F-2-7 Points System Korea: Full Breakdown and How to Reach 80

The F-2-7 visa has one hard requirement that makes everything else secondary: you need at least 80 points on a 170-point scoring matrix. Miss that threshold by one point and the application is rejected regardless of how long you have lived in Korea or how strong your employment record is.

Understanding how the points are allocated — and where you personally have leverage — is the entire game. Here is the complete breakdown.

The Four Core Categories

The matrix is divided into fundamental items (maximum 130 points) and additional items (maximum +40 bonus, maximum -80 deductions). You need 80 from the combined total.

Age — 25 Points Maximum

Age is the only variable that only ever moves in the wrong direction. The scoring peaks at age 25–29, which represents the Korean government's preference for retaining young talent with the longest potential working lifespan ahead of them.

Age (International Age) Points
18–24 23
25–29 25
30–34 23
35–39 20
40–44 12
45–50 8
51 and older 3

The cliff between 39 and 40 is significant: eight points disappear on your 40th birthday. For anyone approaching that boundary, this creates real urgency. A professional who scores 88 points at age 39 may find themselves at 80 — right at the threshold — on the day they turn 40, with no margin for any deductions.

Professionals in the 40–50 range typically need to compensate through higher income brackets or KIIP Level 5 completion to maintain a workable score.

Education — 25 Points Maximum

The education category distinguishes between STEM fields and non-STEM fields, and rewards both advanced degrees and breadth of academic background.

Degree Level STEM or Multiple Degrees Non-STEM / Single Degree
Ph.D. / Doctorate 25 20
Master's Degree 20 17
Bachelor's Degree 17 15
Associate's Degree 15 10

STEM includes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. If your degree is in engineering, computer science, biology, or a related field, use the STEM column. If you hold two Bachelor's degrees — even if both are in non-STEM subjects — you qualify for the "multiple degrees" score.

A Ph.D. from any institution in a STEM field nets the full 25 points, matching the age peak. This is significant for older academics: a 45-year-old Ph.D. holder only loses 8 points to age but recovers 25 through education — a net 17 points, which is a strong starting position.

Korean Language Proficiency — 20 Points Maximum

Language points are awarded based on either TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) or KIIP (Korea Immigration and Integration Program) completion level. Both pathways yield identical base points for the same level.

Level TOPIK KIIP Points
Advanced Level 5–6 Level 5 (enrolled) 20
Intermediate Level 4 Level 4 15
Intermediate Level 3 Level 3 10
Beginner Level 2 Level 2 5
Beginner Level 1 Level 1 3

The strategic difference between TOPIK and KIIP is significant and covered fully in KIIP vs TOPIK for the F-2-7 visa. The short version: TOPIK scores expire after two years and force repeated testing; KIIP completion certificates do not expire, and KIIP Level 5 completion adds 10 extra bonus points on top of the 20 language points.

Annual Income — 60 Points Maximum

Income is the single most heavily weighted category, accounting for up to 35% of the total possible score. Points are based on the previous year's taxable income as reported on your Certificate of Income Amount (소득금액증명원) from the National Tax Service.

Annual Taxable Income (KRW) Points
₩100 million or more 60
₩90M to < ₩100M 58
₩80M to < ₩90M 56
₩70M to < ₩80M 53
₩60M to < ₩70M 50
₩50M to < ₩60M 45
₩40M to < ₩50M 40
₩30M to < ₩40M 30
Minimum wage to < ₩30M 10
Below minimum wage 0

For 2025 applications, the GNI per capita baseline is ₩49,955,000. Income points interact with GNI in ways that matter beyond just the scoring table — see the dedicated income requirements article for the full picture including freelancer situations.

Bonus Points — Up to 40 Additional Points

Bonus points can close a gap if your fundamental score lands short of 80. They cannot push your score below zero when combined with deductions, but they can meaningfully move the needle.

KIIP Level 5 Completion Bonus — 10 points Completing the full Level 5 course (70 hours of coursework plus passing the Comprehensive Evaluation) earns 10 additional points. This is entirely separate from the 20 language points — you can claim both. For many applicants, this 10-point bonus is what tips a 72-point profile to 82.

Top Global University — up to 30 points If your degree is from a university in the QS World University Rankings Top 500 or the Times Higher Education Top 200, you receive bonus points based on degree level:

  • Ph.D.: 30 bonus points
  • Master's: 20 bonus points
  • Bachelor's: 15 bonus points

Korean Domestic University — up to 10 points Degrees earned within Korea at any accredited institution earn smaller bonuses:

  • Ph.D.: 10 bonus points
  • Master's: 7 bonus points
  • Bachelor's: 5 bonus points

These domestic university bonuses stack well for graduates on the fast-track D-2 to F-2-7 pathway, where the absence of a three-year residency requirement already removes a major hurdle.

Volunteer Service — up to 7 points Three or more years of documented volunteer service with a registered Korean organization adds 7 points. This is one of the few bonus categories that does not require academic credentials and is available to anyone willing to invest the time.

Government Recommendation — 20 points A formal recommendation from a central administrative agency. Rare in practice but mentioned for completeness.

War Ally Talent — 20 points Available to nationals of countries that participated alongside South Korea in the Korean War. Americans, British, Australians, Canadians, Filipinos, and several others qualify. Check official MOJ guidance for the current list.

Point Deductions — Up to -80 Points

Deductions can disqualify even high-scoring applicants. They are cumulative.

Infraction Points Deducted
Immigration violation: fine of ₩3M+ or departure order -30
Immigration violation: fine of ₩1M to < ₩3M -20
Immigration violation: fine of ₩500K to < ₩1M -10
Criminal record: penalty exceeding ₩3M -40
Criminal record: fine of ₩2M to < ₩3M -30
Criminal record: fine below ₩2M -20
Family misconduct: violation by sponsored spouse or children -10

Traffic violations, late address reporting fines, and minor employment regulation infractions can all trigger immigration violation deductions. An applicant who scores 95 points but received a ₩1.2M immigration fine will sit at 75 — below the threshold.

Bridging a Points Gap

The most common shortfall is landing at 76–79 points — close but not qualifying. The fastest reliable paths to close a small gap:

KIIP Level 5 completion. If you are already at KIIP Level 4 or can test into Level 5, completing the 70-hour course and passing the Comprehensive Evaluation adds 10 points. This is the single most accessible bonus for most professionals.

Volunteer work. Three years of documented service adds 7 points. This requires advance planning — you cannot retroactively create a volunteer record shortly before applying.

Ensure all income is taxed correctly. If bonuses or allowances are paid outside the formal payroll, they will not appear on your income certificate. Work with your employer to include all compensation in your declared income before your target application year.

Wait for the right income bracket. If you are ₩2M below the next income threshold (e.g., earning ₩48M when ₩50M earns 5 more points), a salary negotiation or bonus timing decision can shift your category.
