UK Skilled Worker Visa for South Africans: 2026 Guide

South African professionals represent a sizable cohort in UK skilled migration, clustered across engineering, finance, healthcare, and IT. Many South Africans also have a parallel pathway through the UK Ancestry Visa if they have a British grandparent — but for those without ancestral ties, the Skilled Worker route is the primary option for working in the UK long-term. Here is what the application looks like in 2026.

Core Eligibility Requirements

The Skilled Worker visa requires a confirmed job offer from a UK employer with an active Home Office Sponsor Licence. Three foundational requirements must all be met:

Skill level: The role must be at RQF Level 6 (degree-equivalent) or above. As of July 2025, sub-degree roles were removed from standard Skilled Worker eligibility unless they appear on the Temporary Shortage List. Most South African professionals in engineering, accounting, IT, or management will be applying into RQF Level 6 occupations.

Salary: Your salary must meet the higher of £41,700 per year (the general threshold) or the going rate for your SOC 2020 code. For engineers (SOC 2121 — civil engineer), the general threshold of £41,700 applies as the going rate for civil engineers sits at £39,000. For other engineering specialisms with higher going rates, the going rate is binding. Confirm the correct SOC code and going rate before accepting any salary offer.

English language: South Africa does not appear on the Home Office's list of majority English-speaking countries for immigration purposes. Most South African universities teach in English, so a degree-level qualification taught in English, verified by Ecctis, is generally the most straightforward route to meeting the B2 requirement. Alternatively, you can sit an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) — IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI are the most commonly used.

South Africa-Specific Document Requirements

TB Test: South Africa appears on the Home Office's TB-testing required list. All residents of South Africa applying for UK immigration must complete a chest X-ray at a Home Office-approved clinic before their application can be processed. The approved clinic list for South Africa is published on gov.uk — use only these facilities; a standard hospital X-ray report will be rejected. The certificate is valid for six months.

Police Clearance Certificate: If your sponsored role is in healthcare, education, or social care, you need a police clearance certificate from South Africa. The South African Police Service (SAPS) issues these through their Criminal Record Centre. You can apply in person at a SAPS station, or through the SAPS Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria. Once obtained, the certificate typically needs to be apostilled under the Hague Convention — South Africa is a signatory — before submission to UKVI. The DHA (Department of Home Affairs) handles apostille services in South Africa.

Passports and biometrics: South Africans with a biometric passport can use the UK Immigration ID Check app to submit biometric data digitally, potentially avoiding the need to attend a Visa Application Centre in person. Verify current eligibility for this route at the time of application.

The Ancestry Visa Alternative

Many South Africans are eligible for the UK Ancestry Visa, which has very different terms from the Skilled Worker route. If you have a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, you may qualify. The Ancestry Visa allows you to work in the UK without requiring an employer sponsor, without salary thresholds, and without the RQF Level 6 skill requirement.

The trade-off is that the Ancestry Visa does not directly lead to settlement via the standard Skilled Worker earned settlement route — its ILR pathway has different rules. But for South Africans who qualify, it provides significant flexibility, particularly early in a career.

If you have a British grandparent, explore the Ancestry Visa alongside the Skilled Worker route before deciding which to pursue.

Salary Thresholds for Common South African Professions

South Africans frequently apply into engineering, IT, finance, and healthcare roles. These are the binding minimum salaries (the higher of £41,700 or the going rate) for common occupations as of 2026:

  • Civil engineer (SOC 2121): £41,700 (going rate £39,000; general threshold wins)
  • Software developer (SOC 2134): £54,700 (going rate is higher than £41,700)
  • Accountant (SOC 2421): £41,700 (going rate £38,300; general threshold wins)
  • Registered nurse (SOC 2231): NHS pay scales apply; general threshold not applicable on HCW route
  • Secondary school teacher (SOC 2314): National pay scales; general threshold exempt

If your contracted hours are more than 37.5 per week, the going rate must be adjusted upward proportionally. A role with a going rate of £41,700 offered on a 40-hour contract requires a salary of at least £44,480 (£41,700 × 40/37.5).

Costs to Budget For

A five-year Skilled Worker visa for a single South African applicant, applying from outside the UK, typically involves:

  • UKVI application fee: £1,618 (over 3 years, applying from outside the UK)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,145 per year — £5,725 upfront for five years
  • TB test at approved clinic: check current clinic fees
  • SAPS police clearance + apostille: variable; allow £30–£80 equivalent
  • Ecctis evaluation (if using degree for English language): approximately £170–£200
  • IELTS SELT (if not using degree route): approximately £200

For healthcare workers on the Health and Care Worker sub-route, the application fee is discounted to £324–£628 and the IHS is waived entirely, reducing the upfront cost substantially.

Planning Your Application

For South African applicants, the TB test and police clearance (if applicable) are the longest-lead items. SAPS clearance can take several weeks; TB test appointments at approved clinics may require advance booking. Start both processes as soon as your employer has confirmed they are preparing a CoS — do not wait until the CoS reference number is in hand.

If you are considering applying with a degree taught in English and want to avoid sitting an IELTS SELT, initiate the Ecctis application early. The evaluation typically takes three to four weeks, and you will need both the AQUALS (Academic Qualification Level Statement) and ELPS (English Language Proficiency Statement) to satisfy the B2 requirement this way.
