Australia Student Visa Checklist 2026: Every Document You Need for Subclass 500
The Department of Home Affairs does not tell you what a refusal will cost before you lodge. The non-refundable visa application fee is AUD $1,600 to $2,000. The Genuine Student responses are locked at lodgement. Financial documents submitted with missing evidence cannot be added after the fact once the officer has made their decision.
This checklist covers every document category required for a Subclass 500 student visa application. For applicants from Evidence Level 3 countries (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka), the standards are applied more stringently — this list includes the documentary depth expected of Level 3 applicants, not the minimal version that might satisfy a low-risk application.
1. Identity Documents
- Passport: Valid for the full duration of your proposed study period, plus a minimum of six months beyond. Provide all pages including blank pages and the biographical data page.
- Previous passports: If you hold or have held prior passports, include copies of all biographical pages and any visas or entry stamps relevant to prior international travel.
- National identity card: If your country issues a biometric national ID separate from your passport, include a copy.
- Name change documents: If your current name differs from any prior document (marriage certificate, legal name change declaration, deed poll).
2. Enrollment Documents
- Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE): The CoE number issued by your CRICOS-registered institution through PRISMS. This is mandatory — no CoE, no application.
- Offer letter or acceptance letter: The institution's official offer, showing the course name, CRICOS course code, duration, and tuition fee schedule.
- Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE): For applications submitted through ImmiAccount, the CoE is referenced electronically. Ensure the CoE status in PRISMS is "Accepted" before lodging.
3. Genuine Student Responses
These are answered within the ImmiAccount form, not uploaded separately. Prepare your responses before you begin the online application, because the form does not allow for drafting — once you start the application, you need your responses ready.
Four structured responses of up to 150 words each:
- Your current circumstances in your home country (family, employment, economic situation, community ties)
- Why this specific course at this specific Australian institution
- How this qualification benefits your career trajectory
- Any other relevant information (study gaps, prior refusals, unique circumstances)
Do not use AI to write these responses. Write them yourself, in your own voice, at your own English level. Inconsistency between GS language and your demonstrated IELTS score is a refusal trigger.

4. English Language Evidence
- IELTS Academic test results sheet: Showing overall band score and all four individual band scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Minimum 6.0 overall for higher education.
- Alternatively: PTE Academic score report, TOEFL iBT score report, Cambridge CAE/CPE result, or OET results — showing scores equivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall.
If your score is below the threshold for your principal course but above the ELICOS threshold (5.0), and you are enrolling in an English language course before your principal course, ensure your CoE reflects this packaged pathway.
5. Financial Capacity Evidence
This is the most document-intensive category for Level 3 country applicants.
For personal funds:
- Bank statements covering the last three to six months showing a consistent balance at or above the required amount (AUD $29,710 living costs + first-year tuition + AUD $2,500 travel)
- Bank statements must show the account holder's name, bank name, account number, and the statement period clearly
- Evidence of how the funds were accumulated (salary slips, investment returns, property sale proceeds)
For family-sponsored applicants:
- Sponsor's bank statements (same format as above) covering three to six months
- Sponsor's employment documents: employment letter confirming position, salary, and tenure; recent payslips; most recent tax assessment or Form 16
- If self-employed or business owner: two years of business income tax returns, business registration certificate, business bank statements
- Statutory declaration or sponsor letter confirming the financial sponsorship relationship and its scope
For scholarship holders:
- Official scholarship award letter showing the value of the scholarship and what costs it covers (tuition and/or living costs)
- If the scholarship covers only tuition: personal or sponsor funds for living costs must still be demonstrated
Documents to avoid:
- Bank statements with unexplained large deposits in the 30 to 60 days before lodgement
- Borrowed funds or fixed deposits that were opened recently (they exist but have not grown organically)
6. Academic and Employment History
- Educational transcripts: Transcripts for all prior qualifications, with certified English translations if not in English
- Degree certificates: Copies of all degree or diploma certificates
- Work experience evidence: Employment letters, payslips, and reference letters for any employment history cited in your GS responses or that provides relevant context for your course choice
- Professional or trade licenses: If applicable to your chosen course
7. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
- OSHC policy document or certificate: Showing coverage starting from your visa application date or visa start date, covering the full duration of your visa grant period. Lapsed OSHC is a visa condition breach.
- Acceptable providers: Allianz, Bupa, CBHS International Health, Medibank, nib OSHC, and others approved by Home Affairs
- Single policies, couple policies, and family policies are available — ensure the level covers all visa applicants
8. Character Evidence (If Required)
- Police clearance certificates: From any country in which you have lived for 12 or more months over the past 10 years. Required if you are 16 or older.
- For Indian applicants: clearance from the appropriate authority in each state you have resided in
9. Additional Documents for Specific Circumstances
- Prior visa refusal declaration: Any prior refusal for any Australian visa must be declared. Not declaring a prior refusal triggers PIC 4020 — potential three-year ban.
- Medical examination results (if requested): Some applicants are required to complete a medical exam before visa grant. This is notified by the Department during processing, not always upfront.
- Parental consent: For applicants under 18
Before You Lodge
- Review your financial documents for any red flags (unexplained deposits, thin trading history, accounts opened recently)
- Read your GS responses for consistency with your submitted documents
- Confirm your CoE is active in PRISMS
- Confirm your OSHC is purchased and covers the correct period
- Check your English test scores are at or above the minimum for your course level
