Temporary Graduate Visa to PR Australia: Your Fastest Route After a 485

The Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) gives international graduates 2 to 4 years (or longer for some) to work in Australia after completing their degree. It is a valuable window — but it has an end date. If you want to stay permanently, you need a plan in place before that window closes.

This post is for onshore graduates currently on a 485 who are working out how to convert that temporary status into permanent residency.

What You Have That Offshore Applicants Do Not

Being onshore on a 485 gives you several structural advantages for the 189 pathway:

Australian work experience: Every year you work in your nominated skilled occupation in Australia adds to your skilled employment points — at a higher rate than overseas experience. Australian experience at 1–2 years is worth 5 points; 3–4 years is 10 points; 5–7 years is 15 points; 8+ years is 20 points. Most 485 holders have at least 1 to 2 years of work experience accumulating during their visa, and possibly a further 2 years if they started working during their studies on their Student 500 visa (though study period work cannot be counted under the 20-hour per week minimum).

Australian Study Requirement: If you completed your degree at an Australian institution over at least 2 academic years (92 weeks) conducted in English, you claim 5 bonus points for the Australian Study Requirement. This is essentially free points for anyone who studied at an Australian institution — you just need to document it correctly.

Regional Study bonus: If your Australian institution was in a designated regional area (outside the major metro areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth), you claim an additional 5 points on top of the Australian Study Requirement. Charles Sturt University, University of Wollongong, University of Tasmania, Federation University, and many others qualify.

Professional Year eligibility: Onshore graduates in Accounting, IT, and Engineering can complete a Professional Year Program — a 44–52 week program that earns 5 points. This is only available to those who studied in Australia.

The Typical Points Profile for a 485 Holder

Take a 27-year-old Indian software engineer, 2 years into their 485 after completing a 2-year Master's at an Australian university:

This profile — built on a combination of Australian study, local work experience, Superior English, and NAATI CCL — can reach a competitive score for Tier 4 IT occupations in the current round environment. The same person with Proficient English (10 points instead of 20) and no NAATI CCL drops to 80 points — far short of the cut-off.

Timing: Working Against the 485 Expiry

The most acute pressure for 485 holders is the clock. A 485 granted with a 2-year validity leaves limited runway. Here is how to manage the timeline:

Year 1 of the 485: Secure the ACS assessment immediately. Do not wait. ACS takes 4–6 weeks and the Skill Level Met Date sets your points calculation. Sit the IELTS or PTE attempting Superior English early — you may need a second attempt. Submit your EOI as soon as you have the assessment result and English score, with all provable points locked in.

Year 2 of the 485: If you have not received an invitation, assess where you are in the queue. At this point you have 1 year of Australian work experience (adding 5 points), which may mean your score has increased. Consider whether NAATI CCL or a Professional Year start is viable given your remaining visa time.

If the 485 expires before you receive an invitation: An expired 485 with no bridging visa means you must leave Australia (or hold another substantive visa — a Skills in Demand 482 if your employer sponsors you). Your EOI can remain active from offshore — you are still eligible to receive an invitation while overseas. But you lose the ongoing accumulation of Australian work experience, and you cannot easily lodge the 60-day application window from offshore without planning.

Bridge to 482: If your employer is willing to sponsor you for a Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa, this provides a stable onshore platform to continue building Australian work experience while your EOI waits. After 2 years on a 482 in the same occupation, you are also eligible for the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) — a PR pathway independent of SkillSelect.

Points to Optimize Before EOI Submission

For most 485 holders, the sequence is:

1. Get ACS assessment result (determines your Skill Level Met Date and true experience points)
2. Determine your real points total using the ACS result
3. Decide whether to pursue Superior English first (if currently at Proficient) or submit immediately
4. Check NAATI CCL language eligibility — if you speak an eligible language, consider scheduling the test before your EOI submission
5. Check your Australian Study Requirement eligibility — this is effectively automatic documentation of your degree and enrollment records
6. Check Regional Study eligibility — if your campus was regional, this is 5 free additional points
7. Submit EOI at the highest provable score, with the Date of Effect locked in

Do not submit prematurely at a lower score planning to update later. Every update to your points resets your Date of Effect, moving you to the back of the queue at the new score.

The 491 Option: Regional Residency as a Bridge

If your score is not competitive for the 189 or 190 after optimizing all available points, the Subclass 491 with its 15-point nomination bonus may be the most realistic route. Western Australia has the largest allocation (2,200 places in 2025–26) and actively recruits skilled workers in trades, health, and engineering. For IT professionals willing to work in Perth's growing tech industry or regional WA, this can provide a clear path to permanent residency via the Subclass 191 after 3 years.

For 485 holders, the 491 regional living requirement is worth weighing carefully — but if the alternative is leaving Australia when the 485 expires, regional living for 3 years in exchange for PR is a reasonable trade-off.
