PTE Core for Express Entry: Is It Better Than IELTS for Pakistani Applicants?

IRCC started accepting PTE Core for Express Entry applications in late 2023. Since then, a growing number of Pakistani applicants have switched from IELTS — mainly because of PTE Core's AI-driven scoring, which removes the subjectivity of human-graded Speaking and Writing assessments. Whether it is the right choice for you depends on your specific scoring history and where you are losing points.

What PTE Core Is (and Is Not)

PTE Core is not the same as PTE Academic. PTE Academic is the original Pearson test used for Australian student visas and some UK routes. PTE Core was specifically designed for Canadian immigration and uses a different format and scoring model.

Both tests are computer-based and AI-scored, but PTE Core is shorter (about 2 hours), scores on a scale of 10 to 90, and maps directly to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. IRCC accepts PTE Core scores for Express Entry — Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades Programs.

PTE Core Score to CLB Conversion

This is the most important table for Express Entry purposes:

For Express Entry purposes, each of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored separately, and each maps to a CLB level. Your overall language score for CRS purposes uses the CLB per section, not an average.

The CLB 9 target: For FSWP eligibility and for unlocking skill transferability points (worth 50+ CRS points), the target is CLB 9 in each section. In PTE Core terms, that means scoring at least 60 in all four sections.

How PTE Core Is Available in Pakistan

PTE Core is available at certified centers in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. The main testing provider in Pakistan is JnS Education, with centers in all three cities. The exam fee is standardized at approximately $275 USD, which converts to roughly 77,000 to 86,000 PKR depending on the current exchange rate.

Unlike IELTS, there is no "paper-based" option — PTE Core is entirely computer-based. Results are typically released within five business days, sometimes sooner. The computer-based format also means you get more frequent test dates with less competition for slots.

One relevant comparison: IELTS fees in Pakistan range from 68,500 to 72,000 PKR depending on city and provider. PTE Core is meaningfully more expensive at current exchange rates. That said, PTE Core's One Skill Retake policy (not currently available in Pakistan) means less financial penalty for falling short in a single section — though in Pakistan you would need to retake the full exam regardless.

When PTE Core Tends to Work Better Than IELTS

If you score well on Writing but struggle with IELTS Writing: IELTS Writing is human-graded, and Pakistani test-takers report significant variance in scores — particularly in Task 1 (report/letter writing). PTE Core Writing is AI-graded and rewards specific linguistic patterns consistently. If you have been scoring IELTS Writing at 6.0 to 6.5 and have tried multiple times without improvement, the grading difference may help.

If IELTS Speaking is your blocker: IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a human examiner. PTE Core Speaking is done into a microphone, AI-graded, and happens at a computer. Some Pakistani applicants find the human interview format more stressful and perform better without that dynamic. The AI scoring also does not penalize accents — it evaluates phonological accuracy and fluency metrics, which can be an advantage.

If you need results quickly: PTE Core typically returns scores in three to five days. IELTS results take 3 to 13 days depending on the format (computer vs. paper). For applicants managing tight post-ITA timelines (60 days to submit after receiving an Invitation to Apply), PTE Core's faster turnaround can matter.

When IELTS Might Still Make More Sense

If you are already scoring CLB 9+ on IELTS: There is no material advantage to switching. Stick with what is working.

If you need One Skill Retake: IDP Pakistan currently offers the IELTS One Skill Retake for about 45,300 PKR, letting you retake only the section where you underperformed. PTE Core does not offer this in Pakistan, so a substandard score in one section requires paying for the full test again.

If preparation resources are your constraint: IELTS preparation materials are vastly more available in Pakistan than PTE Core materials. Coaching centers across Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad offer structured IELTS courses from 15,000 to 40,000 PKR. PTE Core preparation materials are improving, but local coaching is significantly thinner.

The CLB 9 Requirement: Why It Matters More Than the Test Format

The underlying goal — CLB 9 in all four sections — is the same regardless of whether you use IELTS or PTE Core. CLB 9 triggers:

1. Skill transferability points: If you have a Bachelor's degree (or higher) and achieve CLB 9, you gain 50 additional CRS points from the skill transferability factor. This is one of the largest single boosts available to FSWP applicants without Canadian work experience.

2. Strong language factor points: A CLB 9 in the first official language scores 136 CRS points for a single applicant (versus 122 for CLB 8). The 14-point difference at this level is meaningful.

The mechanism for achieving CLB 9 matters less than actually achieving it. Choose the test where your skills and your preparation resources give you the best probability of hitting 60 in all four PTE Core sections, or 8.0 Listening / 7.0 Reading / 7.0 Writing / 7.0 Speaking on IELTS.
