UK Spouse Visa Processing Time 2026: How Long Does It Take?
UK Spouse Visa Processing Time 2026: How Long Does It Take?
The honest answer: longer than most couples expect, and slower than the government's headline figures suggest. The published standard processing times are targets, not guarantees. An application that needs a request for further information (an S56 notice) or gets flagged for additional scrutiny can take months beyond the standard window. Here is what to realistically plan for.
Standard Processing Times
The Home Office publishes target processing times based on where you are applying from:
| Application Type | Standard Processing Target |
|---|---|
| Out-of-country (entry clearance from abroad) | ~12 weeks from biometric appointment |
| In-country (leave to remain/FLR(M) from inside UK) | ~8 weeks from UKVCAS appointment |
These are targets. During peak periods — typically spring and autumn — processing times extend. The Home Office does not publish live queue data, so your actual wait can only be tracked through the applicant's UKVI account and any acknowledgement correspondence.
The clock starts from your biometric appointment, not from when you submitted the online form or paid the fees. There can be a gap of days or weeks between form submission and biometric appointment, particularly in high-demand countries where Visa Application Centre slots are limited.
Priority and Super Priority Processing
Applicants can pay to expedite:
Priority Service — £500:
- Out-of-country: targets a decision within 30 working days of the biometric appointment
- In-country: targets a decision within 5 working days of the UKVCAS appointment
Super Priority Service — £1,000:
- Primarily available for in-country (UKVCAS) appointments
- Targets a decision by the end of the next working day after the appointment
- Not generally available for out-of-country applications
If the Home Office fails to meet the priority target, they refund the priority service fee. They do not refund the main application fee or IHS if the application is refused.
Super Priority availability is limited and subject to appointment slots — it is not available at all UKVCAS centres, and demand fluctuates. Check availability when booking your UKVCAS appointment rather than assuming it will be accessible.
How Long the Total Process Takes from Start to Finish
The clock for couples starts well before the biometric appointment. Realistically, from deciding to apply to having entry clearance in hand:
- Preparation and document gathering: 4–12 weeks, depending on how long it takes to accumulate six months of bank statements, arrange an English language test appointment, get a TB test if required, obtain certified translations, and prepare the financial evidence
- Submitting the online form and paying fees: 1 day
- VAC/UKVCAS appointment booking lead time: 1–6 weeks depending on location and demand
- Processing time (standard): 12 weeks out-of-country, 8 weeks in-country
- Entry clearance vignette and travel window: 30 days
For an out-of-country application on the standard track, 5–6 months from starting preparation to arrival in the UK is a reasonable expectation. High-demand locations like Pakistan, India, and Nigeria often see VAC appointment slots fill up weeks in advance, adding to the overall timeline.

What Causes Delays Beyond the Standard Window
Further information requests: If a caseworker cannot determine from the evidence whether a requirement is met, they may issue an S56 notice requesting additional information. Responding to this restarts part of the processing clock. Applications with complex financial arrangements — Category B income, self-employment, or mixed income sources — are more likely to receive information requests.
Document authenticity checks: If any documents raise questions about authenticity, they may be referred to a specialist team. This is more common for certain source countries.
High volume periods: The Home Office does not publish queue lengths. Anecdotally, applications submitted in January–March and August–October tend to take longer due to higher volumes.
Biometric re-enrollment issues: If there is a technical problem with biometric enrollment, the application can be paused.
Nationality-specific processing: Applications from some countries involving additional security checks take longer regardless of the standard target.
The TB Test Timing Problem
One avoidable delay is getting the TB test too early. A TB test certificate is only valid for six months from the date of the chest X-ray. If you get the test before your bank statements have matured (the six-month statement window), the certificate may expire before you can submit the application. You would need to get a new test, costing additional fees and weeks.
The right sequence for out-of-country applicants from TB-listed countries:
- Identify when your six-month bank statement window will end
- Book your TB test so the certificate will still be valid when you submit (within six months of the test date)
- Sit your English language test — A1 IELTS Life Skills or equivalent — ensuring it is a SELT not a standard IELTS
- Complete the online application when all documents are in the 28-day window
- Pay fees and book the VAC appointment as soon as possible after submitting
Planning Around the Visa Duration
Once approved, an out-of-country visa is valid for 33 months from the date you enter the UK. An in-country extension gives 30 months. Budget the extension application 2–3 months before your current visa expires — processing still takes 8 weeks, and you want the overlap in case of delays.
