PTE Core for Canada Express Entry — Is It Better Than IELTS for Bangladeshi Applicants?
PTE Core became an accepted English language test for Canada Express Entry relatively recently, and it has changed the calculation for applicants who have struggled to reach the CLB 9 threshold on IELTS. If you have sat IELTS multiple times and find the Speaking or Writing examiner assessment unpredictable, PTE Core is worth serious consideration — particularly because its scoring is entirely computer-based.
This post covers what you need to know about PTE Core specifically for Canada Express Entry, how the test compares to IELTS for Bangladeshi applicants, and where you can take it in Dhaka.
What PTE Core Is (and Is Not)
PTE Core is a different product from PTE Academic. They are not interchangeable for immigration purposes.
- PTE Core — accepted for Canada Express Entry, permanent residency, and citizenship applications with IRCC.
- PTE Academic — used for Australian immigration (189, 190, 190 visas) and university admissions. Not accepted by IRCC for Express Entry.
Make sure you are registering for PTE Core, not PTE Academic, when booking for Canadian immigration purposes.
PTE Core Score Requirements for Express Entry
Like IELTS, PTE Core scores map to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The CLB 9 threshold — the level that triggers the largest CRS point bonuses — requires:
| CLB Level | PTE Core Listening | PTE Core Reading | PTE Core Writing | PTE Core Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 9 | 72 | 60 | 69 | 68 |
| CLB 10 | 82 | 78 | 79 | 79 |
| CLB 7 | 39 | 33 | 41 | 36 |
The PTE Core uses a 10–90 point scale for each communicative skill. Unlike IELTS bands, the scores are granular — a 68 vs. a 67 in Speaking can mean the difference between CLB 9 and CLB 8.
The Key Advantage: Computer-Based Scoring
The most significant reason Bangladeshi applicants choose PTE Core over IELTS is the absence of human examiner judgment in Speaking and Writing. Both are scored algorithmically by Pearson's scoring engine.
For applicants who feel their accent, vocabulary range, or essay style is judged inconsistently by IELTS examiners — a common frustration cited in Bangladeshi immigration communities — PTE Core's automated scoring removes that variable. The algorithm grades against defined rubrics without the inter-rater variability that affects IELTS Speaking in particular.
This does not mean PTE Core is easier. The Speaking component has a different format — you read text aloud, describe images, and answer short-answer questions — and requires different preparation than the IELTS Speaking interview. But if your issue with IELTS is specifically the examiner feedback unpredictability, PTE Core is a meaningful alternative.

Test Centers in Dhaka
PTE Core testing in Dhaka is available at several authorized Pearson Vue test centers:
- Daffodil International University (Dhanmondi) — one of the most accessible test centers for candidates in central Dhaka.
- TUV SUD Bangladesh (various locations) — regularly listed as a PTE Vue center with frequent available slots.
Test center availability and slot frequency changes over time. Book through the official Pearson PTE website and check Dhaka locations directly — some centers book out several weeks in advance, particularly before popular immigration application seasons.
The test fee is approximately BDT 24,800 to 28,000, depending on current exchange rates. This is comparable to IELTS General Training fees.
Results are available within 5 business days, faster than paper-based IELTS and similar to computer-delivered IELTS.
Which Test Should You Choose
There is no universal answer — it depends on your strengths and your failure patterns with IELTS.
Choose IELTS if:
- You have not yet taken any language test and want to start with the most familiar format
- You are already at CLB 8 and need to push to CLB 9 — the One Skill Retake option (available for IELTS) lets you retake one failing module without redoing the whole test
- You perform well in interview-style Speaking contexts
Choose PTE Core if:
- You have taken IELTS 2+ times and remain stuck at CLB 8 despite preparation
- You believe your IELTS Speaking scores do not reflect your actual English ability
- You prefer a structured, algorithm-scored environment over examiner assessment
- You want faster results
Some candidates take both tests and submit the better result to their Express Entry profile. IRCC accepts either, and you can update your profile with a new test result at any time before receiving an ITA.
The language test decision is one part of a broader CRS strategy that includes your education score, work experience, and provincial nomination options. The Bangladesh to Canada Express Entry Guide walks through how to structure your profile to maximize your CRS score across all factors — not just the language component.
