ILR Documents Checklist 2026: What You Need for Each Route

A refused ILR application is expensive. The £3,226 fee is non-refundable. Most refusals on the Skilled Worker route stem not from genuine ineligibility but from document errors: missing payslips, an employer letter that lacks mandatory wording, or a bank statement that doesn't match the stated salary.

This checklist covers what you actually need — not just the official high-level list, but the specific document standards that matter.

Core Documents (All Routes)

Current passport — all data pages, not just the photo page. If you hold multiple passports, include all of them.

All previous passports used during your qualifying period — caseworkers need to verify travel history and prior visa stamps.

Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or eVisa reference — if you hold a BRP, you'll bring it to your UKVCAS biometrics appointment. If your status is already held digitally as an eVisa, you'll reference your UKVI account. Note: the UK is fully transitioning to eVisas; new grants since late 2024 are eVisa-only.

Life in the UK test pass certificate — or if you sat the test under a previous application, the same certificate remains valid. There's no expiry.

English language evidence — a UK degree certificate, an overseas degree verified by Ecctis, or an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate at the required level.

Passport-style photographs — two recent photographs meeting Home Office specifications.

Skilled Worker ILR (SET(O) Form)

Employer letter — this is where many applications fail. The letter must be on company letterhead and must explicitly state:

  • Your full name
  • Your job title and current SOC code
  • Your current annual salary and hourly rate
  • That you are still required in your role for the "foreseeable future"
  • The date you commenced employment

The phrase "required for the foreseeable future" is not optional boilerplate — its absence is a documented ground for refusal. If your HR department provides a generic reference letter, it is not sufficient.

Current payslip — your most recent payslip, dated within the last month.

P60s for the qualifying period — one P60 for each tax year during your 5-year qualifying period. These confirm continuous employment and consistent income.

Bank statements — typically the last 6 months, showing your salary credits. The amounts must match your payslips exactly. If you've changed accounts, include statements from both.

Certificate of Sponsorship reference number — from your current sponsorship, confirming you remain sponsored.

Decision letters for any previous visa applications or extensions during the qualifying period — to demonstrate a continuous, lawful immigration history.

Long Residence ILR (SET(LR) Form)

The 10-year Long Residence route has the most demanding evidence requirements. You're proving continuous lawful residence across an entire decade.

Every passport held in the last 10 years — including pages showing all visas and entry/exit stamps. If any passport was lost or damaged, you'll need to provide an explanation and supporting evidence.

Annual proof of address for each of the 10 years — utility bills, tenancy agreements, mortgage statements, or council tax bills. The Home Office expects at least one address document per year. Gaps require explanation.

Annual proof of employment or study — P60s, letters of employment, university enrollment confirmation, or other evidence showing your activity in the UK each year.

Chronological absence log — a complete record of every departure from and return to the UK, covering the full 10-year period. This must reconcile with Border Force records.

Visa decision letters and BRPs/eVisas for every leave grant during the 10-year period — to prove continuous lawful status without any gap.

Partner/Spouse ILR (SET(M) Form)

6 months' payslips and matching bank statements — for the sponsor (or applicant, if they are the employed party). Must demonstrate current income of at least £29,000 annually (or £18,600 for those protected under the pre-April 2024 transitional rules).

Cohabitation evidence — this is what distinguishes a successful SET(M) application from a refusal. Caseworkers look for at least six pieces of joint correspondence or individually-addressed mail at the shared address per 2-year period. Joint bank account statements, joint tenancy, joint utility bills, correspondence from GP, HMRC, or the council — all work. Mobile phone bills are given less weight.

Relationship timeline — a written statement by both partners confirming the relationship is genuine and subsisting. Some applicants include a brief timeline with photographs, though this is supplementary rather than mandatory.

Marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate (if applicable).

ILR Cover Letter

A cover letter is not technically mandatory, but it is strongly advisable for any application with complexity — a period spent abroad, a job change during the qualifying period, a gap between visas, or anything that might prompt a caseworker question.

A good cover letter:

  • States which route you're applying under and which form you've used
  • Lists every document included, in the order submitted
  • Flags and explains any potential issues proactively
  • Is dated and signed

A cover letter for a straightforward application can be one page. For long residence applications, it often runs to three or four pages.

BRP Cards and the eVisa Transition

If you still hold a physical BRP card, bring it to your biometrics appointment. Once ILR is granted, your status will be recorded as an eVisa — a digital record linked to your passport. You access and share it through a UKVI online account.

There is no longer a separate physical ILR card issued. Your eVisa is the proof of settled status, and you share it via a one-time code when employers, landlords, or border staff need to verify your status.

The UK ILR Settlement Guide contains full, route-specific checklists with the exact wording standards the Home Office expects, including a template for the Skilled Worker employer letter. If you're 6–12 months from your application date, the guide walks you through building each document file in advance so nothing is missing on submission day.
