Does the UK Allow Dual Citizenship? Rules by Country
The UK's position on dual nationality is straightforward: the Home Office does not require you to renounce your existing citizenship when you naturalise as British. You can legally hold both. The complication is that your home country's law may not agree.
The UK Position: Dual Nationality Is Permitted
There is no provision in the British Nationality Act 1981 that bars you from retaining another nationality when you become British. The citizenship ceremony declaration does not ask you to renounce anything. The naturalisation certificate arrives without any condition about your existing nationality.
The 2026 rule change that matters here is a different one: under ETA enforcement introduced this year, dual nationals who hold British citizenship must use their British passport to enter the UK. Airlines are required to check this and can deny boarding if you present a foreign passport. This isn't about dual citizenship being restricted — it's about UK border control requiring you to travel as British once you are British.
Countries That Do Not Permit Their Nationals to Hold British Citizenship
India
India does not permit dual citizenship under the Citizenship Act 1955. If you naturalise as a British citizen, you automatically lose Indian citizenship at that moment. The standard route for Indian nationals is to immediately apply for an Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card, which restores most rights (property ownership, banking, long-term visa access, work rights) without restoring citizenship. OCI is a permanent status and the card is renewed with your passport. You cannot vote in Indian elections or hold public office on OCI.
China
China automatically cancels Chinese citizenship upon acquiring a foreign nationality. This is enforced differently in practice — mainland China does not formally issue "dual citizen" status and does not recognise your foreign naturalisation as affecting your Chinese citizenship if you acquired it by birth. In practice, Chinese nationals who naturalise British often travel on their British passport internationally and use their Chinese passport for China-only purposes, but this puts you in a legally ambiguous position. The Chinese government's practical enforcement varies.
Singapore
Singapore does not permit dual citizenship. The Singapore Citizenship Act requires you to renounce Singaporean citizenship within one year of acquiring foreign citizenship. If you naturalise British, you are expected to formally renounce. Failure to do so means Singapore may revoke your citizenship administratively.
UAE and Gulf States
UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman all prohibit dual citizenship. Acquiring British citizenship without renouncing Gulf citizenship would technically violate their nationality laws, though enforcement and practical implications vary. If you're a Gulf national considering naturalisation, get legal advice specific to your country — the rules are enforced inconsistently and the consequences of non-compliance differ.
Countries That Permit Dual Citizenship With the UK
Australia: Australia has permitted dual citizenship since 2002 with no restrictions. Australian nationals can naturalise British without renouncing anything.
Canada: Canada generally permits dual citizenship. Canadian nationals can naturalise British and hold both.
South Africa: South Africa's position is frequently misunderstood. South Africa technically prohibits dual citizenship under the South African Citizenship Act 1995 — if you acquire another nationality without prior ministerial permission, you may lose your South African citizenship automatically. However, enforcement has been inconsistent, and many South Africans hold British passports without having formally applied for permission. The risk exists, and if you are a South African national, you should check the current position with the South African Department of Home Affairs before naturalising. The formal route is to apply for permission to retain South African citizenship before naturalising British.
Nigeria: Nigeria prohibits dual citizenship for Nigerian nationals by birth if they acquire foreign citizenship by naturalisation. If you naturalise British, you technically lose Nigerian citizenship. In practice, enforcement is variable. If this matters to you, seek legal advice specific to your Nigerian status.
European Union countries: Most EU member states permit dual citizenship, though there are some exceptions. Germany, for example, introduced expanded dual citizenship rights in 2024 allowing more people to naturalise without renouncing. France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Ireland all permit dual citizenship with the UK.
Philippines: Generally allows dual citizenship through a separate "Dual Citizenship Act" reacquisition process.

What to Do If Your Home Country Prohibits Dual Citizenship
You have three options:
Proceed anyway and accept the consequences for your other nationality: Many people do this, particularly for countries with inconsistent enforcement. This is a personal risk calculation.
Renounce your existing citizenship before or after naturalising: Some people formally renounce their original citizenship as required by their home country's law.
Use the OCI route (India-specific): Apply for OCI immediately after naturalising British. This is the standard path for Indian nationals and preserves most practical benefits.
Delay naturalisation: If retaining your existing citizenship is currently more valuable (voting rights, property ownership, family law considerations), you may choose to remain on ILR rather than naturalise now.
The dual nationality question doesn't affect whether the Home Office will grant you British citizenship — the UK asks no questions about your home country's laws. It's purely a question of what happens on the other side of the equation.
The UK British Citizenship (Naturalisation) Guide includes a country-by-country dual citizenship table and covers the OCI application process for Indian nationals, which most naturalising Indians will need to go through immediately after their ceremony.
