UAE Golden Visa Salary Requirement: The Basic Salary Trap Explained
UAE Golden Visa Salary Requirement: The Basic Salary Trap Explained
The number most people quote for the UAE Golden Visa salary requirement is AED 30,000. That is correct. What is frequently misunderstood is what that number means — and it is a distinction that causes a significant number of professional applications to be rejected.
The AED 30,000 threshold applies to your basic salary only. Not your total monthly package. Not your gross compensation. The housing allowance, transport allowance, school fees, and any other non-basic components are excluded entirely. The immigration system reads the figure on your MoHRE (Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation)-registered labor contract under "Basic Salary" and that number alone determines whether you qualify.
Why the Basic Salary Trap Catches People Out
A professional earning AED 38,000 per month gross might reasonably assume they meet the threshold. But if their MoHRE contract shows:
- Basic Salary: AED 24,000
- Housing Allowance: AED 8,000
- Transport Allowance: AED 3,000
- School Fees: AED 3,000
Their application will be rejected. The system does not add the components together. It reads the basic salary field and stops at AED 24,000 — below the AED 30,000 required.
This shift from "total remuneration" to "basic salary" was introduced in late 2024 and took full effect through 2025. Many applicants who were told they qualified under the old rules are now ineligible under the current framework.
The Four Requirements for the Professional Category
Salary is one of four conditions that must all be met simultaneously. A high basic salary alone is not sufficient:
1. Minimum AED 30,000 basic salary. As described above — the figure in the "Basic Salary" field on your MoHRE-registered employment contract.
2. MoHRE Occupational Level 1 or 2. Your registered job title must be classified under Level 1 (Managers and Executives) or Level 2 (Professionals in science, engineering, healthcare, education, law, culture). If your MoHRE contract lists your title as "Technician" or "Supervisor" rather than "Engineer" or "Manager," you may be falling under Level 3 — which is ineligible regardless of salary.
3. Attested Bachelor's degree with MOE Equivalency Certificate. Your foreign degree must complete the four-stage attestation chain (home country → UAE MOFA) and receive an Equivalency Certificate from the UAE Ministry of Education.
4. Valid UAE employment contract and active work permit. The work permit must be current and linked to an active employer in the UAE.
How to Check Your Basic Salary Figure
Your MoHRE-registered basic salary is not necessarily what your offer letter or payslip shows. Companies sometimes structure their MoHRE filings differently from the informal compensation letter given to employees.
To verify your registered basic salary:
- Check the UAE MOHRE app (available on iOS and Android) under "My Contracts"
- Contact your HR or PRO department and request a copy of the MoHRE-registered labor contract
- If there is a discrepancy, the MoHRE figure is what matters — not the payslip or offer letter

The Six to Twelve Month Consistency Requirement
Meeting the AED 30,000 basic salary at the time of application is necessary but may not be sufficient. Many applicants report that authorities — particularly in some Emirates — want to see a consistent salary history through the WPS (Wage Protection System) before approving the application.
The concern is "salary spiking" — where an employer temporarily increases a basic salary specifically to secure a Golden Visa for an employee, then reverts it afterward. To counter this, processing centers in some Emirates request 6 to 12 months of WPS transfer records showing consistent receipt of the qualifying salary.
Applying immediately after a salary increase to AED 30,000 carries more risk than applying after six months of consistent WPS records at that level.
If Your Basic Salary Falls Short
Several options exist for professionals whose basic salary is below the threshold but whose total package is at or above it.
Salary restructuring: Discuss with your HR department whether the compensation structure can be revised to increase the basic salary component and reduce allowances accordingly. This requires updating the MoHRE-registered contract — it is not sufficient to issue an informal letter. The WPS records must then reflect the new structure for a sustained period before applying.
Alternative category: Some professionals in tech, healthcare, engineering, or education may qualify through the Exceptional Talent route rather than the standard skilled professional category. The talent route does not have a salary threshold — it requires an endorsement from the relevant ministry or authority. A doctor qualifying through DHA accreditation, for instance, is not subject to the AED 30,000 basic salary test.
Property investment route: An individual who does not meet the salary threshold but has the ability to purchase a UAE property valued at AED 2 million or more can qualify through the real estate investor pathway instead. As of February 2026, 100% mortgage financing is accepted with no minimum down payment requirement.
Senior Executive Threshold
The AED 30,000 basic salary threshold is for the standard skilled professional category (Levels 1 and 2). A separate "Senior Executive" tier exists requiring AED 50,000 in basic salary and at least 5 years of verified experience in a leadership role. This tier carries slightly different documentation requirements, including evidence of the position held and the years of experience, but the same MoHRE level classification applies.
