Youth Mobility Visa Documents Checklist: Everything You Need to Apply

Most Youth Mobility Scheme refusals don't happen because someone was ineligible — they happen because a bank statement had the wrong date, the TB certificate was from an unapproved clinic, or the savings balance dipped by a few pounds at the wrong moment. The documents aren't complicated, but the rules around them are precise.

Here's a complete checklist of what you'll need, with the specific Home Office requirements that the official GOV.UK guidance quietly glosses over.

Core Documents Required by Everyone

Valid biometric passport Your passport must be biometric (the type with a chip symbol on the cover). It must remain valid for the duration of your planned stay in the UK — ideally with six months or more beyond your intended departure date to provide buffer. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it before applying.

Completed online application form The application is submitted through the UKVI online portal at gov.uk/youth-mobility. You'll create an account, complete the form, pay fees, and then either use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) for biometrics.

Bank statements showing maintenance funds This is where most applications get into trouble. You need to show you hold £2,530 in a personal bank account. The rules:

  • The balance must not drop below £2,530 at any point during the 28-day window
  • Day 28 of that window must fall within 31 days of the date you submit and pay for the application
  • The statements must clearly show your full name, account number, and the bank's logo
  • If the statements are in a foreign language, a certified English translation is required
  • Joint accounts are acceptable only if you are one of the account holders
  • Savings or fixed-term accounts that restrict access may not qualify — the funds must be accessible

Payment of the visa application fee (£340) and Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,552) Both are paid online during the application. The IHS is calculated at £776 per year — so £1,552 for the standard two-year visa. These fees are non-refundable if your application is refused.

Identity Verification

Biometric passport holders (Australia, Canada, NZ, Japan, etc.) You'll likely be offered the UK Immigration: ID Check app, which allows you to scan your passport's NFC chip and take a facial selfie using your smartphone. This eliminates the need for an in-person VAC appointment. Check eligibility on the application portal — it depends on your nationality and passport type.

VAC appointment (where app is unavailable) If the app is not available for your nationality — common for Indian nationals and some others — you'll need to book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre in your country to provide fingerprints and a photograph. VAC appointment slots can fill up weeks in advance; book early.

TB Test Certificate (If Required)

Nationals from countries on the UK's mandatory TB testing list must submit a certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic. This applies to residents (not just nationals) — if you're a Canadian who has lived in India for the past six months, you may need to test before you leave.

Countries requiring a TB test include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, South Africa, Philippines, and many others. The full list is on GOV.UK.

Key rules:

  • The test must be done at a Home Office-approved clinic only — other clinics are not accepted
  • The certificate must be issued within six months of your application date
  • Cost is roughly £160 depending on country and clinic
  • The test checks for active TB using a chest X-ray; latent TB does not disqualify you

Country-Specific Documents

India YPS applicants

  • Evidence of a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher (RQF Level 6, 7, or 8). The Home Office accepts degree certificates and transcripts, but Indian degrees must typically be assessed by Ecctis (formerly NARIC). Allow extra time — Ecctis statements can take 3–5 weeks.
  • Police clearance certificate from every country you've lived in for 12+ months in the past 10 years

Andorra, Iceland, San Marino, Uruguay applicants

  • Criminal record certificate issued within the last six months by the relevant national authority

Taiwan and Hong Kong SAR (ballot-required countries) These applicants must first enter and win a ballot before applying. The ballot requires only basic personal information — no documents at the ballot stage. Documents are prepared and submitted after receiving an Invitation to Apply.

What You Don't Need (Contrary to Common Misconceptions)

  • A job offer: The YMS is sponsor-free. No employer commitment is required before applying.
  • An itinerary or travel plans: You don't need to show accommodation bookings or a return flight.
  • Evidence of ties to your home country: Unlike some visa types, you're not required to demonstrate intent to return.
  • A cover letter: The application is structured as a form; no personal statement is needed.

Application Timeline

Once you've gathered your documents, here's the typical sequence:

  1. Prepare documents (allow 2–4 weeks for TB tests, Ecctis assessments, bank statement seasoning)
  2. Complete the online application form and pay fees (1–2 hours)
  3. ID Check app scan or VAC biometrics appointment (same day or within a few days)
  4. Standard processing: approximately 3 weeks from biometrics
  5. Enter the UK within 90 days of visa approval

Your visa start date is linked to your date of entry — the two years run from when you first activate the visa by entering the UK, not from the date it was approved. This gives you flexibility in timing your move.

The 31-Day Trap Most Applicants Miss

The most counterintuitive rule: your 28-day savings window must end within 31 days of your application payment date. Many applicants start gathering their bank statements early — say, in January — without realizing that if they don't pay their application fee until March, their January statements are now outside the 31-day window and invalid.

Plan the timing of your application payment carefully. Once you've assembled all your documents and your savings have been continuously above £2,530 for 28 days, submit and pay immediately. Don't let the clock slip.

If you're unsure whether your statements meet the exact requirements, the complete guide walks through exactly what caseworkers look for — and the most common ways applicants inadvertently fail this check.
