UK Skilled Worker Visa for Nigerians: The Japa Route Explained

Over 52,000 Nigerians migrated to the UK in 2024 alone, driven by the Japa movement — a broad cultural and economic push to relocate abroad for better professional opportunities. The UK Skilled Worker route is the primary legal pathway for Nigerian professionals with degree-level qualifications and a UK job offer. But the social media landscape around Japa is saturated with outdated, oversimplified, or outright incorrect information. Here is what the process actually looks like in 2026.

Who Qualifies for a UK Skilled Worker Visa from Nigeria

The Skilled Worker visa requires you to have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that holds an active Home Office Sponsor Licence. The job must meet three criteria:

  • Skill level: The role must be assessed at RQF Level 6 (graduate-equivalent) or above. As of July 2025, sub-degree roles were largely removed from standard eligibility. Nigerian professionals most frequently qualifying under this route include engineers, IT professionals, accountants, pharmacists, and secondary school teachers.
  • Salary threshold: Your offered salary must meet the higher of £41,700 per year (the general threshold) or the specific "going rate" for your occupation's Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code. For a software developer (SOC 2134), the binding minimum is £54,700 — the going rate is higher than the general floor.
  • English language: You must demonstrate proficiency at CEFR Level B2 or above. A degree taught in English, verified by Ecctis, satisfies this requirement for most Nigerian university graduates without needing to sit a separate language test.

What the Japa Discourse Gets Wrong

TikTok and Instagram reels about Japa frequently present the UK as accessible to anyone with a degree and ambition. Several common misconceptions circulate heavily:

"Care workers can bring their family." The ban on dependants for care workers (SOC codes 6135 and 6136) introduced in 2024 remains fully in force. Care workers sponsored under the Health and Care Worker route cannot bring spouses or children to the UK. This rule devastated many Nigerian families who had planned the move together.

"You only need £26,200 or £38,700." The general salary threshold is now £41,700 for new applications, and in many occupations the going rate is higher still. Applying with a salary below the applicable threshold results in automatic refusal and forfeiture of all fees.

"Your employer handles everything once they sponsor you." Your employer handles the CoS, but the visa application itself — including all supporting documents — is your responsibility. A company's HR team generating a CoS does not mean they will check your SELT certificate, validate your bank statements, or confirm your POSSAP clearance meets UKVI standards.

Nigeria-Specific Requirements

Police Clearance Certificate (POSSAP): If your role is in healthcare, education, or social care — sectors that dominate Nigerian Japa migration — you need a Nigerian Police Force clearance certificate via the POSSAP portal. The critical requirement is that the POSSAP PDF must be physically authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Abuja before submission. UKVI cannot verify Nigerian Police Force QR codes remotely. An unauthenticated PDF is automatically rejected. Allow at minimum four to eight weeks for the POSSAP process including MFA authentication.

TB Test: All residents of Nigeria applying for UK immigration must complete a chest X-ray at a Home Office-approved IOM clinic in Lagos, Abuja, or Kano. The certificate is valid for six months. Do not use a general hospital or private clinic that is not on the approved panel — the certificate will be rejected.

English Language: Nigerian university graduates with degrees taught in English should apply to Ecctis for an Academic Qualification Level Statement (AQUALS) and an English Language Proficiency Statement (ELPS). This is typically faster and cheaper than sitting IELTS for UKVI, and many Nigerian universities taught entirely in English at degree level. However, the degree must be equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree — Ecctis's formal verification confirms this.

The Salary Calculation That Catches Nigerian Applicants

Nigerian job seekers frequently negotiate salary figures before either party has verified the SOC code and going rate. A common scenario: an applicant negotiates a £43,000 salary for an IT role, assumes it clears the £41,700 general threshold, and applies. The refusal arrives because:

  1. The correct SOC code for their role carries a going rate above £43,000, or
  2. Their contract states a 39-hour week, and the pro-rated going rate calculation pushes the required salary above what was offered

The Home Office calculates all going rates against a 37.5-hour baseline. If your contract states 40 hours per week, the going rate threshold must be multiplied by 40/37.5 — an 6.7% uplift. A role with a going rate of £41,200 requires a salary of at least £43,947 for a 40-hour contract.

Confirm the exact SOC code on your CoS with your employer before they finalise it, then verify the going rate for that code in Appendix Skilled Occupations on gov.uk. Run the pro-rata calculation using your contracted hours.

Costs Nigerian Applicants Should Budget For

The total cost of a five-year Skilled Worker visa application from Nigeria, not including relocation or employer costs, typically includes:

  • UKVI application fee: £1,618 (applying from outside the UK, over 3 years)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,145 per year — £5,725 upfront for a five-year visa
  • POSSAP clearance and MFA authentication: approximately £80–£150 equivalent
  • IOM TB test: approximately £50–£80 equivalent at a Nigeria clinic
  • Ecctis credential evaluation: approximately £180–£200

For healthcare workers qualifying under the Health and Care Worker sub-route, the application fees are significantly discounted (£324 for up to 3 years) and the IHS is waived entirely — one of the genuine financial advantages of the HCW pathway.

Planning Your Application Timeline

Given the lead time required for the POSSAP process, TB testing, and Ecctis evaluation, Nigerian applicants should begin gathering documents as soon as a CoS is imminent — not after it arrives. A realistic timeline from "CoS confirmed" to "visa submitted" is six to twelve weeks for a well-organised applicant.

The UK Skilled Worker Visa Guide includes a step-by-step timeline, Nigeria-specific document requirements, and the pro-rata salary calculator to ensure your application package is complete before a penny in fees is paid.
