Skills Assessment Australia: What Every International Student Needs to Know
You graduated. Your 485 visa is running. Your friends are asking about PR timelines. Then someone in a Facebook group mentions a "skills assessment," and you realise you have no idea what it is, who does it, or when you needed to have started it. This is a common and expensive moment of surprise for international graduates in Australia — because the skills assessment is not the same as your degree, and it does not happen automatically.
A formal migration skills assessment is the mandatory gateway to every points-tested skilled visa (189, 190, 491) and most employer-sponsored pathways (482, 186). Without a positive assessment, you cannot submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect, and you cannot receive a state nomination invitation. Understanding the mechanics early — ideally during your final year of study — is one of the highest-leverage moves an international student can make.
What a Skills Assessment Actually Is
A migration skills assessment is an evaluation conducted by a government-recognised industry body that confirms your qualifications and work experience meet the Australian standard for a specific ANZSCO occupation code. It is separate from the academic assessment your university already performed. The assessing body is looking at your entire profile: degree content, whether it matches the job tasks of your nominated ANZSCO role, and whether your work experience is skilled and relevant.
The critical point: if your assessment comes back negative, you cannot nominate that occupation for any skilled visa. If you have already lodged an expensive visa application under an occupation that then gets refused assessment, the fees are non-refundable.
Which Body Assesses Your Occupation
Australia does not have a single assessing authority. Each broad occupational domain has its own body:
Australian Computer Society (ACS) — information technology professionals. The Post Australian Study pathway (for graduates of Australian institutions) costs AUD $1,136. A general assessment costs AUD $1,498. The ACS is known for experience-deduction rules: offshore work experience in closely related roles may be assessed at a reduced time credit.
Engineers Australia (EA) — engineering disciplines. An assessment of an Australian engineering qualification alone costs AUD $335.50. If you need work experience assessed alongside your qualification to claim employment points, the fee rises to AUD $792. EA uses the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR), a structured written submission demonstrating engineering competency against three career episodes.
VETASSESS — the broadest assessing body, covering general professional occupations (accountants in some streams, teachers, social workers, and many others) and trade occupations. A full professional assessment is AUD $1,096. Trade occupation assessments involve a documentary evidence stage (AUD $450) followed by a mandatory technical interview or practical test (AUD $1,000), pushing total costs above AUD $2,000.
Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) — registered nurses and midwives. A full skills assessment costs AUD $595. If you already hold AHPRA registration as a nurse, a Modified Skills Assessment is available for AUD $395. ANMAC enforces its own English language standards — PTE 66 minimum across all bands — independently of the general visa requirements.
CPA Australia — accounting and finance professionals. The combined onshore assessment covering both academic qualification and employment costs AUD $620.
Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) — trade occupations not covered by VETASSESS, including carpentry, plumbing, and automotive mechanics.
When to Start Your Assessment
The most important timing rule: start your skills assessment during your final semester of study, not after graduation.
Assessment processes take time. ACS standard processing runs six to eight weeks but can extend. Engineers Australia CDR assessments take similar timeframes, and VETASSESS professional assessments have been known to run three months in high-demand periods. ANMAC has its own queue.
Your 485 visa application must be lodged within six months of your course completion date — not your graduation ceremony, but the date your institution confirmed you met academic requirements. If you spend three months of that window waiting for a skills assessment, you have already consumed half your lodgement buffer.
Furthermore, for the Post-Vocational Education Work stream of the 485 visa (for diploma and trade graduates), you are required to provide proof that you have applied for a skills assessment at the time of lodging the 485 application. This is a mandatory condition, not a recommendation.

What Students Get Wrong
Assuming their degree covers everything: Your Australian degree is strong evidence, but the assessing body evaluates whether your specific course content maps to the tasks in your ANZSCO occupation description. A Bachelor of IT majoring in data science does not automatically satisfy an ACS assessment for Software Engineer (ANZSCO 261313). Check the ANZSCO task list before you nominate.
Not tracking work experience from day one: You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight on your student visa. That work counts — but only if it is skilled, relevant, and properly documented. Start keeping payslips, employment contracts, and reference letters from your first relevant job in Australia.
Leaving assessment until after the 485 is granted: The 485 gives you two to three years. Many students treat the first year as a work experience accumulation period before starting the assessment. Given processing times and the eventual requirement to have a positive assessment before lodging any PR visa, starting in year one of your 485 is the safer approach.
The Post-Australian-Study Advantage
Most assessing bodies offer a separate, faster, and sometimes cheaper pathway for graduates of Australian institutions. ACS's Post Australian Study pathway is a clear example. This pathway recognises that you have already been assessed by an Australian university and focuses primarily on mapping your course to your nominated ANZSCO code.
If you are an Australian graduate and you are applying through the standard general pathway instead of the post-study pathway, you may be paying more and waiting longer unnecessarily. Always check whether your assessing body has an Australian graduate stream.
