UAE Golden Visa for Students: GPA Requirements and How to Apply

UAE Golden Visa for Students: GPA Requirements and How to Apply

The UAE Golden Visa for students is not a scholarship and it is not tied to continuing enrollment. It is a 5- or 10-year self-sponsored residency visa for high academic achievers — either high school graduates, current university students, or recent graduates — who meet specific grade thresholds. If you qualify, you get the same long-term, employer-independent residency that professionals and investors receive, based purely on academic performance.

Here is exactly who qualifies and how the process works.

Two Student Tracks

Track 1 — UAE Residents (High School and University)

This track covers individuals who are currently studying or have recently graduated from institutions within the UAE.

High school graduates: You qualify if you graduated from a UAE-accredited high school with a grade of 95% or above. This applies to the UAE's secondary school leaving examination or equivalent accredited qualifications assessed under the UAE education framework.

University students and graduates: Current students or recent graduates of a UAE-accredited university qualify with a minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 (or the equivalent under the university's grading scale). The institution must be accredited by the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) or an equivalent recognized body.

The UAE student pathway grants a 10-year visa for high school graduates meeting the threshold. University graduates from UAE institutions may receive a 5- or 10-year visa depending on the specific circumstances.

Track 2 — International Graduates (Top World Universities)

This track is for individuals who graduated from highly ranked international universities and want to apply for the Golden Visa within two years of graduation.

Requirements:

  • Degree from a university ranked in the world's top 100 by an officially recognized ranking (QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education, or Academic Ranking of World Universities are commonly referenced)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 (or equivalent)
  • Application submitted within two years of the graduation date

This two-year window is a firm cutoff. Graduates who are more than two years out from their graduation date cannot apply under the student pathway — they would need to qualify through another category, such as the skilled professional route.

The visa duration for international graduates varies: typically 5 years, with potential for 10 years depending on the degree level and rank of the institution.

What the Student Golden Visa Actually Provides

Many students apply through their parents' Golden Visa as dependents. The student pathway is distinct — it is your own independent Golden Visa, not a dependent sponsorship.

This matters for several reasons:

Independence from parents: If you are sponsored as a dependent on a parent's Golden Visa, your status is tied to theirs. If they leave the UAE or lose their visa, yours is affected. Your own student Golden Visa is self-sponsored and survives independently.

Working rights: A Golden Visa holder can work for any employer without that employer needing to sponsor a separate work visa. This is particularly valuable for new graduates entering the UAE job market.

6-month absence rule: Unlike a standard visit or student visa, a Golden Visa is not cancelled if you spend extended time outside the UAE. This matters for graduates doing internships abroad, postgraduate study in other countries, or family travel.

Emirates ID validity: You receive a 10-year Emirates ID (or 5-year depending on your specific visa duration), which simplifies banking, leasing, and other administrative processes.

Documents Required

For the UAE student pathway, the core documents are:

  • Passport (minimum 6 months remaining validity)
  • UAE residency visa (existing visa to convert, or entry permit if applying from outside UAE)
  • Original academic certificate (degree scroll or high school leaving certificate)
  • Official transcript showing GPA
  • Attestation of the certificate if from an international institution (for the international graduates track — the four-stage MOFA attestation chain applies)
  • Proof of graduation date (for the within-two-years check for international graduates)
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Valid UAE health insurance

For UAE residents applying under the high school or university track, the attestation chain is simpler because the institution is already within the UAE system. For international graduates, the full MOFA attestation process applies.

Applying While Outside the UAE

If you are a recent international graduate currently living outside the UAE, you apply for a 6-month multiple-entry entry permit first. This allows you to enter the UAE, complete the medical test and biometric enrollment, and then convert the entry permit to the full 10-year Golden Visa. The entry permit application is submitted through the ICP Smart Services portal online.

After Graduation — The Two-Year Clock

For international graduates, the most important practical consideration is timing. The two-year window runs from your graduation date, not from when you received your degree certificate or when you completed your final semester. Start your application before the window closes. The MOFA attestation process alone can take 3 to 8 weeks depending on your nationality, and MOE equivalency processing (if required) adds additional time.

If you are in your final year of university at a top-ranked institution, begin gathering documents and understanding the attestation requirements before you graduate. Do not wait until you have your physical degree scroll in hand.

The student pathway is one of six Golden Visa categories. The UAE Golden Visa Guide covers all of them, including the full attestation process for international graduates, how to submit through ICP, and what to do if your application is rejected.
