Certificate of Sponsorship UK: How to Get One from Pakistan

You have a job offer. The UK employer says they want to hire you. Then comes the question that ends many offers: "Are you sponsored?" And for Pakistani professionals applying from outside the UK, the entire visa hinges on the answer. A Certificate of Sponsorship is not something you apply for yourself — it is something your UK employer assigns to you — and that distinction trips up thousands of applicants every year.

Here is exactly how the Certificate of Sponsorship works for Pakistani professionals, what your employer needs to do to issue one, and what you need to do to make sure nothing goes wrong between the CoS being assigned and your visa being approved.

What a Certificate of Sponsorship Actually Is

A Certificate of Sponsorship is not a document. It is a 12-character reference number generated inside a system called the Sponsor Management System, which only licensed UK employers can access. When your employer assigns a CoS to you, they are formally telling the Home Office: this person has a job, at this salary, under this occupation code, starting on this date.

You enter that reference number in your online Skilled Worker visa application on GOV.UK. The Home Office then cross-checks every detail — your name, job title, SOC 2020 occupation code, salary, and start date — against what the employer entered. Any mismatch triggers a Request for Further Information or, in the worst cases, a refusal.

There are two types of CoS. A Defined CoS is used when you are applying from Pakistan (outside the UK). An Undefined CoS is for in-country switches. As a Pakistan-based applicant, you will always need a Defined CoS.

What Your Employer Must Do First

Before your employer can assign a CoS, they must hold a valid Sponsor Licence from the Home Office. Many UK companies — especially smaller businesses — do not have one. This is the most common obstacle Pakistani professionals face.

If your employer does not have a licence, they need to apply for one. The Home Office charges £536 for small or charitable organisations and £1,476 for medium or large businesses. Processing typically takes eight weeks, though it can be faster. Critically, the employer must also assign internal HR staff as "Authorising Officers" and "Key Contacts" who will manage the sponsorship system. For a company that has never sponsored a worker, this is a real administrative commitment.

Once licensed, the employer can assign a Defined CoS from their sponsor management system. Each CoS costs £525, paid by the employer. The government also publishes a searchable register of licensed sponsors — you can check whether a company already holds a licence before accepting an offer, which saves both parties time.

What Goes on the CoS and Why It Matters

The employer populates the CoS with your details. These fields must be consistent with your Pakistani passport name exactly — not your nickname, not a shortened version. Pakistani naming conventions sometimes create conflicts here: if your degree is in the name "Muhammad Ali Khan" but your passport reads "M. A. Khan," the CoS must still match your passport. This is the document the Home Office checks against.

The salary entered on the CoS must meet the going rate for the occupation code and the general Skilled Worker threshold. As of 2026, most roles require a minimum of £38,700, though shortage occupation list roles and health and care worker roles have different thresholds. If the salary on the CoS is a single rupee below the threshold for your occupation code, the application will fail even if your employer agreed to pay more verbally.

The CoS also specifies a start date for your employment. You must apply for your visa within three months of the CoS being assigned, and you must not enter the UK for work before the start date on the CoS.

The Conversation That Gets You Sponsored from Pakistan

The hardest part of getting a CoS from Pakistan is convincing a UK employer to sponsor an overseas candidate when they have never done it before. Most small and medium employers have a reflexive aversion to the phrase "visa sponsorship" because they assume it is expensive, slow, or legally risky. It is none of those things if the candidate handles the groundwork.

When approaching UK employers, clarify three things upfront: first, that the employer pays only £525 per CoS assignment and £1,476 for a one-time sponsor licence if they do not already have one; second, that they do not become your legal guarantor for your stay in the UK (a common misconception); third, that the process can run alongside your notice period in Pakistan, so your actual start date in the UK can be six to eight weeks after the job offer — not months away.

The 240-day window after submitting your online visa application gives strategic flexibility. Once the employer assigns the CoS and you submit online, you have 240 days to book your biometric appointment at VFS Pakistan. This means you can lock in the current rules and fees even if you are waiting on HEC degree attestation or a bank statement update.

What Happens After the CoS Is Assigned

Once you have the 12-character CoS reference number, your next steps run in parallel:

  • Complete your online Skilled Worker application on GOV.UK and pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
  • Book a VFS Global biometric appointment in Islamabad, Lahore, or Karachi.
  • Prepare your supporting documents: HEC-attested degree certificates, TB certificate from an IOM clinic, Ecctis statement of comparability (if your English qualification is a Pakistani degree), and 28 days of bank statements showing at least £1,270.

The CoS does not expire immediately, but the three-month application window from assignment is firm. Delays in HEC attestation or TB test appointments — both of which are common in Pakistan — have derailed applications by pushing them past the CoS validity window. The practical approach is to start HEC attestation and the IOM TB test appointment before the CoS is formally assigned, using the employer's verbal commitment as a trigger.
