your EOI is sitting in the pool, your EOI may be deemed invalid by SkillSelect.
If you are on a borderline score at 90 days from expiry of your English result, budget for a resit before the next quarterly round.
