How to Migrate to Australia from Kenya: The Complete 2025-2026 Guide

How to Migrate to Australia from Kenya: The Complete 2025-2026 Guide

Kenya has one of the highest rates of skilled-migrant success in the Australian General Skilled Migration program. Not because the system is easy — it is not — but because Kenyan professionals hold two natural advantages that matter most: English-medium education and degrees from institutions that Australian assessors recognize. Perth alone hosts 28.4% of Kenya's Australia-born community, drawn by mining and engineering contracts. Melbourne and Sydney follow close behind, with nurses, developers, and accountants driving the corridor.

This guide maps the full process from Nairobi to Australian permanent residency, including the bits most generic guides skip — the eCitizen portal, the IOM clinic in Gigiri, paying the visa fee via M-Pesa GlobalPay, and which English score level is worth targeting.

The Three Visa Pathways That Actually Matter

The Australian General Skilled Migration (GSM) program covers three visa subclasses. Each rewards the same points test but offers different benefits.

Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent. No employer, no state — you live and work anywhere in Australia. Planning levels for 2023-24 were around 30,375 places, but the thresholds are increasingly reserved for healthcare workers and teachers scoring well above 90 points. Most Kenyan IT professionals and engineers cannot compete here without state nomination adding extra points.

Subclass 190 — State Nominated. A state or territory nominates you, which adds 5 bonus points to your score. In return, you commit to living in that state for at least two years. NSW and WA run the most active programs for the occupations where Kenyans tend to cluster: nursing, software engineering, civil engineering, and accounting.

Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (Provisional). This is a provisional visa — it leads to permanent residency after three years of regional living and work. The trade-off is worth it for many: 491 applicants receive a 15-point bonus, which can be the single factor that makes an otherwise borderline profile competitive. WA and Queensland allocate significant 491 places to Kenyan professionals.

For most Kenyan applicants, the practical question is not "189 or 190" — it is "190 or 491." The regional bonus turns a 75-point profile into a 90-point profile overnight.

The Points Test: Where Your Application Wins or Loses

You need 65 points minimum to lodge an Expression of Interest. But 65 points rarely leads to an invitation. The competitive thresholds in 2024-2026 are:

  • Healthcare professionals: 65-75 points (highly prioritized by states)
  • Engineers: 85-90 points
  • IT professionals: 90-95 points
  • Accountants: 95-100 points

A 30-year-old Kenyan software engineer with a bachelor's degree and five years of experience starts at 55 points: 30 (age) + 15 (degree) + 10 (work experience). That profile needs "Superior English" to even reach 75 points — and still needs state nomination or regional to reach a competitive level.

This is why the English test is the single highest-leverage step in your application. "Proficient English" (PTE 65, IELTS 7.0) earns 10 points. "Superior English" (PTE 79 with a Speaking score of 88, IELTS 8.0 in every band) earns 20 points. That 10-point gap is equivalent to eight years of additional overseas work experience. Kenyan professionals who nail the English test shift their profiles dramatically.

If you want to map your current score before going further, the Kenya → Australia Skilled Migration Guide includes a full points-maximization worksheet built around the specific categories most Kenyan applicants claim.

Step 1: Identify Your Occupation and Assessing Body

Before everything else, confirm that your occupation is on an eligible Australian occupation list and identify which body assesses your qualifications.

The Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) governs Subclass 189, 190, and 491 eligibility. The Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) covers 190 and 491 only. States also publish their own lists — NSW has a Priority Occupation List, and WA runs the Skilled Nominated Migration Program (SNMP) with its own Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 categories.

The main assessing bodies for Kenyan professionals:

  • ICT (Software engineers, systems analysts, developers): Australian Computer Society (ACS) — AUD 1,498 as of late 2025
  • Engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical): Engineers Australia (EA) — requires a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) for most Kenyan university graduates since Kenya's EBK holds only provisional Washington Accord status
  • Nursing: ANMAC — requires the Nursing Council of Kenya to send verification directly from an official @nck.go.ke email address
  • Accounting (ICPAK members): CPA Australia — streamlined pathway for full ICPAK members
  • Teaching: AITSL — demands IELTS 8.0 Speaking and Listening specifically

Step 2: English Test

Target Superior English. PTE Academic is the preferred choice for 85% of Kenyan migrants because results arrive within 48 hours and the AI-based speaking assessment does not penalize Kenyan accents the way a human examiner occasionally might.

The new 2025 PTE thresholds are more granular than the old flat-79 rule. Superior English now requires a Speaking score of 88 — the hardest component. Kenyan speakers sometimes pick up Sheng intonation patterns that the AI does not score favorably. The technique that works is "chunking": grouping words into complete academic phrases at a consistent oral pace, with no self-corrections or filler sounds. Practice specifically for the "Describe Image" and "Re-tell Lecture" tasks, where pacing and fluency are directly measured.

IELTS requires 8.0 in every band simultaneously — harder to achieve on one sitting. PTE allows retesting specific components. Test centers for PTE in Nairobi include Computer Pride Ltd. Fee: approximately USD 225 (roughly KES 30,000-35,000 depending on the exchange rate).

Step 3: Skills Assessment

Lodge your skills assessment as early as possible — wait times run 2 to 4 months depending on the body and workload.

For ACS: provide certified transcripts, degree certificate, and a detailed work experience record. If you have an ICT-adjacent degree (commerce, mathematics) rather than a straight CS degree, use the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway with two detailed project reports. Be aware that ACS deducts two years from your post-degree experience to account for "entry-level" work — a developer who graduated in 2021 and started the ACS process in 2026 effectively has about three years of assessable experience, not five.

For Engineers Australia: most Kenyan graduates need a full CDR. Write three Career Episodes in first person, describing specific projects you worked on in Kenya — the Nairobi Expressway, a Safaricom infrastructure rollout, a water treatment plant in the rift valley. EA is strict about detecting AI-generated content; the episodes must be technical, specific, and demonstrably yours.

Step 4: Expression of Interest via SkillSelect

Once you have a positive skills assessment and an English result, you can submit your EOI through SkillSelect — the Australian government's online points-based ranking system. Your EOI ranks you against all other applicants in the same occupation. States draw from this pool to issue nominations.

For state nomination, you apply separately to the relevant state program. Some states (NSW, WA) require additional documentation and occasionally interview applicants by phone or video before nominating.

Step 5: After the Invitation — Documents and Medical

Do not get your police clearance or medical done before receiving an invitation — these documents have expiry windows. Once invited, you have 60 days to lodge the full visa application.

Police clearance (DCI Certificate of Good Conduct): Apply via the eCitizen portal. Fee: KES 1,050. You must attend in person for fingerprinting at DCI HQ on Kiambu Road or at a Huduma Centre (City Square, GPO, or Eastleigh). The certificate downloads from eCitizen once processed.

Medical examination: Done at the IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre at 78 United Nations Crescent, Gigiri. Book online using your HAP ID. Fees range from USD 110 for children under two to USD 185 for adults 15 and over, plus USD 225 for healthcare workers. If your chest X-ray shows any irregularity, expect sputum culture testing — that process takes 8 to 10 weeks. Kenya's moderate TB prevalence means this is a real risk, not a theoretical one.

Visa payment: The Subclass 190 fee is AUD 4,640 (approximately KES 410,000). The easiest payment method for Kenyans is the M-Pesa GlobalPay Virtual Visa Card, activated through the M-Pesa app. Daily limit is KES 300,000, so fees above that threshold require splitting across two days or using a second card. The GlobalPay card charges a 3.5% forex markup.

The Timeline

A realistic Kenya-to-Australia skilled visa timeline runs 15 to 18 months:

  • Months 1-2: Request transcripts from your university and initiate skills assessment
  • Months 2-3: Sit the English test, targeting Superior (PTE 79 with Speaking 88)
  • Months 3-6: Skills assessment processing (ACS, EA, ANMAC, CPA Australia)
  • Month 7: Submit EOI via SkillSelect; apply for state nomination
  • Months 8-14: Wait for invitation; prepare DCI and medical only after invitation arrives
  • Months 15-18: Lodge visa application, respond to any requests for information

The full document preparation checklist — covering identity, English, education, employment evidence, character, and health — is detailed in the Kenya → Australia Skilled Migration Guide, which also walks through what to do when you have Gulf work experience that needs Saudi or UAE police clearance certificates.

What Makes Kenyans Competitive

The 2021 Census counted 22,348 Kenyan-born people in Australia — a 26% increase from 2016. The median age is 34, which sits right in the prime points-earning range (25-32 earns 30 points; 33-39 earns 25 points). Kenyan professionals score higher on English tests on average than comparable applicants from the Indian subcontinent, partly because English is the medium of instruction through secondary school and university, not just a test subject.

The institutions Australian assessors recognize are well-known: University of Nairobi, JKUAT, Strathmore, Kenyatta University. Four-year degrees from these map to AQF Level 7 for most assessment bodies. The challenge is not whether your degree is recognized — it usually is — but whether your work history is documented in ways Australian assessors accept. M-Pesa salary payments, informal employer references, and short-tenure early-career roles all need careful handling.

That is the core gap the guide closes: the technical documentation strategies, not the general overview.
