How to Apply for a New Zealand Student Visa: Step-by-Step Guide for 2026

Getting your New Zealand student visa wrong doesn't mean a short delay — it often means months of reapplication, lost enrolment deposits, and deferred plans. The process is fully online, the financial standards are exact, and INZ assesses your genuine intent as rigorously as your documents. Here's how to do it correctly.

Before You Apply: What You Need in Place

You cannot submit a student visa application without an unconditional Offer of Place from an approved New Zealand education provider. Your institution must be on the NZQA register and must be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice.

Step 1: Calculate Your Financial Requirements

Step 4: Arrange Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory, not optional. International students on student visas have no access to publicly funded healthcare. You must maintain comprehensive coverage for your entire stay.

Most universities and tertiary providers offer pre-approved policies such as Studentsafe, billed alongside tuition fees. Annual premiums typically range from NZD 600 to NZD 900.

Step 5: Submit Online
