PTE Score Required for Canada PR: PTE Core CLB Mapping

If you are applying for Canadian Permanent Residency through Express Entry and you have been preparing for PTE Academic, stop and read this first. There is a critical distinction between PTE Academic and PTE Core that IRCC is strict about — and submitting the wrong test will result in your application being rejected regardless of your score.

PTE Core vs PTE Academic: Which One Does Canada Want?

Canada's Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires PTE Core for all economic immigration streams leading to Permanent Residency — including Express Entry programs (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades) and most Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

PTE Academic is accepted for Canadian study permits only, specifically the Student Direct Stream (SDS) which requires an overall score of 60 in PTE Academic.

PTE Academic and PTE Core are not interchangeable for Canadian PR. They use the same underlying AI scoring technology and the same 10-to-90 scale, but they test different content: PTE Academic uses academic and formal content; PTE Core uses everyday workplace and practical scenarios. Applicants must sit for the specific version relevant to their immigration goal.

How PTE Core Scores Map to CLB Levels

IRCC uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) framework to evaluate English proficiency. PTE Core scores are automatically converted to CLB levels in the IRCC portal when you enter your Test Report Form (TRF) number.

Here is the full CLB mapping for PTE Core:

CLB 7 is the typical minimum for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility. CLB 9 is the target for many Express Entry candidates because it maximizes the English proficiency points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

CRS points from language:

• CLB 10 in all four skills: maximum language points
• CLB 9 in all four skills: high language score, competitive for most draws
• CLB 7 or 8: adequate for eligibility but lower language CRS contribution

Because CRS scores determine who receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA), your language score directly affects how quickly you get invited. The difference between CLB 9 and CLB 10 in all skills can be 10 to 20 CRS points — potentially the margin between receiving an invitation in the next draw or waiting another six months.

Component-Level Strategy for Canada PR Applicants

The CLB 7 requirement across all four components is the minimum threshold. Many candidates focus on achieving overall scores above a certain level without checking each component individually — and miss eligibility because one weak component falls below CLB 7.

Check each component against the mapping table above. If your Listening is 82 (CLB 9) but your Writing is 65 (CLB 7), you meet the minimum but your Writing is pulling down your language CRS score. Targeted Writing improvement — particularly Write from Dictation, which contributes significantly to Writing — is worth the preparation investment.

Differences in Task Format Between PTE Core and PTE Academic

If you have been studying PTE Academic materials and now know you need PTE Core, here is what changes:

Two tasks that appear in PTE Core but not PTE Academic:

• Respond to a Situation (Speaking): You are given a scenario and must respond appropriately. The vocabulary is conversational and workplace-focused rather than academic.
• Write Email (Writing): You write a formal or informal email in response to a situation. Tone and register are evaluated.

Two tasks in PTE Academic that do not appear in PTE Core:

• Retell Lecture
• Summarize Group Discussion

The underlying fluency, pronunciation, and written accuracy skills transfer between the two tests. The task formats require some specific preparation. If you have been preparing for PTE Academic and need to switch to PTE Core, budget 2 to 3 weeks to learn the Core-specific task types and adjust your templates.

The scoring AI is the same. The oral fluency strategies, connected speech techniques, and written accuracy habits that work in PTE Academic work in PTE Core.

Using PTE Academic for the Canadian Study Permit (SDS)

If your immediate goal is a Canadian study permit via the Student Direct Stream, PTE Academic is the accepted test. The SDS requirement is an overall score of 60 — equivalent to roughly IELTS 6.5. This is achievable for most candidates with 6 to 8 weeks of focused preparation.

Note that while a score of 60 satisfies the SDS English requirement, your target university may have additional requirements for program admission. Check the institution's specific language requirement separately from the study permit requirement.

What About PTE Academic for Express Entry?

PTE Academic scores are not converted to CLB by IRCC and cannot be submitted for Express Entry PR applications. If you have an existing PTE Academic score you were hoping to use for Canadian PR, you will need to sit for PTE Core separately.

There is no way around this. IRCC's language assessment system for economic immigration is calibrated to CLB, and only IELTS General Training, CELPIP, and PTE Core feed into that framework.
