Accountant Australia Visa From Kenya: CPA Australia and ICPAK Pathway

Accountant Australia Visa From Kenya: CPA Australia and ICPAK Pathway

Accounting is one of the most challenging occupations in Australian skilled migration — not because the pathway doesn't exist, but because the points thresholds are among the highest of any profession. In recent invitation rounds, accountants have needed 95–100 points to receive a Subclass 189 invitation. Even with state nomination adding 5 points, the bar is demanding.

For Kenyan accountants, there is a genuine structural advantage: a Member Pathway Agreement (MPA) between the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and CPA Australia. This agreement creates a streamlined route from ICPAK membership to CPA Australia recognition — and by extension, to a valid skills assessment for Australian migration. Understanding how this agreement works is the starting point for any Kenyan accountant planning to migrate.

CPA Australia as the Assessing Authority

CPA Australia is the recognised assessing authority for accounting occupations in the Australian skilled migration system. The ANZSCO codes covered include:

Occupation ANZSCO Code Visa Eligibility
Accountant (General) 221111 190, 491 (STSOL)
Management Accountant 221112 190, 491 (STSOL)
Taxation Accountant 221113 190, 491 (STSOL)
External Auditor 221213 189, 190, 491 (MLTSSL)
Internal Auditor 221214 189, 190, 491 (MLTSSL)

Note the distinction: general accounting roles (221111–221113) are on the STSOL — state or regional nomination is required, the 189 independent visa is not available. External Auditor and Internal Auditor are on the MLTSSL and eligible for the 189.

For most Kenyan accountants working in commercial or management accounting, this means state nomination (190 or 491) is the primary pathway.

The ICPAK to CPA Australia Member Pathway Agreement

The MPA between ICPAK and CPA Australia provides full ICPAK members with a pathway to CPA Australia membership and skills assessment recognition. The agreement's key terms:

Eligibility requirements:

  • Hold a university degree recognised as equivalent to an Australian Bachelor's degree
  • Be a full member of ICPAK admitted through the standard examination pathway (not through experience exemptions alone)
  • Be in good standing with ICPAK (no outstanding disciplinary matters)

What the MPA provides:

  • Exemptions from certain CPA Australia program subjects based on your ICPAK qualifications
  • A recognised pathway to CPA Australia membership for purposes of skills assessment

What you still need to demonstrate: For migration assessment purposes, CPA Australia assesses whether your academic qualifications cover 9 of 12 core knowledge areas in their framework. These include areas like Audit and Assurance, Business Law, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, and — critically — areas that don't directly correspond to Kenyan accounting education, such as Australian Taxation Law.

If your Kenyan degree doesn't cover all required knowledge areas (most don't cover Australian taxation law specifically), you may need to complete a bridging module through CPA Australia before receiving a positive migration assessment.

To achieve full CPA status in Australia (beyond just the migration assessment), you must complete the Ethics and Governance subject of the CPA Australia program. This is separate from the migration assessment and can be done after arrival in Australia.

Alternative for Non-ICPAK Accountants

If you're a qualified Kenyan accountant but not an ICPAK member, or if you qualified through the KASNEB CPA(K) route without ICPAK membership, you can still apply for a CPA Australia migration skills assessment through the standard academic pathway. This requires:

  • A degree assessed as equivalent to Australian Bachelor's level
  • Transcripts demonstrating coverage of the required accounting knowledge areas
  • Employment evidence showing relevant accounting work

CPA Australia's migration assessment fee as of late 2025 is approximately AUD 595. Processing times range from 8–12 weeks.

Points Reality for Kenyan Accountants

This is where Kenyan accountants need an honest assessment of their situation. Accounting sits in the 95–100 point competition range for the 189. Even with a 190 nomination (5 bonus points), competitive scores are in the 90–95 range for major states.

A 30-year-old Kenyan accountant with a bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience:

Factor Points
Age (25–32) 30
Bachelor's degree 15
Overseas experience (5 years) 10
Superior English (PTE 79+) 20
Subtotal 75
+ 190 nomination +5
Total 80

This is competitive in some states and rounds, but not the top tier needed for accounting in highly competitive rounds. To reach 90+, an accountant would need additional points from:

  • Australian study (5 points for an Australian qualification)
  • Skilled partner (up to 10 points if partner also has positive skills assessment and Superior English)
  • PhD (5 additional points over a Master's)
  • Specialist education in accounting (5 additional points for specific credentials)

The 491 regional visa changes the calculation more usefully. The 15-point regional bonus transforms 75 raw points into 90 — competitive for regional nomination in states and territories with accounting on their occupation lists. This is a realistic pathway for Kenyan accountants who are willing to spend three years in a regional area before transitioning to a capital city.

States With Accounting on Their Lists

Accounting is not universally prioritised — it depends on the state program year. Historically:

Western Australia: Has listed accounting occupations including Management Accountants and External Auditors. WA's offshore applicant policy makes it accessible from Nairobi.

South Australia: SA has listed accounting roles and tends to have lower internal competition compared to NSW or VIC. The commitment is to Adelaide.

Regional areas (ACT, NT, regional VIC, regional QLD): For 491 visa purposes, multiple regional areas consistently list accounting occupations. The Northern Territory, in particular, has ongoing accounting shortages.

Check the current state occupation lists at the time you submit your EOI — lists change annually and sometimes mid-year.

What Documents You Need

For the CPA Australia migration assessment:

  • Official academic transcripts from your Kenyan university (sent directly or certified)
  • Evidence of ICPAK membership and good standing (if using MPA route)
  • Employment reference letters covering your work history
  • Payslips or bank statements as financial evidence of employment

For the visa application:

  • CPA Australia positive assessment letter
  • PTE or IELTS result
  • DCI Certificate of Good Conduct (eCitizen, KES 1,050)
  • IOM Nairobi health examination results (USD 185)
  • Passport and identity documents

Realistic Timeline for a Kenyan Accountant

Month 1–2: Initiate ICPAK good standing letter; request university transcripts; sit PTE Academic targeting 79+ overall (88 Speaking, 85 Writing under 2025 thresholds).

Month 2–4: Submit CPA Australia migration assessment with ICPAK MPA documentation.

Month 4–6: Receive CPA Australia assessment; submit EOI in SkillSelect.

Month 6–18: Wait for state nomination in appropriate occupation rounds. The wait is genuinely variable — accounting receives fewer nomination invitations than healthcare or engineering in many states.

Month 18–24: Visa lodgement and processing (accounting visas are not in the priority processing queue; standard times apply).

Accounting is a longer journey than nursing, where 65 points can be sufficient. But it is achievable — and the ICPAK-CPA Australia agreement genuinely reduces the friction compared to accountants from countries without an equivalent arrangement.
