Visa Cancellation UAE: What Happens Next and How Long You Have
Losing a job in the UAE triggers a clock. Once your employment visa is cancelled, you have a defined window to either change your status or leave the country — and the length of that window depends entirely on your professional classification.
Understanding what happens the moment your visa is cancelled is one of the most practically important things any UAE resident can know.
How Visa Cancellation Works
The employer initiates visa cancellation through the MOHRE portal or their PRO. Once the cancellation request is submitted and processed:
- Your employment relationship is legally terminated
- The ICP system updates your residency status to "Cancelled"
- Your grace period begins from the official cancellation date — not the date your last day of work was, and not the date you found out
You can verify the exact cancellation date and your grace period start on the ICP Smart Services portal (smartservices.icp.gov.ae) or the GDRFA app if you are based in Dubai.
Grace Periods by Skill Level (2026)
The 2026 framework has tiered grace periods based on your MOHRE skill classification:
| Category | Grace Period |
|---|---|
| Skill Level 1 (Managers, Professionals) | 180 days |
| Skill Level 2 (Technicians, Specialists) | 180 days |
| Green Visa holders | 180 days |
| Golden Visa holders | 180 days |
| Skill Level 3 (General workers) | 30 days |
| Domestic workers | 30 days |
| Widows / divorcees | 180 days (from date of event) |
For most white-collar professionals — engineers, accountants, IT workers, finance roles, healthcare professionals — the 180-day grace period provides a substantial runway to find a new position without leaving the country.
For blue-collar workers and domestic workers, the 30-day window is tight, and exit arrangements often need to start immediately.
What You Can Do During the Grace Period
During the grace period, your options are:
1. Transfer to a new employer (status change) The most common route for professionals. Your new employer submits a work permit application to MOHRE, and once approved, your status changes from "cancelled" to "active under new sponsor" without you leaving the UAE. There is no "cooling off" period or ban between employers under the 2022 law (bans were largely eliminated for standard resignation and termination scenarios).
2. Switch to another visa category You can convert to a spouse or family sponsorship if your partner earns the required AED 4,000+ monthly, or apply for the UAE Green Visa if you qualify (freelancers, skilled professionals meeting the criteria). Some people convert to a visit visa extension to buy additional time.
3. Exit the country If you plan to leave the UAE, doing so before the grace period ends avoids all overstay fines. There is no penalty for leaving during the grace period.

Overstay Fines After the Grace Period
If you remain in the UAE beyond your grace period without valid status:
- Fine: AED 50 per day
- These fines accumulate without limit and must be paid before you can exit or change status
- At the airport, the immigration system flags overstays automatically
Fines from previous overstays can also affect future UAE visa applications.
Do You Need to Leave to Change Jobs?
No. Under the 2022 law, status change (changing employer while remaining inside the UAE) is standard. You do not need to leave and re-enter unless you or your employer choose to use a new entry permit rather than a status change.
The status change fee is approximately AED 550–650 and is the new employer's obligation to pay.
What to Do Immediately After Visa Cancellation
- Verify the exact cancellation date on the ICP portal — do not assume the date HR told you
- Retrieve your physical Emirates ID (your employer cannot hold it once the visa is cancelled)
- Ensure you have received your final settlement (salary, leave, and gratuity) within 14 days
- Begin your job search or make a departure plan before the grace period ends
If your employer cancels your visa before providing the final settlement, this is a separate MOHRE violation you can report concurrently.
Resignation vs Termination: Does It Affect the Cancellation Process?
For the grace period, it makes no difference. Whether you resigned or were made redundant, the same grace periods apply and the same options are available.
The distinction matters for gratuity entitlement (you receive full gratuity in either scenario under the 2022 law, provided you served at least one year) and for whether a court case arises over notice periods.
