Nigerian Accountant Migrating to Australia: CPA Skills Assessment Guide 2026

Nigerian accountants face a specific problem that other skilled migrants do not: their assessment outcome is almost guaranteed to be "provisional" on the first attempt, no matter how strong their qualifications are. This is not a failure. It is a known feature of the Australian accounting assessment system for Nigerian applicants, and understanding why it happens — and how to resolve it — is the difference between a fast pathway and a multi-year delay.

The Accounting Assessment Landscape

Three bodies assess accounting qualifications for Australian skilled migration:

  • CPA Australia — Most common pathway for Nigerian graduates
  • Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) — Alternative to CPA Australia
  • Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) — Accepted but less commonly used

The occupations that qualify are on the MLTSSL, meaning all three visa subclasses (189, 190, 491) are accessible:

  • Accountant General (221111)
  • Management Accountant (221112)
  • Taxation Accountant (221113)
  • External Auditor (221213)

CPA Australia charges AUD 545 to AUD 600 for the assessment. Processing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks — faster than ACS or Engineers Australia.

Why Nigerian Applicants Almost Always Get a Provisional Outcome

CPA Australia evaluates your degree against 12 core knowledge areas. Nigerian Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Commerce degrees in Accounting cover most of them well:

  • Financial Accounting and Reporting: typically fully covered
  • Management Accounting: typically fully covered
  • Audit and Assurance: typically fully covered
  • Accounting Systems and Processes: typically covered

The two areas that produce gaps for virtually every Nigerian applicant:

Australian Taxation Law — Your degree covered Nigerian tax law. Australian taxation (GST, capital gains tax, fringe benefits tax, Division 7A) was not in your curriculum. CPA Australia will flag this as a gap in every case.

Australian Business Law — You studied Nigerian commercial and company law. Australian contract law, the Corporations Act, consumer protection under the Australian Consumer Law — these are different statutory frameworks.

CPA Australia issues a "provisional" outcome when it identifies these gaps. The provisional outcome still allows you to:

  • Proceed with your EOI submission and state nomination application
  • Lodge a visa application
  • Obtain your visa grant

What it does not allow is indefinite delay on resolving the gaps. The Department of Home Affairs expects the gaps to be closed at an approved Australian institution within a defined period after visa grant.

Resolving the Gap: Approved Pathways

You have three main options for completing the missing subjects:

CPA Australia's own bridging subjects — CPA Australia offers specific foundation exams that satisfy the gap subjects. The taxation and business law modules can be completed online. This is the most direct path and does not require physically attending an Australian institution.

Online providers with AQF recognition — Several Australian universities offer individual subjects online at the certificate or diploma level. These include open universities and online campuses of established institutions. The subjects must be at AQF Level 7 (bachelor level) or above.

Post-arrival study at an Australian institution — Completing the relevant subjects at an Australian university after your visa is granted. This is the most expensive option in terms of time and fees but also fulfills the 2-year Australian study requirement that attracts 5 bonus migration points if done before your next visa stage.

ICAN Membership: What It Actually Does for Australian Migration

ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) fellowship or associate membership demonstrates professional standing, but it does not bypass the Australian skills assessment process. CPA Australia recognizes ICAN membership as evidence of professional credibility and may provide partial exemptions from certain CPA program segments after you arrive in Australia — but it does not substitute for the degree-level knowledge area assessment.

What ICAN membership does provide:

  • Confirms professional accounting standing in Nigeria
  • Reduces the time required to complete the full CPA Australia program after migration
  • May provide specific exam exemptions within the CPA program

What ICAN membership does not provide:

  • Waiver of the skills assessment requirement
  • Automatic positive assessment outcome
  • Exemption from the Australian Taxation or Business Law gaps

The Experience Points Calculation for Accountants

Unlike ACS, CPA Australia's skills assessment does not apply a specific year deduction in the same format. Once CPA Australia issues a positive (even provisional) assessment, you can claim work experience points based on your actual employment history in an accounting occupation.

The points calculation uses the standard skilled employment table:

  • 1 to 3 years: 5 points
  • 3 to 5 years: 10 points
  • 5 to 8 years: 15 points
  • 8+ years: 20 points

Nigerian accountants who have been practicing for 8 or more years qualify for the maximum 20 employment points — a better outcome than many IT professionals who face ACS deductions that reduce 8 years of experience to 6 for points purposes.

Reference Letter Requirements for CPA Australia

CPA Australia's employment reference requirements are similar to ACS:

  • Company letterhead with registered address
  • Signatory's contact details
  • Full employment dates by month
  • Job title
  • Duties described in accounting-specific terms: financial reporting under IFRS, management accounts preparation, tax compliance, audit procedures, etc.
  • Confirmation of employment type (permanent, contract, full-time equivalent)

The ICAN engagement letter (if you work in public practice) or the employer's letter (if in industry) serves the same function. Ensure the letter confirms that accounting was your primary function, not a secondary responsibility.

State Nomination for Nigerian Accountants

South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania regularly nominate accountants. Accountants are a consistently in-demand occupation across states because of shortages in regional areas and the growing complexity of compliance requirements for mid-sized businesses.

For offshore Nigerian accountants applying without prior Australian experience, South Australia's offshore stream is the most accessible route. Apply early in the state nomination window (typically July to September each year) and include evidence of genuine willingness to live in South Australia, not just as a stepping stone to Melbourne or Sydney.

The Full Picture for a Nigerian ICAN Member

If you are a Nigerian ICAN member, 28 years old, with 6 years of post-qualification accounting experience, your realistic points profile looks like:

  • Age 25-32: 30 points
  • Superior English (PTE 79): 20 points
  • 6 years skilled employment: 15 points
  • Bachelor's degree: 0
  • 491 regional nomination: 15 points
  • Total: 80 points

With a spouse who also has accounting qualifications and Competent English: 90 points — well inside invitation territory for both 190 and 491.

The provisional CPA assessment outcome is not an obstacle to reaching this point. It is a known part of the process for Nigerian-trained accountants.
