UK Skilled Worker Visa Salary Threshold 2026: What Bangladeshi Professionals Need to Earn

The salary requirement for a UK Skilled Worker visa is not a single number. This is the mistake that catches Bangladeshi professionals by surprise after they have already accepted a job offer, paid for their TB test, and started the ECCTIS process. The offer looks compliant. The Home Office disagrees. The application is refused.

Understanding how the threshold actually works — not just what the headline number is — is essential before you accept any offer from a UK employer.

The Headline Number: £41,700

From July 22, 2025, the general salary threshold for most new Skilled Worker applicants is £41,700 per year. This replaced the previous thresholds of £26,200 (pre-2024) and £38,700 (2024 to mid-2025). It represents a significant increase that has pushed a large number of roles — particularly mid-level management and support functions — out of eligibility.

At £41,700, the hourly equivalent (based on a 37.5-hour week) is £21.38. The Home Office has also set a hard hourly floor of £17.13 per hour, which applies regardless of the annualised salary in certain calculation scenarios.

The "Higher of Two" Rule

The general threshold is only the starting point. The Home Office requires that your salary is whichever is higher: the general threshold of £41,700, or the "going rate" for your specific occupation code under the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC 2020) system.

The going rate is set at the 25th percentile of UK earnings data for that occupation. It is different for every job code.

Examples:

  • Software Developer (SOC 2134): Going rate £49,400. Even though the general threshold is £41,700, a developer must earn £49,400.
  • Nurse (SOC 2231) under Health and Care Worker route: Different rules apply with a lower threshold.
  • Civil Engineer (SOC 2121): Going rate approximately £42,900, which is higher than the general threshold, so £42,900 applies.
  • Accountant (SOC 2421): Going rate approximately £40,700, which is lower than £41,700, so the general threshold of £41,700 applies.

Your employer's offer letter should reference the specific SOC code for your role. If it does not, ask for it and look up the going rate yourself before proceeding.

Pro-Rating for Hours Worked

If your contracted hours are not 37.5 per week, the salary threshold is pro-rated. Working 40 hours a week means the 37.5-hour-equivalent going rate needs to be scaled up proportionally. Working fewer than 37.5 hours means a proportional reduction may apply — but the hourly rate must still meet the £17.13 floor.

The Home Office also changed its salary compliance rules from April 2026 to check compliance on a pay-period basis rather than just as an annual average. If your salary varies (commission, bonuses, fluctuating hours), each pay period must independently meet the threshold. Averaging a good month against a bad month no longer works.

Reduced Thresholds: The Tradeable Points System

For applicants who cannot meet the full £41,700, specific categories allow a reduced threshold in exchange for other characteristics. These are called "tradeable" points because they can substitute for part of the salary requirement.

New Entrant: Threshold drops to £33,400 (general) and 70% of the going rate applies. You qualify as a new entrant if you are under 26, are switching from a Student or Graduate visa, or are a postdoc researcher. This discount is limited to a cumulative four years — after that, you must meet the full threshold on any extension.

Relevant PhD: If you hold a PhD and the doctorate is directly relevant to the role, the threshold drops to £37,500 (90% of the going rate). For STEM PhDs specifically, the threshold is £33,400 (80% of going rate).

Immigration Salary List (ISL) roles: Certain occupations designated by the government allow a threshold of £33,400 at 100% of the going rate. Roles on this list have historically included nursing and some engineering specialisms. Check the current ISL at the time of your application — the list is revised periodically.

Healthcare: The Separate Track

If your role falls under the Health and Care Worker visa — covering nurses, healthcare assistants, clinical psychologists, and related roles recruited by the NHS or CQC-regulated providers — the salary requirements are significantly lower, starting from £29,000 to £31,300 depending on the specific NHS pay band and the "going rate" for that role.

More importantly, Health and Care Workers are exempt from paying the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is £1,035 per year for standard Skilled Worker applicants. Over a three-year visa, that is a £3,105 saving.

The trade-off is that your employer must be the NHS, an NHS-funded organisation, or a UK provider registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) providing activities regulated by CQC.

What Happens If Your Salary Looks Compliant But Isn't

The most common scenario: a Bangladeshi engineer is offered £41,700. Their employer believes this is fine because the general threshold is £41,700. But the going rate for their specific SOC code is £43,800. The application is refused because the salary does not meet the going rate requirement, even though it meets the general threshold.

A second scenario: the salary meets the threshold, but the offer includes a £5,000 performance bonus that is not guaranteed. The base salary alone is £36,700. The bonus cannot be counted toward threshold compliance for a Skilled Worker visa — only guaranteed salary elements count.

A third scenario: the employer deducts accommodation costs from salary as a "benefit in kind." The net salary after deductions drops below the threshold. The Home Office calculates compliance on gross salary minus any immigration-related deductions, not just the headline figure.

Using a Points Calculator

The gov.uk website includes an official points calculator for the Skilled Worker route. Enter your occupation code and proposed salary to see whether you meet the requirements. However, the calculator does not account for every edge case — particularly around new entrant eligibility and the April 2026 pay-period changes.

Before submitting an application based on a threshold calculation, the UK Skilled Worker Visa Guide for Bangladeshi Professionals walks through the exact salary compliance checks that UKVI caseworkers run, including how to handle bonus structures, working hour calculations, and reduced-threshold eligibility.
