UK Visa Refusal Reasons for Bangladesh Applicants — And How to Avoid Them

UK Visa Refusal Reasons for Bangladesh Applicants — And How to Avoid Them

Approximately one in three UK Skilled Worker visa applications from Bangladesh is refused. That refusal rate — around 35% — is significantly higher than the global average and dramatically higher than the roughly 10% refusal rate for Indian applicants. The gap is not primarily about the quality of candidates. It reflects how UKVI approaches Bangladeshi files: with heightened scrutiny on document authenticity, salary compliance, and the credibility of the job offer.

Understanding why applications fail is the first step to making sure yours does not.

The Five Main Refusal Grounds

1. Salary and Going Rate Non-Compliance

The standard salary threshold for most Skilled Worker roles since July 2025 is £41,700 per year or the going rate for the specific SOC occupation code — whichever is higher.

The mistake many applicants make: assuming that £41,700 is always the target. It is not. A software developer (SOC 2134) has a going rate of £49,400 for a standard 37.5-hour week. A salary of £45,000 would fail even though it exceeds £41,700, because it falls below the occupation-specific going rate.

Verify your SOC code and the current going rate on the official Skilled Worker visa guidance before accepting an offer or completing the application. If your salary is slightly below the going rate, ask your employer whether you qualify as a "new entrant" (under 26, recent graduate, or postdoctoral), which permits a reduced threshold.

2. The Genuine Vacancy Test

UKVI caseworkers have broad authority to refuse an application if they believe the job role was created primarily to facilitate immigration rather than to fill a genuine business need. This is known as the Genuine Vacancy test.

Red flags that trigger scrutiny:

  • A role that does not align with the company's size or business activity (a 10-person startup sponsoring a Director of Engineering at £60,000)
  • A career switch where the applicant's Bangladeshi work history does not logically lead to the UK role (a secondary school teacher being hired as a Project Manager at a UK fintech)
  • A salary that appears artificially inflated on paper but is not supported by the company's turnover

How to address this:

  • Your CV must clearly trace the professional journey that makes you the right candidate for this specific role
  • Your cover letter should explain how your skills, particularly those developed in Bangladesh, are relevant to what the UK employer needs
  • The employer's CoS description of the role must accurately reflect a real operational need

If a caseworker invites you to an interview, this is the issue they are probing.

3. Document Authenticity Concerns

UKVI operates specialist teams that verify Bangladeshi documents. Common authenticity failures include:

  • Discrepancies between the name, date of birth, or parents' names on the NID, passport, and educational certificates — even minor spelling differences
  • Work experience certificates that appear standardized or templated across multiple applicants from the same company
  • University MOI letters that do not match records when UKVI contacts the institution
  • Bank statements with inconsistent formatting or unusual transaction patterns

The consequence of a document fraud finding is not just a refusal. Under paragraph 9.7.1 of the Immigration Rules, a finding of misrepresentation — even unintentional — results in a 10-year ban. This ends future applications to the UK and can affect Canada, Australia, and the US as well.

Mitigation: Only submit original, verified documents. If you are using a work experience certificate from a previous employer, include their company website, the contact details of the signatory, and a LinkedIn profile for verification. Do not use any document that has been altered or "improved" by an agent.

4. Financial Evidence Problems

Falling below the required maintenance fund (£1,270 for a solo applicant) for even one day during the 28-day window is an automatic refusal. UKVI also frequently flags Bangladeshi bank statements for sudden large deposits immediately before the window.

Accepted banks matter. If your statement comes from South East Bank, it will be rejected regardless of the balance. Statements from unapproved institutions are treated as invalid financial evidence.

5. Credibility Interview Performance

UKVI has the power to call applicants for a credibility interview before deciding the application. Bangladeshi applicants in the care and technology sectors are called more frequently than average.

Common interview questions:

  • Describe the job you have been offered in detail
  • What does your UK employer's business do and who are their main clients?
  • How did the recruitment process work — did you use a recruiter, and did anyone approach you first?
  • Have you paid anyone to secure this job offer?

Red flags that interviewers are trained to detect:

  • Memorized, word-for-word answers that suggest coaching
  • Inability to describe specific job duties beyond the job title
  • Inconsistencies with what is stated on the application form
  • Any admission that an agent arranged the job or was paid for the CoS

Preparation: Research the employer's business properly. Know their address, their client profile, their size, and what your role will involve day-to-day. Be able to describe your own recruitment journey authentically and in your own words.

If You Are Refused

A refusal is not always permanent. You can apply again with a stronger application addressing the refusal grounds. However, a refusal based on document fraud or misrepresentation results in a 10-year ban that cannot be overcome by reapplication.

Before reapplying, understand the exact basis for refusal from the refusal letter. Each refusal reason corresponds to a specific Immigration Rule reference. The application that follows must directly address that specific rule.

For complex refusals — particularly those involving credibility findings — legal advice from a regulated OISC immigration adviser is worth the cost.
