PTE Core vs IELTS for Canada Express Entry: A Bangladeshi Applicant's Comparison

IELTS has been the default English language test for Canadian immigration for years. PTE Core, introduced as an IRCC-accepted test, has changed that for many applicants — particularly those who struggle with the IELTS Speaking module. For Bangladeshi Express Entry candidates, the choice between them is not about which test is easier in the abstract. It is about which one plays to your specific strengths.

How Both Tests Map to CLB Levels

Both IELTS General Training and PTE Core are accepted by IRCC and convert to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels through the same framework. The CLB level you achieve — not the raw test score — is what determines your CRS points.

CLB 9 is the target that maximizes skill transferability points. For IELTS, CLB 9 requires Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0. For PTE Core, CLB 9 requires Listening 72, Reading 60, Writing 69, Speaking 72 (using the PTE score scale of 10 to 90).

You choose one test to submit with your Express Entry profile — you cannot combine bands from different tests. Your best individual scores across multiple sittings of the same test can be combined, but IRCC does not allow mixing an IELTS Listening score with a PTE Core Writing score.

The Core Difference: Human vs. Algorithmic Scoring

The fundamental distinction between IELTS and PTE Core is who scores your Speaking and Writing responses.

IELTS Speaking is assessed by a trained human examiner in a face-to-face interview setting. The examiner follows a structured format but has discretion within that structure. Candidates who rely on memorized answers or formulaic responses often receive lower scores because examiners probe beyond scripted responses. For candidates with genuine conversational fluency in English, the human interaction can be positive — a good Speaking test is a conversation.

PTE Core Speaking is scored algorithmically. You speak to a microphone, and software evaluates your oral fluency, pronunciation, and content. There is no human interaction. Candidates who experience significant anxiety in face-to-face speaking situations often find the PTE Core format more manageable.

PTE Core Writing is also algorithmically scored. Responses are evaluated for grammar, vocabulary range, and content relevance by software. IELTS Writing is scored by human examiners who can weigh cohesion, coherence, and argument quality in ways that algorithms cannot fully replicate.

Which Test Bangladeshi Applicants Tend to Find Easier

Based on patterns reported in Bangladeshi immigration communities, candidates tend to perform better on PTE Core Speaking when their challenge with IELTS Speaking is exam anxiety rather than actual language ability. The computer-mediated format removes the social pressure of speaking to a stranger in an institutional setting.

IELTS Reading tends to produce higher CLB levels for many Bangladeshi candidates compared to PTE Core Reading, because IELTS Reading passages are longer and test comprehension skills that academic reading experience develops well. Candidates who read extensively in English — common among Bangladeshi IT and engineering graduates — often score above their expected level on IELTS Reading.

No consistent pattern shows that one test is categorically better for Bangladeshi applicants. The right test depends on where your individual score weaknesses lie.

Test Centers and Fees in Dhaka

IELTS General Training is offered through the British Council and IDP in Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet. The current fee is approximately BDT 28,450. Test dates are available multiple times per month, with the British Council and IDP offering different scheduling options.

PTE Core is offered through Pearson at authorized test centers in Dhaka. Currently, Daffodil International University and TUV SUD Bangladesh are primary locations, with some additional centers in Uttara and Dhanmondi. PTE Core fees range from approximately BDT 24,800 to 28,000 depending on the center and date. PTE Core test dates are also available multiple times monthly, and the scheduling process is online with quick confirmation.

Both tests have similar total costs per sitting. The fee difference between them is not large enough to be the deciding factor.

How to Decide Which Test to Take

If you have taken IELTS before and know which band you struggle with, that history is your most useful input.

If your IELTS result shows Speaking as your consistent weak point and your other three bands are above CLB 9, try PTE Core Speaking specifically in practice materials. If the computer-mediated format feels more comfortable, switch to PTE Core.

If your IELTS result shows Writing as the weak point and your other bands are strong, consider whether the algorithmic scoring of PTE Core Writing works for or against you — practice tests for PTE Core Writing are available free through Pearson's website and will give you a realistic benchmark.

If you have not taken either test, taking a free official practice test for both (both Pearson and IELTS offer free sample materials) gives you a starting point. Score yourself against the CLB conversion table to estimate where your CLB level would land.

Starting with IELTS is reasonable for most candidates because the preparation material is more abundant in Dhaka and coaching centers have deeper experience with the IELTS format. If after one or two IELTS sittings you are still not reaching CLB 9 in a specific band, switching to PTE Core for that skill area (which means switching to PTE Core entirely) is a legitimate strategy.

Test Validity and Timing

Both IELTS and PTE Core results are valid for two years from the test date. You must submit your Express Entry application with a test result that will remain valid for the duration of your IRCC processing — if you submit your application 18 months after your test and processing takes another year, your result may expire before a final decision. For Bangladeshi applicants who may face extended processing, timing the test to ensure the result remains valid through the decision is a practical consideration.

If your result expires while your application is in process, you will need to retest and submit new results to IRCC. This is manageable but adds administration.

The decision between PTE Core and IELTS is genuinely individual. Both are accepted, both produce CLB level outcomes, and both have test centers in Dhaka. Choose the one that plays to your strengths based on practice test experience, not based on which one you have heard more applicants talk about.
