NZ Parent Visa EOI Ballot: How It Works and Your Selection Odds

The New Zealand Parent Resident Visa uses a randomized ballot system to manage demand against a fixed annual cap. If you are considering sponsoring your parents, understanding the mechanics and odds is essential for realistic planning.

How the Ballot Works

You submit an Expression of Interest (Form 1202) with a NZ$450 fee. At this stage, only a self-declaration of income, health, and family balance is required — no supporting documents. Your EOI enters a randomized pool with no priority based on income, nationality, waiting time, or any other factor.

Quarterly draws happen in February, May, August, and November — typically on the second Tuesday of the month. To be included in a draw, your EOI must be submitted by the end of the previous month.

Selection Data: 2024–2025

Draw EOIs Selected Individuals Covered ITAs Issued
February 2024 301 450 286
November 2024 400 609 374
February 2025 601 911 574
May 2025 400 607 381
August 2025 401 605 384
November 2025 400 620 384

INZ targets approximately 2,500 visa approvals per year, selecting enough EOIs per quarter to account for applications that are declined or withdrawn after selection.

What Are Your Odds?

With approximately 7,800+ EOIs in the pool and roughly 400 selected per draw, the probability of selection in any single quarter is approximately 5%.

Over the full two-year EOI validity (eight draws), the cumulative probability of being selected at least once is roughly 34%. That means about two-thirds of EOIs expire without selection.

The Two-Year Expiry

Your EOI remains valid for exactly two years from submission. If not selected within that period, it expires automatically. You can resubmit with a fresh NZ$450 fee to re-enter the pool.

Strategy: Submit your EOI as soon as you meet the eligibility criteria. Every quarter of delay is a lost draw in the lottery.

After Selection

If selected, INZ performs a brief checking process (approximately two weeks) to verify your declared eligibility. If confirmed, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) — a formal invitation to submit your full application with all supporting documents.

You have exactly four months from the ITA date to lodge the complete application. This deadline is strict — extensions are rarely granted.

The NZ Parent Resident Visa Guide covers the ballot strategy in detail, including the parallel Parent Boost Visitor Visa approach that lets your parents live in NZ while you wait for the lottery.
