How to Apply for OCI from the UK After British Naturalisation
India does not permit dual citizenship. After acquiring British citizenship, you must surrender your Indian passport and follow the Indian surrender/renunciation process. What replaces citizenship for most Indian-born British citizens is OCI: Overseas Citizenship of India. This is not citizenship, but it gives you lifelong visa-free access to India, the right to live and work there, and the ability to own property. For practical purposes, it's the closest India offers.
Here's how to apply from the UK.
What OCI Gives You
OCI is a permanent status. Once granted, the OCI card is valid indefinitely; update the OCI record when you get a new passport under the current OCI Miscellaneous Services rules. It entitles you to:
- Multiple entry, multipurpose, lifelong visa to India
- Exemption from registering with police on arrival for stays of any length
- The right to work and study in India
- The right to open and operate bank accounts in India
- The right to purchase non-agricultural property in India
- Parity with Non-Resident Indians for most economic activities
What OCI does not give you:
- The right to vote in Indian elections
- The right to hold public office in India
- The right to purchase agricultural land or plantations in India
- An Indian passport (OCI holders travel on their foreign passport)
When to Apply
Apply as soon as you have completed the passport surrender steps — ideally within the first week or two. There is no general application deadline, but you'll want OCI in hand before you next travel to India. Processing can take 2–4 months.
If you try to travel to India on your British passport without OCI, you will need to apply for a regular Indian visa through the usual route — which is more expensive and time-limited.
The Application Process
Step 1: Complete the online application
Go to the OCI services portal: ociservices.gov.in. Select "Fresh OCI Card Application." Fill in all required fields. The form will ask for:
- Your personal details as they appear on your British passport
- Details of your former Indian passport
- Details of your British naturalisation certificate
- Details of your parents' citizenship (if one or both parents are Indian)
- Details of any previous OCI or PIO (Person of Indian Origin) cards held
At the end of the online form, you'll generate a PDF application that you need to print.
Step 2: Gather your documents
You'll need:
- Printed OCI application form (from the portal)
- Your current British passport (original + photocopy of photo page)
- Your naturalisation certificate (photocopy — keep the original, some offices accept certified copies)
- Your former Indian passport (original + photocopy of front page and last page, and the page showing your last Indian visa or entry stamp if applicable)
- Two recent passport-size photographs (white background)
- Proof of current address in the UK (utility bill, bank statement)
- Fee payment (see below)
If you were previously a PIO card holder, include your PIO card.
Step 3: Submit to the Indian High Commission
Applications in the UK are processed through:
Indian High Commission, London
India House, Aldwych, London WC2B 4NA
Submit in person at the VFS Global centre for your jurisdiction. Postal applications are not accepted for this service. Check the current VFS Global and Indian High Commission instructions before attending.
Step 4: Fee payment
The OCI application fee is set by the Indian government and is subject to change. Check the current Indian High Commission and VFS Global fee schedules before preparing your payment, including service and courier charges.
Step 5: Wait for processing
Processing can take 2–4 months. You will receive your OCI card; originals are returned according to the current VFS process. Track your application through the OCI portal using your application reference number.

Updating Your OCI When You Get a New British Passport
This is the most common post-approval step people forget. When you receive a new British passport, update your OCI record within three months under the current OCI rules. The OCI card itself stays valid, subject to the applicable update or reissue process.
The OCI update or reissue for a new passport is simpler than the original application — use the current OCI Miscellaneous Services and VFS process with your new passport and existing OCI documents.
If Your OCI Application Is Delayed
OCI processing can be slow, particularly if the High Commission's backlog is long. The online tracker gives you status updates, but if your application has been pending for over 12 weeks without movement, you can submit a query through the High Commission's online enquiry system or contact VFS directly.
For travel to India during the OCI wait period, apply for a standard Indian visa in the interim. You can hold an Indian visa alongside a pending OCI application.
The UK British Citizenship (Naturalisation) Guide covers the post-naturalisation OCI process as part of the broader post-ceremony checklist, alongside the BRP return, first British passport application, and ETA travel rules for dual nationals.
