Indian Nurse UK Visa: NMC Registration, NHS Application, and the 2026 Process

India is one of the UK's largest sources of internationally educated nurses, and unlike countries on the WHO Red List, India is on the Green List — meaning NHS Trusts and recruitment agencies can actively recruit there. This creates both more opportunity and more noise: more legitimate recruitment channels, but also more fraudulent operators who blend in.

This post covers the full process for Indian nurses, with specific attention to the paperwork challenges that delay the most applications.

The Regulatory Starting Point

Indian nursing degrees are recognized by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, but recognition alone doesn't grant registration. Indian nurses must complete the NMC's international registration process, which involves a language test, an initial application, a Computer Based Test, a job offer, a visa, and an OSCE in the UK. The total timeline from starting the process to receiving your NMC PIN typically runs six to eighteen months, depending primarily on how quickly your documents can be verified.

Document Verification: The Main Source of Delays

The NMC requires "direct verification" for key documents. This means certain documents must be sent directly from the issuing institution in India to the NMC in the UK — you cannot handle or forward them yourself, even if you have copies.

The most critical of these is the Certificate of Current Professional Status (CCPS) from the Indian Nursing Council or the State Nursing Council where you are registered. This document confirms your current standing as a registered nurse. It must be transmitted directly from the State Nursing Council to the NMC. Some State Councils are efficient; others have significant processing delays, and this single step often determines your overall timeline.

Similarly, your academic transcripts from your nursing college should ideally be sent directly from the institution to the NMC. Understand that some smaller nursing colleges in India may be slow to respond or may not have international verification experience — this is where many applications stall for months.

Prepare for this well in advance. Contact your State Nursing Council and your nursing college before you even sit your language test. Explain that you need direct verification documents sent to the NMC and ask for their current processing time and the correct contact details for international verification requests. Building this relationship early is one of the most impactful things you can do to compress your overall timeline.

Language Test Choice for Indian Nurses

Most Indian nurses have received English-medium education, and many work daily in environments where English is a functional language. Despite this, both IELTS Academic and OET trips up Indian candidates in specific areas.

The NMC requires IELTS 7.0 overall (minimum 6.5 in Writing) or OET grade B overall (grade C+ acceptable in Writing). The Writing component is where Indian nurses most frequently fall short, regardless of which test they sit. Academic IELTS Writing requires formal essay structure on unfamiliar topics. OET Writing requires a patient referral or discharge letter — more familiar territory for clinical professionals but demanding in terms of formal register and completeness.

Most Indian nurses prefer OET for its clinical context, but it costs significantly more (approximately ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 per sitting depending on the test center) compared to IELTS (approximately ₹15,000 to ₹18,000). If your Writing is strong, IELTS is more economical. If you have any doubt about academic essay writing, OET gives you a better chance of a single clean result.

The NMC CBT: Available in India

The Computer Based Test is administered through Pearson VUE test centers across India, with locations in major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and others. The CBT is a multiple-choice theoretical nursing examination that covers clinical knowledge, safe practice, and professional values.

You must register for the CBT through the NMC platform after your initial application is accepted. The wait time for a CBT slot in India varies — popular test centers in Mumbai and Delhi sometimes have four to six week waits. Book as early as possible after your NMC eligibility is confirmed.

The CBT is discipline-specific: Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Children's Nursing, or Learning Disabilities Nursing. Your CBT must align with the discipline you are registering to practice.

Securing a Job Offer from an NHS Trust

With a valid language test result and a CBT pass, you are eligible to be offered employment by an NHS Trust or private hospital with a sponsor license. India is a Green List country, which means NHS Trusts and registered agencies can actively recruit there — you may receive approaches from agencies, or you can apply directly.

If applying through an agency, verify that the agency is listed on the GOV.UK register of licensed sponsors (if they are placing you directly with a Trust) and that they are not charging you any recruitment fee. Legitimate agencies are paid by the employer.

If applying directly to NHS Trusts, use NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk) and filter for international vacancies. Some large teaching hospitals run regular international recruitment drives and specifically list positions open to overseas applicants.

Your salary will be on the NHS Agenda for Change scale — nurses typically start at Band 5 (£31,049 annually, rising to £37,796 with experience for 2025/2026). Pre-registration, you may be brought in at Band 3 or 4 during the OSCE period, with automatic step-up on passing.

The Visa Application

Once you have a CoS, you apply for the Health and Care Worker visa. For Indian nationals, this is processed through VFS Global application centers in India.

India is one of the listed countries where a Tuberculosis test certificate is required if you have lived in India for six months or more in the period before your application. The TB test must be done at a UK Visas and Immigration-approved clinic (not any clinic), and results are valid for six months. Book this concurrently with your visa application preparation, not after, to avoid delay.

The visa application fee for health and care workers is £628 for a visa of more than three years. There is no Immigration Health Surcharge — a saving of £1,035 per person per year compared to other Skilled Worker routes.

Processing typically takes around three weeks after you attend your biometric appointment at the VFS center.

After Five Years: ILR for Indian NHS Nurses

Indian nationals planning for long-term settlement should note: the standard ILR salary threshold of £41,700 does not apply to NHS nurses on Agenda for Change pay scales. Instead, you qualify for settlement simply by meeting the appropriate AfC band rate — with an absolute minimum floor of £25,000. A Band 5 nurse automatically qualifies.

The five-year ILR pathway is straightforward if you have maintained continuous employment and haven't spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period.
