PTE Describe Image Template That Actually Works for 79+

The Describe Image task trips up Indian PTE takers who try to analyze the graphic in real time and end up stumbling over their words. The PTE AI does not care about deep analytical insight — it scores Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, and Content independently. A formulaic response delivered without hesitation will outscore a brilliant analysis filled with pauses. Here are the templates, organized by image type.

The Universal 5-Sentence Framework

Every Describe Image response should follow this structure, regardless of image type:

1. Introduction: What the image shows
2. Key observation: The most significant data point
3. Secondary observation: A trend, comparison, or second notable point
4. Contrast or exception: Something that stands out differently
5. Conclusion: Overall summary in one sentence

Target 35-40 seconds total. Going under 25 seconds leaves content points on the table. Going over 40 seconds means you are rambling and likely introducing fluency errors.

Bar Chart Template

"This bar chart presents [topic] across [categories/time periods]. The highest value is observed for [category] at [number/percentage], while the lowest is [category] at [number]. We can see that [trend — increasing/decreasing/stable]. Notably, [one comparison or exception]. Overall, [topic] shows [general pattern]."

Example: "This bar chart presents average salaries across Australian states. The highest value is observed for Western Australia at 95,000 dollars, while the lowest is Tasmania at 72,000. We can see that salaries in mining-dominant states are consistently higher. Notably, Victoria and New South Wales show similar figures despite different industry compositions. Overall, salaries show a significant regional variation across Australia."

Line Graph Template

"This line graph illustrates [topic] from [start year] to [end year]. The most notable trend is [rising/declining/fluctuating pattern] over the period. [Category] started at [value] and reached [value] by [end year]. In contrast, [second line or exception] shows [different pattern]. Overall, the data indicates [summary of direction]."

Pie Chart Template

"This pie chart displays the distribution of [topic]. The largest segment is [category] at [percentage], which accounts for nearly [fraction] of the total. The second largest is [category] at [percentage]. [Smallest category] represents only [percentage], indicating [brief interpretation]. Overall, [category] dominates the distribution."

Process Diagram / Map Template

"This image describes [process/location]. The process begins with [first step] and proceeds through [number] stages. After [step], [next step] occurs, leading to [outcome]. A key feature is [notable element]. Overall, [summary of the process/location]."

Timing and Practice Strategy

During the 25-second preparation window:

1. Identify the image type (3 seconds)
2. Find the highest and lowest values (5 seconds)
3. Identify one trend and one exception (7 seconds)
4. Mentally slot data into your template (10 seconds)

Practice with a timer. Record yourself and listen for pauses, "um," "uh," or restarts — each one costs Oral Fluency points. The goal is zero dead air. If you forget a number mid-sentence, approximate it ("approximately 80 percent") rather than pausing to look at the image again.

The Template Trap to Avoid

Do not use the same opening phrase for every image. The AI tracks vocabulary range. Rotate between "This image shows," "This bar chart presents," "This graph illustrates," and "This diagram describes." Same structure, different vocabulary signals.
