888 Visa Processing Time: How Long Does Permanent Residency Take?

888 Visa Processing Time: How Long Does Permanent Residency Take?

You've been on your 188 for two or more years. You've run the business, hit the turnover threshold, kept records, stayed in the state. You're ready to lodge the 888. And then you find out the wait for a decision could be nearly four years.

Current processing times for the Subclass 888 Business Innovation and Investment (Resident) visa run between 19 and 41 months. That's not a typo. For the higher-complexity streams — particularly 888B (Investor) and 888C (Significant Investor) — the upper end of that range reflects the genuine reality of the current queue.

Understanding why the waits are so long, what affects your position in the queue, and how to plan your life around an uncertain timeline is important for every 888 applicant.

Current Processing Times by Stream

The Department of Home Affairs publishes global visa processing times, updated monthly. As of 2026, the Subclass 888 streams show:

888A (Business Innovation): Approximately 19 to 28 months for most applications (50th to 75th percentile). Some complex cases and those with additional information requests have extended to 41 months or beyond.

888B (Investor): Processing is generally in the 25 to 41 month range for most applicants. Investment compliance verification adds complexity — the Department needs to confirm the AUD 2.5 million investment was maintained correctly throughout the provisional period.

888C (Significant Investor): Similar to 888B or longer. CIF investment verification, with the requirement to confirm that fund allocations met the 20/30/50 split and that the 30-day reinvestment rule was observed across years of transactions, is a detailed process.

888E (Entrepreneur): Processing varies considerably depending on the complexity of the commercialisation evidence and whether the Department requests additional information about the funded business's progress.

These are estimated times for straightforward applications without requests for additional information. If the Department identifies any inconsistencies in your evidence — or if there are questions about your business operation, turnover, or residency — you should add months to these estimates.

Why the Queue Is So Long

The 888 backlog reflects several compounding factors:

Legacy volume from the BIIP's peak years: The Business Innovation and Investment Program was running at significant volume for the decade before it closed in July 2024. Many 188 holders from 2019-2024 are now entering the 888 lodgement window, creating a substantial queue.

Evidence complexity: Each 888 application requires the Department to verify financial records, business operations, investment compliance, and residency conditions — often across multiple financial years. This is not a form-check exercise; it involves substantive document review.

Staff allocation: Business visa processing competes for departmental resources with the higher-volume skilled migration streams. Business visa applications don't represent the largest volume on DHA's plate.

Requests for Additional Information (RAIs): A significant proportion of 888 applications receive a Request for Additional Information at some point during processing. Each RAI effectively pauses the clock and adds weeks to months depending on how quickly the applicant can respond and how long it takes the Department to review the additional material.

Bridging Visas and Your Status During Processing

If your 188 visa expires while your 888 application is being processed, you will automatically be granted a Bridging Visa A (BVA). This allows you to remain in Australia lawfully throughout processing.

A BVA has similar work and travel rights to the 188 for most purposes, but there are differences worth understanding:

  • If you travel outside Australia while on a BVA, you will need to obtain a Bridging Visa B (BVB) in advance if you want to re-enter. Failing to do this means you cannot return to Australia until a decision is made or you withdraw your application.
  • The BVA does not have all the same conditions as the 188 — some state nomination conditions that applied to the 188 may not continue through the BVA period.

Managing your travel carefully during the processing period is important, particularly if your 888 is already in the queue and you have international commitments.

Can You Speed Up Processing?

The Department of Home Affairs does not have a premium processing or priority queue for 888 applications in the same way some other countries' visa systems do. Some options that may indirectly reduce delays:

Lodge a complete application. Incomplete applications almost always receive RAIs, which adds months. Ensuring every piece of evidence is included and clearly labelled at lodgement — using the Department's document naming conventions — reduces the probability of additional information requests.

Respond to RAIs promptly. When the Department requests additional information, the response window is typically 28 days. Responding within the first week of receiving the request, with a complete and well-organised response, returns your file to active review faster.

Ministerial intervention is not a realistic option. For most 888 applicants, there is no legitimate pathway to have a case prioritised outside the normal queue unless there are exceptional circumstances (serious medical issues, etc.).

Planning Your Life Around the Wait

The most practical advice for 888 applicants facing a 19 to 41 month wait is to plan as if the upper end of that range applies to you.

This means:

  • Maintaining your business or investments throughout the full provisional and bridging visa period, not just until you lodge
  • Keeping your Australian presence consistent — the Department can and does check entry/exit records as part of the final assessment
  • Not assuming your 888 will be decided before any particular milestone (children starting school, property purchases, business decisions that depend on PR status)
  • Building clear financial records throughout — having organised, year-by-year documentation ready means you can respond to RAIs quickly

The Australia Business Innovation Visa (188) Guide includes a timeline planning section for the 888 lodgement, covering what to prepare in the final months before you lodge and how to structure your evidence package to minimise the probability of delays.
