DigiD Netherlands: How to Apply and Why You Need It as an Expat
You have your BSN. You have your Dutch bank account. You have your KvK registration. And now every government website in the Netherlands wants you to log in with something called DigiD — and you have no idea what it is or how to get it.
DigiD (Digital Identity) is the Dutch government's single sign-on system. It is your login credential for the Belastingdienst (tax portal), your health insurance claims, municipality services, the IND status checker, and dozens of other digital services. Without it, you cannot file your quarterly VAT returns online, cannot check your tax assessment, and cannot manage your health insurance — which means you are doing everything by post or by phone, in Dutch, during business hours.
What DigiD Actually Does
DigiD functions like a government-issued username and password that links to your BSN (Citizen Service Number). When you log into any government portal — Belastingdienst, MijnOverheid, the UWV, your health insurer — you authenticate through DigiD. The system confirms your identity via your BSN, and the service provider gets verified proof of who you are.
There are three authentication levels. The basic level uses a username, password, and SMS code. The "substantieel" level adds the DigiD app with a PIN. The highest level, "hoog," uses the NFC chip in your identity document. For most expat purposes — tax filing, health insurance, municipality services — the basic SMS level or the app level is sufficient.
How to Apply for DigiD
The process is straightforward but has one unavoidable delay: an activation code sent by physical post.
Step 1: Go to digid.nl and click "Aanvragen" (Apply). You need your BSN and a Dutch residential address registered in the BRP.
Step 2: Enter your BSN, date of birth, and postal code. DigiD cross-references these against the BRP database. If your municipality registration is not yet processed, the application will fail — you must wait until your BRP registration is confirmed.
Step 3: Choose a username and password. The username must be unique and at least 6 characters. Write both down somewhere secure.
Step 4: Wait for the activation letter. DigiD sends a physical letter to your registered BRP address containing an activation code. This takes 1 to 5 business days within the Netherlands.
Step 5: Return to digid.nl, log in with your new username and password, and enter the activation code from the letter. Add your mobile number for SMS verification.
Step 6 (recommended): Download the DigiD app from the App Store or Google Play. The app provides faster, more secure authentication than SMS codes, and is required for some services.
Why Timing Matters for DAFT Applicants
If you are in the Netherlands on a DAFT visa, DigiD becomes essential by month two. Your first quarterly VAT filing is due within weeks of your KvK registration. The Belastingdienst portal requires DigiD login. Without it, you are filing paper forms or calling the Belastingdienst phone line — which operates in Dutch.
The most common mistake: waiting too long to apply. DigiD requires a confirmed BRP registration, which requires a BSN, which requires a gemeente appointment. If you are in Amsterdam, where gemeente appointments are booked 6 to 8 weeks out, your DigiD activation can be delayed by two months or more. Apply for DigiD the day your BRP registration is confirmed. The activation letter arrives within days, and you are set for every government interaction from that point forward.

Common DigiD Problems for Americans
Address mismatch. If you move and update your BRP address, your DigiD is automatically linked to the new address. But if you applied for DigiD before your BRP address was fully updated, the activation letter goes to the wrong address. Check MijnOverheid.nl for your registered address before applying.
Expired activation code. The activation code in the letter expires after 20 days. If you miss the window, you must request a new code — which means another letter, another 1 to 5 days.
Two-factor issues. If you change your phone number, you need to update your DigiD SMS settings before the old number becomes inactive. Losing access to your DigiD two-factor method means requesting identity verification by post, which takes days.
What You Can Do With DigiD
Once activated, DigiD gives you access to the services that matter most as a self-employed person in the Netherlands:
- Belastingdienst — file quarterly VAT returns, check provisional assessments, file your annual income tax return
- MijnOverheid — receive official government correspondence digitally instead of by post
- Health insurer portal — manage your basisverzekering, submit claims, check coverage
- IND — check the status of your residence permit application
- Municipality — request BRP extracts, update personal details
- SVB — request your Certificate of Coverage for US tax purposes
