France Talent Passport Requirements: All 10 Categories Explained

Most applicants know they want the Talent Passport. What they don't know is which category they actually qualify for — and that decision shapes your salary threshold, your document list, and how long your permit will last.

The Talent Passport is not one visa. It is a family of ten distinct sub-categories, each with its own eligibility requirements. Getting the category wrong means a rejection. Here's a complete breakdown of what each category requires.

Category 1: Qualified Employee (Salarié Qualifié)

This is the most common entry point for skilled professionals hired by French companies.

Requirements:

  • A diploma equivalent to a Master's degree or higher (Master Spécialisé, Master of Science, or equivalent accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles)
  • An employment contract of more than three months
  • Gross annual salary of at least €39,582

The diploma must be translated into French by a sworn (assermenté) translator if issued in another language. The employer completes a CERFA form (typically 15617 or its ANEF digital equivalent) confirming the contract terms and salary.

This is the strategic route for international graduates who studied in France — it allows a seamless transition from student status to a four-year work permit.

Category 2: Employee of an Innovative Company (Jeune Entreprise Innovante)

Same salary threshold as Category 1, but the employer must be officially recognized as innovative.

Requirements:

  • Employer holds Jeune Entreprise Innovante (JEI) status from Bpifrance or the French Tech mission
  • The employee's role directly supports R&D projects at the company
  • Gross annual salary of at least €39,582
  • Employment contract of more than three months

The critical risk here: the JEI status must be valid at both the time of application and at renewal. If the company loses JEI certification, you need to switch to the Qualified Employee or EU Blue Card category, which means meeting their respective thresholds.

Category 3: EU Blue Card (Highly Skilled Employee)

The top-tier route, designed for senior specialists and executives. Carries enhanced intra-EU mobility rights after 18 months in France.

Requirements:

  • Three-year higher education diploma, or five years of comparable professional experience
  • Employment contract of more than three months
  • Gross annual salary of at least €59,373 (standard)
  • Or €47,498 for STEM shortage occupations

The EU Blue Card also allows intra-EU mobility — after a qualifying period in France, you can relocate to other EU member states with simplified procedures. This makes it the preferred choice for multinational companies managing regional leadership teams.

Category 4: Researcher (Chercheur)

Designed for scientists, academics, and research professionals.

Requirements:

  • A Convention d'Accueil (hosting agreement) signed by a recognized French research institution
  • No mandatory SMIC-based salary floor — the institution must demonstrate the researcher has sufficient resources (typically governed by institutional pay scales or research grants)
  • The permit duration matches the research project, up to four years

Eligible institutions include CNRS laboratories, INSERM, grandes écoles, and public universities. The Convention d'Accueil must be signed by both the host institution and the local Préfectural authority.

Category 5: Business Creator (Créateur d'Entreprise)

For individuals establishing a commercial, artisanal, or industrial business in France.

Requirements:

  • Personal investment of at least €30,000 demonstrated in the business project
  • A viable business plan contributing to the local economy
  • A Master's degree or five years of relevant professional experience
  • The business must be at the creation stage — this route doesn't apply to acquiring an existing business

The €30,000 is a minimum and must be demonstrable through bank transfer records or capitalization documents. Immigration officers evaluate both the investment amount and the economic viability of the plan.

Category 6: Economic Investor (Investisseur Économique)

For high-net-worth individuals making a significant direct investment in French industry or commerce.

Requirements:

  • Minimum investment of €300,000 in fixed tangible or intangible assets
  • Must be a direct investment: equity stake of at least 10% or a capital increase in a French company
  • Commitment to creating or maintaining employment within four years of the investment
  • Purely financial or speculative investments (bonds, funds) do not qualify

Proof of investment includes transfer records, the company's Extrait Kbis registration, and a formal commitment to job creation signed by the legal representative.

Category 7: Corporate Officer (Mandataire Social)

For managing directors and legal representatives of French entities.

Requirements:

  • At least three months of prior employment or corporate officer status within the same corporate group before the French relocation
  • Gross annual salary of at least €65,629 (3x the 2026 SMIC)
  • Evidence of appointment as legal representative (board meeting minutes)

This is the executive track. The high salary threshold reflects the seniority required and the legal responsibility of representing a French entity. This category cannot be used for junior or mid-level management roles.

Category 8: Artistic and Cultural Professions

For professional artists, performers, and authors.

Requirements:

  • Production or engagement contract covering at least three months
  • Financial resources of at least 70% of the SMIC (€15,313 annually in 2026)
  • At least 70% of those resources must come from artistic activity
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating professional artistic activity

The financial threshold adapts to the fluctuating nature of artistic income. Bank statements showing prior artistic income, plus contracts for upcoming engagements, form the core of the dossier.

Category 9: International Reputation (Renommée Nationale ou Internationale)

For individuals recognized internationally in science, literature, sport, or the arts.

Requirements:

  • Evidence of awards, prestigious publications, international media features, or other recognition of exceptional status
  • Financial resources of at least the annual SMIC (€21,876 in 2026)
  • No employment contract required

This is the most flexible category but also the most subjective. The evidence must clearly demonstrate recognized achievement at a national or international level — not just a strong professional career.

Category 10: Medical and Pharmacy Professions

Requirements:

  • French medical or pharmacy license
  • Role in a public health establishment
  • Gross annual salary of at least €41,386 (based on the associate doctor pay scale)

Which Category Fits You?

The most common decision point is between the Qualified Employee and the EU Blue Card. If your salary is between €39,582 and €59,373, the Qualified Employee is your only option among those two. If you can negotiate a salary above €59,373, the EU Blue Card's intra-EU mobility benefits are worth pursuing — especially if you work for a multinational.

For researchers, don't apply as a Qualified Employee when you have a Convention d'Accueil available — the researcher category has no salary floor and is designed specifically for your situation.
