Emirates ID Renewal: How Long It Takes and What to Do

The Emirates ID is your primary identity document as a UAE resident — without it, you cannot open a bank account, collect a parcel, or access most government services. Renewals are tied directly to your residence visa, which means the timing is controlled by your employer's PRO (Public Relations Officer) more than by you. Knowing the sequence in advance prevents gaps in your legal status.

When Emirates ID Renewal Happens

Your Emirates ID is always renewed alongside your residence visa. The two share the same validity period — typically two or three years — and are processed simultaneously. You cannot independently renew the Emirates ID separate from your visa.

Renewal becomes available 180 days before the expiry date. Most employers begin the process 30–60 days before expiry. If you notice your expiry approaching and your employer has not started the process, raise it proactively — delays are common, and an expired Emirates ID creates friction across all government services.

The Renewal Process

For employment visa holders, the renewal sequence is:

  1. Employer initiates on MOHRE — the company's PRO submits a renewal of the labour contract and work permit
  2. ICP processes residency renewal — once MOHRE approves, the residency file moves to the ICP or GDRFA
  3. Emirates ID biometrics — if your fingerprints have changed or this is a periodic cycle, you may need to revisit an ICP-approved centre; otherwise, existing biometrics are reused
  4. Physical card production — the card is printed and dispatched by courier (usually Aramex or Emirates Post) to your registered UAE address

The digital residency record in the ICP system is updated before the physical card arrives. Once the system shows "Active," your Emirates ID number is valid for all government and banking purposes even if you do not yet have the new card in hand.

How Long Does Emirates ID Take?

Under normal conditions in 2026:

  • Digital record activation: 5–7 working days from residency approval
  • Physical card delivery: 7–14 working days after digital activation
  • Total from application to card in hand: typically 3–4 weeks

The physical card is dispatched by courier. You receive an SMS notification with a tracking number. If you have not received the card within 14 days of dispatch, you can report it missing and request a replacement through the ICP Smart App.

For new employees (first-time Emirates ID issuance rather than renewal), the timeline is the same, but it starts only after the medical test and biometrics are completed in person.

Fees for Emirates ID Renewal

Fees are set by ICP and depend on the residency duration:

These fees are the employer's legal obligation to pay — along with all other employment visa fees. UAE law explicitly prohibits employers from recovering visa costs from employees. If your employer asks you to pay for your own Emirates ID renewal, this is a violation you can report to MOHRE.

Checking Emirates ID Status

Once the renewal process is underway, you can track it on the ICP Smart Services portal (smartservices.icp.gov.ae) using your Emirates ID number or passport details. The portal shows the current stage — under review, approved, card dispatched.

What If Your Emirates ID Expires Before Renewal Is Complete?

This is more common than it should be. The Emirates ID card expires, but if your residence visa is still being processed for renewal, your legal status is not automatically affected. Your employer should provide you with an official status letter explaining that the renewal is in progress.

For banking transactions, most UAE banks will accept the letter together with the expired card during a renewal cycle. Government service counters handle this routinely. However, if you need to travel internationally and return while the renewal is pending, confirm with your employer that your entry permit status allows re-entry — your old visa will show as expired even if the renewal is legally active.

Emirates ID After New Employment Visa

If you are starting a new job in the UAE (rather than renewing with the same employer), the Emirates ID process follows the standard employment visa sequence:

  1. Entry permit issued (entry permit valid 60 days)
  2. Enter UAE and complete medical fitness test
  3. Visit ICP-approved biometrics centre for fingerprints and photograph
  4. Wait for residency approval and Emirates ID dispatch

The ICP app shows your Emirates ID number as soon as the digital record is activated, even before the physical card arrives. Download the app and register your mobile number during the biometrics visit — you will receive SMS notifications at each stage.
