Netherlands Partner Visa Processing Time: What to Expect in 2026

The most common question in every Netherlands partner visa forum, every week, from everyone: how long is this going to take? The honest answer is that the official answer and the real-world experience often differ considerably. Understanding both — and what you can do to stay at the faster end of the range — is what this post covers.

The Official Position: 90 Days

The IND has a statutory decision period of 90 calendar days from the date it accepts a TEV application as complete. This is the legal maximum under Dutch administrative law. If the IND fails to decide within 90 days, the sponsor can invoke a "dwangsom" (penalty payment) procedure, where the IND pays the sponsor a daily fine for each day of delay beyond the deadline.

"Complete" is the key word. The 90-day clock only starts when the IND has everything it needs to begin assessing the application. If the IND requests additional documents at any point — an income statement, a missing apostille, a corrected form — the clock pauses until those documents are received. A well-prepared, complete application therefore has the maximum possible time in the IND's hands.

What the Real-World Timeline Looks Like

Community reports from 2025 and early 2026 show a wide range of actual processing times for partner visa applications:

• Fastest straightforward cases: 4–6 weeks from submission to approval
• Average for well-prepared applications: 6–12 weeks
• Cases with document requests: 12–20 weeks total (including the pause while documents are provided)
• Complex or disputed cases: Up to the full 90 days or slightly beyond

The IND's own annual report for 2025 stated that between 80% and 100% of regular family applications were decided within statutory time limits. This is a broad statement — it tells you the IND mostly meets the 90-day standard, but not where within that 90 days most decisions land.

Factors That Affect How Long Your Application Takes

Completeness of submission. The single biggest variable. Applications submitted with every document in order — legalised, translated, correct IND forms — tend to move fastest. Applications that trigger a document request add weeks to the timeline because the clock pauses.

Income profile complexity. Standard salaried employment with a clear payslip and a permanent contract is the easiest income assessment. Freelancers, those with multiple income sources, or those who recently changed employers require more scrutiny.

Relationship evidence quality. For married couples with a clean marriage certificate, the relationship assessment is usually brief. For unmarried partners or couples who have spent most of their relationship in different countries, the IND may spend more time reviewing the relationship questionnaire and supporting evidence.

IND workload. The IND's capacity fluctuates. Seasonal peaks — applications submitted after summer or winter holiday visits — mean more applications arriving simultaneously. Hiring and staffing within the IND also affects throughput.

The Role of the Civic Integration Exam in Your Timeline

The partner visa timeline does not begin with the TEV submission — it begins with passing the civic integration exam abroad (Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland). For most non-EU applicants, this exam is the rate-limiting step.

Booking the exam takes time (embassy availability varies widely). Preparing for it takes 3–6 months for most people starting from zero Dutch. This means the realistic total timeline from "we have decided to apply" to "approved and living in the Netherlands" is often 6–18 months, with the exam as the longest variable.

If you are exempt from the exam (US, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.), the timeline shortens considerably. In these cases, the total time from application submission to arrival is often 2–4 months.

After Approval: The MVV Collection and Travel Window

Once the IND approves the TEV application, they notify the relevant Dutch embassy. The embassy then contacts the applicant to schedule an appointment to collect the MVV sticker. This appointment typically happens within 2–4 weeks of the IND decision.

After collecting the MVV, you have 90 days to enter the Netherlands. Do not let this window expire — if you miss it, you need to request a new MVV, which involves another IND assessment. Book flights as soon as you have the MVV.

Checking the Status of Your Application

The IND portal (mijn.ind.nl) shows the status of active applications. However, status updates in the portal are often infrequent during the review period — many applications stay in "in progress" status for weeks with no movement.

If you have passed the 12-week mark from submission with no decision and no document request, your sponsor can contact the IND by phone to request a status update. This will not speed up the decision, but it can clarify whether the application is still in regular processing or whether there is a specific issue holding it.

What Happens If the 90 Days Expire Without a Decision

If the IND has not issued a decision by day 91, the sponsor can initiate an "ingebrekestelling" (notice of default) — a formal letter notifying the IND it is in breach of its statutory deadline. After receipt of this notice, the IND has two more weeks to decide. If no decision follows within those two weeks, the penalty payment (dwangsom) accrues: €100 per day for the first 14 days, €200 per day for the next 14 days, and €300 per day thereafter, up to a maximum of €15,000.

The dwangsom procedure is a legal right, not a confrontation. Using it when appropriate is reasonable, and it has been effective in practice at prompting IND decisions.
