Move to New Zealand from India, South Africa, Philippines, and UK: What's Different for Each

Move to New Zealand from India, South Africa, Philippines, and UK: What's Different for Each

The Skilled Migrant Category has the same 6-point framework regardless of where you're from. But the path to those 6 points — and the practical hurdles along the way — differs significantly depending on your country of origin. Here's what applicants from the four largest source countries need to know that generic guides don't cover.

From India: NZQA Mapping and the Median Wage Bar

Indian professionals represent a significant and growing share of NZ skilled migration, particularly in IT, engineering, and healthcare. The main challenges are specific:

NZQA IQA is almost always required. Most Indian bachelor's degrees require an International Qualification Assessment before they can be used to claim SMC points. A standard 3-year bachelor's maps to NZQF Level 7 (3 points). A 4-year engineering degree (B.E. or B.Tech) typically also maps to Level 7 — not Level 8 as many applicants assume. If your IQA result comes back at Level 7, you need 3 years of NZ work experience to bridge to 6 points, not 1–2 years.

IIT exemptions are limited. NZQA has recognised some IIT programmes specifically, and some IIT degrees appear on the LQEA (List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment). But these are institution-specific and programme-specific — not all IIT graduates are automatically exempt. Check the LQEA database by institution and graduation year before assuming exemption.

The police certificate rule change matters for you. Since December 2025, INZ no longer accepts police certificates from local Indian police stations. You must obtain your certificate from a Regional Passport Office (RPO) via the Passport Seva portal. Build 4–6 weeks into your timeline for this.

Australia vs. New Zealand as alternatives. Many Indian IT professionals currently in Australia on temporary visas are using New Zealand as a strategic alternative after failing to receive an Australian 189 or 190 invitation. NZ's Green List Straight to Residence pathway for Software Engineers (ANZSCO 261313) is available if you earn at least $72.80/hr — roughly INR 55–60 lakh annually at current exchange rates, scaled to NZ wages. This is competitive but achievable for senior software professionals.

From South Africa: Recognition and the Safety Calculus

South Africans migrate to New Zealand primarily for safety and quality-of-life reasons, and they tend to be serious, committed applicants rather than explorers. The challenges are:

Degree recognition is generally smoother than for Indian applicants. South African universities (University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Wits, UP) have good NZQA standing, and many degrees appear on the LQEA. Confirm your specific degree — not just your university — is listed and check the year range.

Engineering registration matters more than most guides say. South African engineers who hold registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) can use that registration to claim occupational registration points under the SMC Pillar 1. However, New Zealand's Engineering NZ requires a separate assessment for CPEng status. If your ECSA degree is Washington Accord-accredited (most SA engineering programmes are), this process is relatively straightforward. If not, a Knowledge Assessment costing $1,425 is required.

Healthcare professionals from South Africa face specific documentation challenges. HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa) records are sometimes difficult to obtain in the timeframe required by NZ professional bodies. Start these requests early — 3–6 months before you plan to lodge your application.

The cultural transition. South African feedback on New Zealand immigration forums consistently raises the slower pace of professional life and lower salaries relative to South Africa's top earners. The median wage threshold ($35.00/hr, approximately ZAR 340,000–380,000 annually depending on exchange rates) is above what many mid-level South African professionals earn in South Africa, but most senior professionals meet it without difficulty in a NZ role.

Police clearance: South African Police Service (SAPS) clearance certificates are required and typically take 2–4 weeks to obtain.

From the Philippines: Nursing, the NCNZ Pathway, and the OSCE

The Philippines is the largest source country for New Zealand nurses, and the pathway is well-worn but not without obstacles:

English language exemption does not apply for Filipinos. Despite being educated largely in English, Filipino applicants are not automatically exempt from the English language test. INZ requires a test result unless you completed your entire primary, secondary, and tertiary education in an English-medium institution in an approved country. The Philippines is not on the approved country list. Plan for IELTS and target 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 for the SMC principal applicant requirement. Note: the NCNZ may require higher — check their specific English language requirements before testing.

NCNZ registration involves multiple steps. The Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) registration process for internationally qualified nurses requires:

  1. Credential verification through TruMerit (USD $380)
  2. An assessment of your nursing programme against NZ nursing standards
  3. In many cases, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) — approximately $3,000 for the exam and $500 for the orientation programme
  4. NCNZ application fee: $485 NZD

The OSCE requirement for Filipino nurses is not universal but is common. NCNZ determines this based on your training programme's alignment with NZ nursing competencies. Budget time and money for it.

Green List Tier 1 is your fastest path. Registered Nurses are on the Green List Tier 1 — Straight to Residence. Once you hold NCNZ registration and have an accredited employer offer, you can apply for a Resident Visa without a waiting period. This is faster than the SMC points accumulation route for most nurses.

Police clearance: Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance is the standard. Allow 2–3 weeks.

From the UK: The Easiest Administrative Path, the Hardest Cultural Adjustment

UK professionals face fewer administrative barriers to NZ immigration than almost any other nationality, but the reasons they often find the process frustrating are different:

English language exemption applies. UK passport holders are fully exempt from the English language test requirement for NZ immigration. No IELTS required.

Most UK degrees are on the LQEA. Major UK universities have comprehensive LQEA coverage. For most UK Bachelor's degrees, you can confirm the NZQF level from the LQEA database without paying for an IQA.

Professional registration recognition is generally strong. Engineering degrees from UK universities with Royal Academy of Engineering accreditation are Washington Accord-recognized, facilitating direct Engineering NZ assessment. UK GMC medical registration supports MCNZ applications. UK teachers holding QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) can apply for TCANZ provisional registration.

The job market challenge. Despite the administrative ease, UK professionals often find the offshore job search harder than expected. New Zealand employers prefer to hire locally or regionally, and a UK applicant without NZ work experience is competing against local candidates for roles that don't specifically require offshore recruitment. The most effective approach: target industries with well-documented shortages (construction, healthcare, secondary education in sciences), use Working In New Zealand and specialist recruitment agencies, and be prepared to arrive on a visitor visa and interview in person.

The trades route from the UK. UK tradespeople (electricians, plumbers, HVAC engineers) are in strong demand, and the Tier 2 Green List provides a clear pathway. UK City and Guilds or NVQ qualifications generally map well to NZ trade licensing requirements, though full NZ registration is still required before working. The Electrical Workers Registration Board and similar bodies have streamlined pathways for UK-trained applicants.

Police clearance: ACRO Criminal Records Office (UK) certificates are standard and quick — typically 2 weeks.

Regardless of your origin country, the same core strategy applies: confirm your ANZSCO classification early, resolve professional registration before chasing job offers, and don't lodge your residence application until all documents — including health results and police certificates — are in hand.

The New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category Guide includes country-specific chapters covering IQA expectations, professional registration pathways, and police clearance processes for applicants from India, South Africa, the Philippines, the UK, and several other major source countries.
