UK Skilled Worker Visa Processing Time 2026: Standard, Priority, and Super Priority

How long your UK Skilled Worker visa takes to process depends on where you apply from, whether you pay for an expedited service, and whether your application is complete and clean on submission. The official timelines are published, but real-world processing regularly diverges from them when applications trigger manual review.

Standard Processing Times

Entry clearance (applying from outside the UK): 3 weeks

This is the published standard for applicants applying from their home country or a third country at an overseas Visa Application Centre. The clock starts after you complete biometric enrollment at a VAC — not when you submit the online form.

Permission to stay (applying from inside the UK): 8 weeks

In-country applications — switching from a Student or Graduate visa, extending an existing Skilled Worker visa, or changing employer — take significantly longer under standard processing. Eight weeks is the published target; during peak periods, delays beyond this are common.

The eight-week gap between overseas and in-country timelines reflects the different processing queues and additional checks associated with permission-to-stay applications.

Priority Service (5 Working Days)

Priority service is available for both entry clearance and permission-to-stay applications. The published target is a decision within 5 working days.

Cost: £500 in addition to the standard visa application fee

This service does not guarantee approval — it guarantees a faster decision, whether that decision is approved or refused. If you are using Priority service to accelerate a clean, complete application with a clear start date, it typically delivers. If your application has any complexity (salary calculations near the threshold, documents requiring additional verification), the faster queue does not prevent the case being referred for manual review, which may extend the timeline regardless.

Priority service is available to book at the same time as your standard application fee payment.

Super Priority Service (Next Working Day)

Super Priority service targets a decision by the end of the next working day after your biometric appointment or document upload.

Cost: £1,000 in addition to the standard visa application fee

This is available for both entry clearance and permission-to-stay applications, though availability is limited at some overseas VACs. You must confirm that Super Priority is offered at your chosen VAC location before building it into your timeline.

The next-working-day target assumes biometrics are completed and all documents are uploaded before the relevant cut-off time (typically in the morning). Applications submitted after the cut-off or on Fridays effectively become two-working-day decisions.

Super Priority is most commonly used by applicants with urgent start dates, fixed relocation windows, or situations where the 60-day curtailment clock is running (such as applicants whose current employer's Sponsor Licence was revoked or who are approaching the end of their Graduate visa with little buffer time).

What Causes Processing Delays

The published processing targets assume a clean, complete application. Several factors cause cases to exit the standard queue and enter manual review:

Salary calculations near the threshold: Applications where the declared salary is close to the applicable going rate are more likely to be scrutinised manually, particularly if the SOC code is high-value. Even if the salary is technically compliant, the case may be held for a caseworker to verify the pro-rata calculation.

Complex or unfamiliar SOC codes: Some occupation codes attract more scrutiny than others. Applications for roles with high rates of code misuse (certain IT, healthcare management, or education roles) may be flagged for additional review.

Document authentication issues: If a document — particularly a police clearance certificate — has been submitted without the correct foreign ministry authentication, the application typically is not paused for the applicant to correct it. It is refused.

Biometric appointment delays: At some overseas VACs, appointment availability is limited and adds weeks to the timeline independent of UKVI processing speed. The processing clock starts only after biometrics are captured.

No-show at biometrics: Failing to attend your biometric appointment without rebooking causes the application to be withdrawn.

How to Build Your Timeline

If you have a fixed start date with your employer, work backwards:

  1. Your employer needs to assign the CoS before you can submit the application
  2. You need to complete biometrics — either via the smartphone ID Check app (if eligible) or at a VAC
  3. Standard processing from overseas: add 3 weeks from biometric submission
  4. Add buffer time for document preparation (TB test, English evidence, bank statements)

For most entry clearance applicants who plan carefully, 6 to 8 weeks from receiving the CoS to having a visa is achievable under standard processing. In-country switches need more time — 10 to 12 weeks from CoS assignment is a more realistic buffer given the 8-week published timeline and any potential delays.

If your start date is firm and less than 4 weeks away from your CoS assignment, Priority service is usually worth the additional cost. If it is less than 2 weeks away and the application is straightforward, Super Priority is the only service that realistically gets you a decision in time.
