PTE vs IELTS: Which Is Easier for Immigration?
If you have a 6.5 in IELTS Writing and need a 7.0 to qualify for your visa, you have probably already spent hours on Reddit reading about PTE. The short answer everyone gives is "PTE is easier." The more useful answer is: PTE is different, and whether it works better for you depends on where your specific weaknesses sit.
Why "Easier" Is the Wrong Frame
IELTS and PTE test the same four skills — Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing — but they measure them through completely different mechanisms. IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a human examiner who can probe your answers and follow up. PTE Speaking is a microphone, a prompt, and 25 to 40 seconds to deliver a structured response to software.
IELTS Writing is evaluated by a trained human rater applying a rubric that weighs ideas, coherence, vocabulary, and grammar. PTE Writing is scored by the Intelligent Essay Assessor, which evaluates syntactic complexity, lexical range, and adherence to the prompt — not the quality of your argument.
Neither test is universally easier. The question is which format aligns with your strengths.
IELTS to PTE Score Conversion
Pearson publishes official concordance tables mapping PTE scores to IELTS bands. Here are the key immigration-relevant equivalents:
| PTE Academic Score | IELTS Band Equivalent | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 79 – 84 | 8.0 | Superior English (Australia PR +20 points) |
| 65 – 72 | 7.5 | Between Proficient and Superior |
| 58 – 64 | 7.0 | Proficient (Australia PR +10 points) |
| 50 – 57 | 6.5 | Competent-plus |
| 42 – 49 | 6.0 | Competent (Australia minimum for eligibility) |
The 10-to-90 point scale of PTE allows more granular progress tracking than IELTS's 0.5-band increments. A score of 64 is one point from the IELTS 7.0 equivalent — that kind of specificity helps you calibrate your preparation.
Where PTE Tends to Favour Former IELTS Candidates
Writing. This is the most common reason candidates switch. IELTS Writing Task 2 is scored by a human examiner who may weigh originality, argumentation depth, or stylistic choices differently across sittings. PTE's AI engine applies the same mathematical model every time. Candidates who have consistently scored 6.5 in IELTS Writing despite technically competent essays often find they can get the equivalent of 7.0+ in PTE Writing by learning what the AI specifically rewards: formal academic vocabulary, clear topic sentences, syntactic variety, and word count compliance.
Speed of results. PTE results are typically available within 48 hours. IELTS paper-based results take 13 days; computer-based IELTS takes 3 to 5 days. For Express Entry applicants with invitation deadlines, or for anyone managing a tight visa timeline, the 48-hour turnaround is a material advantage.
Rebooking flexibility. PTE tests are available year-round at over 400 locations, and in many cities you can book with 24 hours' notice. If you want to retake the test after one week of targeted drilling, PTE makes that logistically possible in a way IELTS does not.
No human speaking examiner. Candidates who find the IELTS Speaking interview stressful — the face-to-face format, the risk of the examiner influencing the score through their reactions — often perform better when speaking to a microphone. The PTE AI scores on rhythm, phoneme clarity, and fluency rate. There is no personality variable.

Where IELTS Tends to Favour Candidates
Natural writers. If your strength is constructing strong arguments and you write instinctively in a clear, varied style, IELTS Writing rewards that quality more directly than PTE's algorithmic scoring. The PTE system can penalize high-quality writing that uses unconventional structures or complex sentence forms that confuse the NLP engine.
Slow typists. PTE requires you to type all writing responses. If you type fewer than 25 words per minute, the time pressure in Write Essay (20 minutes for 200–300 words) and Summarize Written Text (10 minutes for one complex sentence) will cost you marks. IELTS allows handwriting, which removes this constraint.
Strong face-to-face communicators. Some candidates have genuine conversational English ability that comes across well in a spontaneous human conversation but does not translate well to the structured, template-driven PTE Speaking format. If your IELTS Speaking scores have consistently been your highest, switching to PTE could reduce your Speaking score while improving other sections.
PTE to IELTS Score Comparison: The Decision Framework
The most useful way to make this decision is to take one scored practice test for both. Pearson's official scored practice test costs $35 USD and uses the real scoring engine. An IELTS practice test with Cambridge materials gives you a human-scored Writing sample you can get reviewed.
Choose PTE if:
- Your IELTS Writing score has been stuck at 6.0 or 6.5 across multiple attempts
- You type confidently and at reasonable speed
- You need results within 48 hours
- You are applying to Australia PR and need 79+ (Superior English) — PTE's scoring system offers a clearer pathway to this specific target than IELTS 8.0
Choose IELTS if:
- Your IELTS Speaking scores have consistently been your best section
- You prefer or need handwriting for your essays
- Your target institution explicitly requires IELTS (some UK universities and some Canadian provinces have IELTS-specific requirements)
- You have unlimited preparation time and your existing IELTS study materials are strong
A Note on Canadian Immigration
For Canadian Permanent Residency through Express Entry (FSW, CEC), IRCC requires PTE Core — not PTE Academic. This is a common source of confusion. PTE Academic is accepted for Canadian study permits (SDS stream: overall 60 required) but will not be accepted for a PR application. If Canada PR is your goal, verify whether your specific stream requires PTE Core before preparing for PTE Academic.
The PTE Academic Preparation Guide includes a full country-by-country score requirements table, a score conversion reference, and a task-by-task strategy section covering every question type in PTE Academic. If you are switching from IELTS, there is a dedicated section on the mindset and technique shifts required to optimize for AI scoring rather than human evaluation.
