The 186 vs. 190 Decision

482 holders have an additional permanent pathway that 485 holders don't: the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) in the Direct Entry stream or the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream. After three years on a 482 in the Medium-term stream, your employer can nominate you for a 186 without you needing to go through the competitive SkillSelect points process at all.

Target Queensland if you have 9 months to build the residency. Queensland's quota jumped from 600 to 1,850 places. Applicants who move to Queensland and spend nine months building the required residency have access to the largest nomination pool in the country relative to the competition density outside the east coast capitals.

Use the SA offshore stream if you're overseas. SA is issuing offshore nominations actively. If you're overseas with a qualifying occupation and three years of skilled experience, SA's offshore stream has shorter effective wait times than most onshore queues for the same occupation.

Maximize your points before lodging. A single IELTS resit from 7.0 to 8.0 is worth 10 additional points. At 85 points instead of 75, the number of states that will select you expands significantly and your wait time within queues shortens.
