UK Work Visa for Nigerians: Skilled Worker Route 2026
Nigeria consistently ranks among the top three source countries for UK Skilled Worker visas. Approximately 52,000 Nigerians migrated to the UK in 2024 alone, driven by the structural "Japa" movement — a cultural phenomenon propelling skilled professionals to seek better professional infrastructure abroad. The UK Skilled Worker route is the primary legal pathway for working professionals, but Nigerian applicants face a specific set of documentary requirements that, when mishandled, result in delays and refusals that are entirely avoidable.
Who Can Apply
Any Nigerian national can apply for a UK Skilled Worker visa provided they meet the standard eligibility criteria:
- A confirmed job offer from a UK employer with an active Sponsor Licence
- A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from that employer
- A salary of at least £41,700 per year or the occupation-specific going rate — whichever is higher
- Proof of English at CEFR Level B2
- £1,270 in personal savings (held 28 consecutive days) or employer-certified maintenance
- Compliance with criminal record and health clearance requirements
English Language for Nigerian Applicants
Nigeria is not on the Home Office's majority English-speaking country exemption list. Nigerian applicants must provide evidence of B2 English proficiency through either:
SELT from an approved provider: IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, or another designated secure test. All four components — speaking, listening, reading, writing — must reach B2 individually. Results are valid for two years from the test date.
Degree taught in English with Ecctis verification: If you hold a degree from a Nigerian university taught in English, you may use Ecctis verification to meet the language requirement. Ecctis must confirm both the qualification level (AQUALS) and that the degree was taught and assessed in English (ELPS). Nigerian universities are broadly recognized by Ecctis, but the specific program and institution must be verifiable. Confirm before relying on this route.
TB Test Requirement
Nigeria is on the mandatory TB testing list. You must obtain a tuberculosis test certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic before applying.
Approved clinics for Nigeria include International Organization for Migration (IOM) clinics in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. The Home Office updated its approved Nigeria clinic list in February 2026 — ensure you book at a currently approved location, not one that may have been removed from the list.
The test involves a chest X-ray and must be conducted at an approved clinic only. Standard hospital radiology departments are not accepted. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the test date.

Police Clearance: The POSSAP and MOFA Authentication Chain
This is the most documented source of refusals for Nigerian Skilled Worker applicants, and it catches even well-prepared applicants who follow most of the process correctly.
Step 1: Apply through the POSSAP portal The Nigeria Police Force uses the Police Clearance Certificate Issuance System (POSSAP). Apply at the POSSAP online portal, pay the fee (₦10,000–₦15,000), and book a biometric capture appointment at Force CID or the Alagbon Close facility in Lagos.
Step 2: Receive the POSSAP PDF After biometric capture and processing (typically 5–10 working days), you receive a digital PDF with a QR code. This document looks complete and official.
Step 3: Authenticate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) — this is not optional UK immigration officers cannot access NPF database systems to verify POSSAP QR codes. A POSSAP PDF without MFA authentication is treated by UKVI as unverifiable and is rejected immediately.
You must take your POSSAP document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja for a physical authentication stamp. Standard processing at MFA Abuja takes 5–7 working days, but can take considerably longer during high-demand periods (typically around application deadlines and before UK holiday windows).
Without the physical MFA authentication stamp, your police clearance is not valid for UK immigration purposes — even though the POSSAP PDF itself appears to be a complete official document.
Who needs police clearance? Criminal record certificates are mandatory for applicants sponsored in healthcare, education, or social care sectors. If your role does not fall in these sectors, police clearance is not required. Check whether your specific SOC code and sector triggers this requirement before beginning the POSSAP process.
Key Restrictions for Care Workers
Nigerians who obtained UK Skilled Worker visas in care worker or senior care worker roles (SOC codes 6135, 6136) — a significant group given the historical volume of Nigerian care worker visas — are subject to two critical restrictions that remain in force in 2026:
No dependants: Care workers and senior care workers cannot bring dependants to the UK. Spouses and children cannot be included on the main applicant's visa.
Lower salary threshold under HCW sub-category: Roles falling under the Health and Care Worker visa sub-category benefit from reduced application fees and are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge — but these come with the restrictions above.
If you are in a care sector role and want to bring family, you must transition to an eligible occupation at RQF Level 6 first.
The Application Process from Nigeria
- Confirm your UK employer's Sponsor Licence is active on the Register of Licensed Sponsors
- Have the employer assign a Defined CoS

- Pay the visa fee (£1,618 for over 3 years) and IHS (£1,145/year)
- Obtain your TB test certificate from an IOM-approved clinic
- Obtain your POSSAP clearance and MFA authentication (if in healthcare/education/social care)
- Book your biometric appointment at the VFS Global VAC in Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt
- Upload documents and attend your biometrics appointment
- Await decision — standard processing is approximately 3 weeks from biometrics
Priority and Super Priority services are available in Nigeria but slot availability varies. Confirm current availability when booking.
Salary Compliance Before Accepting Any Offer
Many Nigerian applicants receive job offers and begin the visa process without first verifying whether the offered salary meets the correct threshold for their SOC code and contracted hours. Verify this before accepting:
- What is the SOC 2020 code for the role?
- What is the current going rate for that code (check Appendix Skilled Occupations)?
- Does your contract specify more than 37.5 hours per week? If so, the going rate must be scaled up proportionally.
- Does your salary consist of guaranteed basic pay only — or does it include bonuses or overtime? Only guaranteed basic pay counts.
