UAE Visa Status Check: How to Check Your Visa Online (2026)

Whether you are waiting for your employment visa to be stamped, checking whether your residence is still valid, or verifying an entry permit before you fly, the UAE has moved almost entirely to digital records. The physical sticker in your passport is no longer the authoritative source — the ICP database is.

Here is exactly where to check and what each status means.

The Two Main Systems: ICP vs GDRFA

ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) is the federal authority that issues residence visas and Emirates IDs. Their portal covers all seven emirates and is the primary system to use.

GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) is Dubai's local residency authority. If you live in Dubai and need Dubai-specific enquiries — like the grace period after visa cancellation — the GDRFA app gives more granular information.

For most residency and employment visa queries, start with ICP.

How to Check Your UAE Visa Status

Via the ICP Smart Services Website

  1. Go to smartservices.icp.gov.ae
  2. Select "Inquiry Services" → "Visa Status"
  3. Enter your passport number, nationality, and date of birth
  4. Your current visa status will display, including issue date, expiry, and visa type

No Emirates ID or UAE phone number is required for this check — it works from outside the country too, which matters if you are waiting for your entry permit before flying.

Via the ICP Smart App

Download the ICP Smart app (available on iOS and Android). Once you log in with your Emirates ID or UAE Pass account, your residency details are displayed on the home screen, including expiry date and any linked family visas.

Via the GDRFA Dubai App (Dubai Residents Only)

For Dubai residents, the Amer service on the GDRFA portal gives real-time status on visa applications, renewal submissions, and cancellations. You can also call the GDRFA hotline at 800-5111.

Understanding the Status Messages

Checking Employment Visa Validity

UAE employment visas (residency linked to an employer) are typically issued for two or three years. The validity period is set when the residency is processed, not when you arrive.

To find your exact expiry, check the ICP portal. Since 2022, physical passport stickers have been replaced by digital records — the ICP entry in the database is definitive, even if your passport has a sticker from an earlier cycle.

If your visa expires and your employer has not initiated renewal, you enter a grace period. For Skill Level 1 and 2 professionals (managerial, technical, specialised roles), the grace period is 180 days. For Skill Level 3 (general labour), it is 30 days. Overstaying beyond the grace period incurs a fine of AED 50 per day.

Checking Status After Visa Cancellation

Once an employer cancels your employment visa, you can check the grace period start date on the GDRFA portal (for Dubai) or the ICP portal. The timer begins on the official cancellation date — not the date you left the company.

During the grace period, you can:

  • Transfer to a new employer (status change)
  • Change to another visa type (visit, student, family sponsorship)
  • Exit the country without fines

If you are a skilled professional (Levels 1 or 2), the 180-day grace period gives you significant time to find a new position without leaving the UAE.

Checking Entry Permit Status Before Arrival

If your employer in the UAE has applied for your work permit and entry permit, you can check status on the ICP portal using only your passport details. An "Entry Permit Issued" status means you can legally travel to the UAE and activate your employment visa within the 60-day validity window.

Do not travel on a tourist or visit visa if your employment entry permit is already issued — you will need to undergo a status change (at a cost of approximately AED 550) rather than simply arriving on the employment entry permit.

Checking Family Member Visa Status

If you sponsor your spouse or children, their visas are linked to yours in the ICP system. You can check dependent visa status by entering their passport details on the ICP portal. When your visa renews, your employer's PRO should renew dependent visas at the same time — but it is worth verifying this yourself, as oversights are common.
