First British Passport After Naturalisation: How to Apply and What to Expect

Once you walk out of your citizenship ceremony with your naturalisation certificate, you're British. But you don't yet have a British passport — and under rules introduced in 2026, that gap matters more than it used to. Here's what to do immediately.

What Changes the Moment Your Certificate Is Handed Over

Your BRP stops being valid the moment you receive your naturalisation certificate at the ceremony. You have 5 working days to return it to the Home Office. The return address is in the letter you received with your ceremony invitation — it goes to:

Biometrics Enrolment and Casework Team
UK Visas and Immigration
PO Box 306
Liverpool L2 0QN

You can also confirm the current return address on gov.uk, as it has changed in the past. Post it recorded delivery so you have proof.

You are no longer on any form of "leave to remain" — you are a British citizen. Your right to live and work in the UK no longer derives from your BRP.

The 2026 Rule That Makes This Urgent

Under ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) enforcement rules introduced in 2026, dual nationals who hold British citizenship must use their British passport to enter the UK. Airlines are required to check this at the boarding gate. If you present a foreign passport at check-in, you may be denied boarding.

This means: do not book international travel after your ceremony assuming you can enter the UK on your foreign passport. You need to either apply for your British passport before travelling or check carefully whether ETA rules apply to you given your dual nationality. For most naturalised British citizens, the British passport is now the required document for UK entry.

How to Apply for Your First British Passport

Where: Apply online at gov.uk/apply-renew-passport. For a first British passport after naturalisation, this is always a new application, not a renewal.

Cost: £102 online (as of April 2026).

Processing time: 3 to 10 weeks under the standard service. There is an urgent service (one-week turnaround) available at premium cost if you have imminent travel — check availability at gov.uk as it requires an appointment.

What You Need to Send

The first British passport application after naturalisation requires you to mail physical documents to the Passport Office. You cannot complete this application digitally — physical documents are mandatory.

Documents to include:

  • Your naturalisation certificate (original, not a copy)
  • Your foreign passport (the passport of your previous nationality)
  • Two identical passport photos, countersigned on the back if required
  • The completed application form (printed from the online system after completing the digital section)

The Passport Office returns all original documents once your passport is issued. Your naturalisation certificate is returned with your new British passport.

Send by special delivery or tracked post — your naturalisation certificate is irreplaceable without a costly replacement application.

Common Questions

Can I travel internationally while waiting for my passport? If you hold another passport, you can travel on it — but you must use your British passport to re-enter the UK under 2026 ETA rules. This is a genuine catch-22 that catches people out. If you have imminent international travel after naturalisation, either apply for the urgent passport service or delay travel until your British passport arrives.

What if my naturalisation certificate gets lost in the post? Apply by special delivery. If you do lose the certificate before applying, you must apply for a replacement from the Home Office on form NatCert before you can apply for a passport. The replacement fee is £433 (2026). This is the main reason to treat the certificate as your most important document.

Do I need to send my foreign passport? Yes. The Passport Office needs to verify your previous nationality as part of the first passport process. They return it.

What happens to my name if it's different on my naturalisation certificate and my foreign passport? Include the deed poll or marriage certificate explaining any name difference. If you want your British passport in a different name than your naturalisation certificate, you'll need additional documentation — this situation is best handled by contacting the Passport Office directly before submitting.

Can I use my British passport immediately? Yes — from the moment it's issued, you can use it. It's valid for 10 years.

OCI for Indian Nationals

If you were Indian before naturalising, your Indian passport is cancelled when you become British (India does not permit dual citizenship). You should apply for an OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card immediately after naturalising.

The OCI application is made through the OCI portal (ociservices.gov.in or through the Indian High Commission in London). You will need your naturalisation certificate and your former Indian passport. OCI gives you lifelong visa-free access to India, the right to work and study there, and the ability to own property — it restores most practical rights without restoring citizenship.

Processing varies but typically takes 8-12 weeks. Apply as soon as you have your naturalisation certificate, as the OCI takes time and you'll want it in hand before travelling to India.

The UK British Citizenship (Naturalisation) Guide includes a post-ceremony checklist with the full passport application sequence, BRP return instructions, and the OCI application steps for Indian nationals.
