IELTS for UKVI Bangladesh vs PTE Academic — Which Test to Take

IELTS for UKVI Bangladesh vs PTE Academic — Which Test to Take

You must take a test designated "for UKVI." A standard IELTS Academic or General Training — even with a perfect 9.0 — will result in automatic visa refusal. This is the single most expensive mistake a Bangladeshi applicant can make at the English language stage.

Both IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI satisfy the requirement equally. The Home Office does not prefer one over the other. The choice comes down to timing, availability, and your preparation.

IELTS for UKVI in Bangladesh

Test centres: Dhaka (Gulshan, Banani, Uttara, Dhanmondi), Chittagong, Sylhet

Cost: Approximately BDT 27,450

Format: Computer-delivered (available multiple times per week). Paper-based is being phased out by June 27, 2026.

Results: 3 to 5 days for computer-based

Minimum for B1: 4.0 in each band (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking)

One Skill Retake: If you miss B1 in only one module by a narrow margin, you can retake just that module for BDT 14,175 to 18,700 instead of the entire test. This is available within 60 days of your original test.

PTE Academic UKVI in Bangladesh

Test centres: Dhaka, Chittagong

Cost: BDT 25,000 to 28,000

Results: Typically within 48 hours

Security: Palm-vein biometric scanning at test centres

Which Should You Choose?

Choose PTE if: You need results quickly. PTE delivers scores in 48 hours versus 3 to 5 days for IELTS. If your CoS window is tight and every day counts, PTE buys you time.

Choose IELTS if: You have already prepared for the IELTS format and are comfortable with it. Switching formats under pressure introduces unnecessary risk.

Choose either if: Time is not critical. Both are accepted equally.

The Medium of Instruction Alternative

If your degree was taught entirely in English, you may skip the test entirely by obtaining a Qualification and Language Service (QLS) statement from Ecctis confirming both your degree equivalence and English MOI.

Universities where MOI claims are commonly accepted: BUET (all engineering), IBA at the University of Dhaka, North South University, BRAC University.

The risk: UKVI caseworkers scrutinise MOI claims from Bangladesh more heavily than from most countries. If your degree is more than five years old, from a newer private institution, or includes courses taught in Bangla, the claim may fail.

The financial calculation: QLS costs £210 (approximately BDT 31,500). IELTS for UKVI costs BDT 27,450. If there is any doubt about whether MOI will work, the test is a better investment — you control the timeline and the outcome.

The Bangladesh to UK Skilled Worker Guide includes the complete English language decision tree, the Ecctis PSV strategy for Bangladeshi universities, and the University Registrar pre-notification template that prevents the 20-day verification timeout.
