VETASSESS Employment Verification for Pakistani Applicants: What You Must Prove

VETASSESS rejected your skills assessment because your salary was paid in cash. You didn't know this was a problem until it was too late — and the processing fee is non-refundable. This is one of the most predictable mistakes Pakistani professionals make, and it's entirely avoidable if you understand exactly what VETASSESS is looking for.

What VETASSESS Is Actually Assessing

VETASSESS handles skills assessments for general professional occupations — accountants, HR managers, marketing professionals, administrators, and a long list of technical and management roles. Unlike the Australian Computer Society (ACS) or Engineers Australia, VETASSESS doesn't just verify your qualifications. It spends considerable time verifying that your employment was real, sustained, and at a professional level that matches your nominated ANZSCO occupation.

The core challenge for Pakistani applicants is that VETASSESS operates on Australian evidentiary assumptions. Australia has a highly formalized payroll system with digital salary transfers and government tax records. Pakistan's private sector — particularly the SME segment — does not always work that way.

The Two-Evidence Rule

VETASSESS requires a minimum of two independent forms of financial evidence for every year of employment you claim. This isn't a bureaucratic nicety. The assessment body has seen enough fraudulent employment letters from South Asia that it treats unverified documentation with significant skepticism.

Acceptable forms of financial evidence include:

  • Tax assessment notices from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR): Your annual income tax returns showing your employer and salary level are the gold standard. If you filed returns while employed, retrieve these immediately.
  • Bank statements showing regular salary credits: These must show a consistent monthly credit from your employer's account. Irregular deposits or a pattern of large lump-sum transfers will trigger scrutiny.
  • Provident Fund contribution statements: If your employer registered you with EOBI (Employees' Old-Age Benefits Institution) or made provident fund contributions, these records constitute strong third-party evidence.
  • Pay slips bearing official stamps: Printed pay slips with the company's official stamp, issued monthly, are useful supporting documents — but VETASSESS views these alone as insufficient because they are too easy to fabricate.
  • Social Security contribution records: EOBI registration records showing employer contributions carry weight because they're issued by a government body.

The Cash Salary Problem

Thousands of Pakistani professionals — particularly those who worked in small businesses, family enterprises, or the informal tech sector — received cash salaries or salary via check without corresponding digital bank records. If this describes your employment history, you face a real documentation challenge.

VETASSESS is explicit in its Evidence Guide: if you were paid in cash, you must build an exceptionally strong "paper trail" around that employment. This means:

  1. Internal company salary registers — ledger pages showing your name, designation, and monthly payment, signed and stamped by management
  2. Statutory declarations — affidavits from your employer or a senior colleague attesting to your employment, notarized and ideally attested by a relevant authority
  3. FBR tax records cross-referencing — even if your tax was filed by your employer on your behalf, the FBR employer database should show registered employees

The critical reality is that the "third-party" element must be strong. A statutory declaration from your employer is weak evidence if it stands alone. It becomes far more credible when combined with FBR records showing that the company existed, was registered, and was filing corporate taxes during the period you claim to have worked there.

The VETASSESS "Duties" Problem

Even if your financial evidence is solid, a second common failure point for Pakistani applicants is the mismatch between job title and actual duties. VETASSESS assesses your occupation against the ANZSCO description — not your job title. An "Operations Manager" at a Lahore-based logistics firm may have spent 60% of their time on tasks that fall under a lower-skill ANZSCO code.

Your employment letters must be drafted to reflect the ANZSCO description of your nominated occupation. Ask your current or former employer to detail your duties in terms that map to the official ANZSCO definition. A letter that simply states "Mr. Ahmed was employed as Marketing Manager from 2018-2022" gives VETASSESS nothing to work with. A letter that describes specific responsibilities — budget ownership, staff management, campaign strategy, vendor contracts — is what the assessors actually need.

Building Your Evidence Package

For a five-year employment history requiring VETASSESS verification, a well-prepared Pakistani applicant should compile:

Year Primary Evidence Supporting Evidence
Each year Bank statement showing salary credits FBR tax filing for that year
Each year Pay slips (monthly, stamped) EOBI contribution statements (if applicable)
Total period Detailed employment reference letter Company registration certificate / tax NTN

If you have gaps in this evidence — particularly for early career years where records no longer exist — be transparent in your application. VETASSESS allows applicants to submit a statutory declaration explaining why certain evidence is unavailable, but you must also provide the strongest alternative evidence possible.

Before You Lodge

Run a pre-assessment reality check before submitting to VETASSESS. Ask yourself: for every year I'm claiming, can I produce at least two independent financial documents that a third party would recognize as credible? If the answer is no for any period, address it before lodging — either by excluding that period from your claim, obtaining missing documents from FBR or EOBI, or strengthening the supporting declaration evidence.

VETASSESS processing takes 3 to 5 months on average and costs around AUD 900 to 1,200 depending on the pathway. A negative outcome doesn't just cost you the fee — it delays your entire migration timeline by months and potentially affects your points calculation if you're close to an age threshold.

The Pakistan → Australia Skilled Migration Guide covers the VETASSESS documentation process in detail alongside HEC attestation, police clearance, and the full points calculation for your occupation — the combined paperwork that separates a competitive EOI from one that never gets invited.
